Zito's 2008

I realize this doesn't mean much, however, I present Barry Zito's combined 2008 MLB and Spring Training stats:

10 Starts (1-8 W-L), 44 IP, 57 Hits 37 Earned Runs, 25 BB, 14 SO, 7.57 ERA, 1.86 WHIP.

All that, AND an 83 mph fastball!  What a bargain for 19 million (I think, I can't remember exactly what his salary is, but I'm sure that's close).

The Giants would probably see a more positive effect on the team if he gave up the whole "Starting Pitcher" thing and threw BP, at least their offense would improve, and they'd actually get a shot to win on his days.  I'm not saying that he wasn't a good pitcher at some point during his career, but it looks like that at this point he's a grossly overpaid #5 starter.

I think

I think Barry Zito performed at about the level of a #3 starter last season and that he likely won’t perform below the level of a #4 guy this season.

That said, how can it be so obvious to anyone with the slightest sabermetric bent that Barry Zito was a horrible signing—and yet the Giants gambled $126 million on it?

It wouldn’t be so horrible if the Giants weren’t my favorite team.

Well...

At least the Sharks won…

In thinking about it a little more, Barry Zito IS the crazy crab.

it's funny

honestly.

How can everyone who follows baseball realize it was an atrocious deal? That there is no way he was going to be worth that amount of money? That he had obviously lost it in a major way?

Yet people in baseball seemingly didn’t? Why would any spend so much on him and commit to him for such a long time?

Matt Morris

Think about how much worse it could be for the Giants if it weren’t for the even more pathetic Pirates! Matt Morris is the worst starting pitcher in baseball (check the stats) and the Bucs swooped in a saved them from that absurd $10M +contract. Too bad for them, even the Pirates aren’t dumb enough to take Zito off their hands. .....I don’t think…..

They aren’t now that Littlefield is gone.

To be fair...

I don’t see what spring training stats have to do with anything. Adding them in to devalue his numbers is not really needed nor fair.

Nor

Nor … necessary! :)

Actually, Barry appears to be a decent third or at least fourth starter. But when you signed what at the time was the richest contract ever awarded a pitcher, that’s not nearly enough.

I’m sorry to say that I think owner Peter Magowan orchestrated the deal. If not, how could he have rehired Brain Sabean last summer? So essentially the Giants have a questionable GM and a questionable owner. Too bad too, since Brian loves baseball and Peter loves the Giants. But together they appear to have the foresight of a blind man walking backwards.

On second thought

On second thought, the poster added Barry’s spring training and regular season figures together and got a 7.57 ERA. Given that Barry’s ERA is now 7.53 on the season, perhaps I should have given the poster far more credit.

So, great Anzantor, what are your latest predictions for the housing problems? :) Inquiring minds need to know.
