MiLB Mock Draft: Pick 15 Los Angeles Dodgers

In our first blow out in a while, Shooter Hunt goes to the Twins at 14.

Its no secret the Dodgers like high school pitchers, so the safe money would be on a pitcher at this point.  I think a potential 5-tool centerfielder like Hicks would be appealing, but I don't really see them going that direction.

Can I get some info on Casey Kelly? Thanks.

by npurcell on Apr 23, 2008 12:10 PM EDT reply actions

kelly

a big shortstop with a lot of power and the ability to stick at short. there are some questions if he will ever hit for average, but he has a lot of talent. he is the son of former big leaguer pat kelly.

Kelly

He’s also a good quarterback who has a football scholarship waiting for him at Tennessee. He could be a tough sign.

football

you would get about $1.5 million if you are the 15th pick. that’s a lot of money to turn down to go get the crap knocked out of you.

football

i just went and checked out his recruiting profile on rivals, and he is decked out in his baseball gear. he also didn’t commit until just before signing day, so it looks like he may have just been signing a football offer to try and get some more money out the team that takes him. tennessee also brought in a higher ranked quarterback last year, so if he does go that route he may be sitting the bench for 3 years or so.

Cole

Cole is leading right now and I really like Cole but if we are going for feasibility, the Dodgers are not going to pick Cole due to the Boras factor.

by npurcell on Apr 23, 2008 1:18 PM EDT reply actions

cole

i almost didn’t even put him on the list b/c of the boras factor. i can’t believe he has such a big lead.

Cole

In the real draft do you think Cole will fall to the Tigers? If he does, I can’t imagine them not picking him. They love power arms and won’t be scared off by his bonus demands.

cole

if he gets past the mets

A hitter

I’m not that well-versed on any of the draftees even at this level, but I’d be surprised if the Dodgers didn’t select a hitter after all of the pitchers they’ve drafted recently.

The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

by mckeeno on Apr 23, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

hitter

i wanted to put a hitter here too, but who are you going to take? its not like they are hurting for a first baseman, and i don’t think they would take dennis raben. hicks is really the only option as far as position players go unless they reach for someone like kelly or havens.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 23, 2008 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

i went Hicks...

...it’s about time for them to give up their pitcher run,..

by daveh33 on Apr 23, 2008 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

If you are looking for a bat

it doesn’t sound like Hicks is the guy. Lots of offensive issues, and he might be a better pitching prospect anyways.

Plus, the pitcher run seems to be working just fine. Its not like the Dodgers havn’t been able to find young bats in later rounds. If it aint broke, why fix it?

by nms on Apr 23, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

hicks

yeah, when you are talking about taking a hitter and the only question mark is the bat that throws up some flags for me.

Lobstein

Kyle Lobstein is almost the quintessential Logan White pitcher. He’s got the mechanics, projectability, polish and breaking ball that White looks for.

And there’s practically zero chance of the Dodgers taking a Boras client, especially one with questionable mechanics, command, secondary stuff, makeup issues, etc.

lobstein

he is the guy i have going to them in my mock, but i have martin rated higher so i voted for him here.

That makes sense, with Martin also reportedly having a good breaking ball along with the plus fastball. However, I haven’t seen him pitch so I’m trying to reserve judgement until then.

Hey fewgoodcards.....

I am sorry that I had a 1-2 punch of the flu and then having to be out of town for a funeral for 3 days. I am glad that you took the reins. I will start doing this again if you want me to

Relax, all right? Don't try to strike everybody out. Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 23, 2008 3:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I am surprised

Alex Meyer is getting no run whatsoever. I would see him being much more of a Logan White pick than Cole. After what the dodgers went through with Hochevar a few years back I can’t see them making the same mistake twice

scouting reports

I would really love to get some scouting reports on these prep players.

re: scouting reports

Ive scouted Ethan and Garrit. Talked to some people about Meyer.

You’ll all be surprised im picking Martin….lol

by AtlBr on Apr 24, 2008 1:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Whoa

You’ve seen Ethan Martin pitch or just hit? If you saw him pitch, I’m gonna need a lot of info on him. He could be my favorite for the Cardinals at 13 if Scheppers doesn’t fall.

re: whoa

Ive seen him pitch twice, including his coming out party at LaGrange. Ive seen him hit as well. It might be easier if i just message you than clogging space on the board….but i have no idea how to private message….lol

Martin

I’m sure there are plenty of people here who’d like to hear about Martin’s pitching.

Re: Martin

Ok Ill just copy and paste a scouting report i wrote on him. I had to cut some parts and delete some numerical notes from my laptop, but here is the jist of it.

“After seeing Ethan Martin throw multiple times in the last month, the opinion of the scouter is as follows:

Ethan Martin is a right-handed power pitcher who stands at about 6’2 and 200 lbs. He is a strong, muscular young man with a power pitchers body. While he is already muscular and well-built he projects to get a bit stronger in the next few years. Martin has a nice, clean delivery, and hides the ball fairly well for someone who was more of an offensive prospect prior to this year and his mechanics are cleaner than i expected.

On an off note. The kid looks EXACTLY like Eric Byrnes. Weird.

Martin throws what looks to be a 2-seam fastball that sits between 91and 94 mph. He touches up as high as 96, and has put away QUALITY hitters like Eric Hosner and Adrian Nietto on 96 MPH fastballs that dip and dive in and out of the strike zone. Ethan is clearly a bit raw, as his control is not always crisp from outing to outing, but still rates out as plus in terms of control. He throws a mid 80’s slider than can be describe as truly back-breaking. Both his fastball and slider project as potentially Plus-Plus pitches.

Martin throws an average changeup. After talking to his father, i have learned it is a split-fingered grip and that he treats his splitter as a change in the very low 80s with bottoming action. The pitch is inconsistent, but flashes (at times) plus potential. I would reccommend Martin ditching the split and movin towards a true change up, or simply adding it to his repetoire, as i dont expect his splitter will work in the future the way it does now. It is only low 80s because he slows the arm action down, similar to Palazzone’s changeup, and higher level hitters will pick this up. Still, the splitter has some use in the future in my mind at the moment.

I project Martin as a mid-to late first rounder at worst, but my personal opinion is Martin is the best prep pitcher in the nation, and i can see him possibly going as high as 6 to the Florida Marlins. Martin fits their M.O. as a non-Boras client and a top ceiling HS pitcher, though I think Eric Hosner will fall to 6 and the Marlins will not pass on him there, of which im certain.. With Melvilles struggle of command (13 BBs in 21 IP at the time of this writeup) i would recommend Martin ahead of Melville, Palazzone, and Cole.

Dollar Sign on the Muscle= $2.2 million “
