MiLB Mock Draft: Pick 14 Minnesota

Well it was still very close, but the thread is now buried and no one is voting so i think it is that time again.  Buster Posey edges out Shooter Hunt in a close vote.

The Twins are a tough team to predict as who would have thought Ben Revere was going to be a first round pick?  I tried to give a wide variety, but there are still other guys i could list and didn't.  I think there is a chance for a lot of other votes here, and please feel free to do so.  Just make sure you list it in the comments section.

I feel bad b/c Terry Ryan Jr is the one who started all this, and I feel like I am stealing his team so if you are out there TRJ just say something and we can get this poll switched up with names you want to see.

I've been Waiting for this one

And now I have no idea who to take ideally it’d be a Polished College MI or third baseman But that isn’t really there.

polished college 3rd baseman

i thought about putting connor gillaspie on here, but i think they should have a pretty good shot at him at 27 and he is a reach at this point.

Other

Gerritt Cole. #1 ranked HS prospect by Perfect Game. Is the type who might just go to school if he falls this far, but it’s a high-risk high-reward type pick, and the Twins seem to be going in that direction lately…

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Given the choices

the Twins would pick Christian Friedrich, I think. They love LHP’s. Their new park will still favor LHP’s.

I would like to hear the Twins discussion of Hunt’s command and control. They would be disgusted by his BB rates and have the arrogance to think they can fix them.

I was realy hoping to get a college guy here and/or a position player. I passed on Friedrich and Hunt because of their control issues.

I picked Ethan Martin because of his ceiling. Does anyone know if he prefers SP, 3B, or QB? Given the football buyout, would he cost more than slot?

Alex Meyer might not be a bad cheaper alternative.

Thanx for getting this done, FGC.

I picked Shooter

Because I like his name and we are beyond the number of guys that I have much knowledge of.

Can’t help but think of Shooter from Happy Gilmore. With a name like that, he’s gotta be good…

Shooter...

...is the nickname of a popular sports columnist in St. Paul, a.k.a. Charlie Walters, who had a brief but memorable career in the bullpen for Billy Martin’s Twins. He threw in the high 90s, but he never threw anything but a fastball. So once hitters figured him out, he was done. I’m sure he’d be pulling for the Twins to draft Shooter II.

popular?

I suppose it is relative. If by popular you mean ridiculously bad than I’d agree with that usage of the term popular.

High Schooler

I think the Twins will go with a high school player. They usually do.
I think Alex Meyer or Brett DeVall could be a good fit for the Twins.

high schooler

i’m also thinking high schooler. alex meyer has been my guy for them most of the spring, but i am starting to think it may be ethan martin.

High Schooler

Yea…Twins seem a good bet to go High School here. Im going Ethan Martin. First of all, because as you know, im completely convinced hes emergede as the top prep SP in the draft.

I dont like Alex Meyer. I didnt get into this in the last post but i guess now is as good a time as any, so here we go:

Alex Meyer throws in the low 90s, a year after he was in the low 80’s. I dont trust a prep who suddenly jumps from 83/84 to 91. Its nothing against hte kid… but theres something ot be said about a young kid who is used to pitching at 83,84 mph and suddenly is at 91. Suddenly there are changes on the stress in his shoulder, the stress created by mechanics on his elbow is now doubled, etc. Ive seen so many preps fall victim to not be able to maintain their new found velocity.

High School here, you gotta go Ethan Martin. I see the vote is leaning towards Shooter Hunt, but given these are the twins….thats NOT gonna happen lol. Also, for the guy who asked: Ethan is a pitcher. He prefer s to pitch, football is not an option at hte next level, and he knows he will be a pitcher. I was able to talk to his mother and father at a game a few weeks ago so i dont think any of those issues affect signability.

ethan martin

you talk about alex meyer suddenly finding velocity, couldn’t you say the same thing about martin? i don’t know that much about him, but he was either A) not pitching last year or B) not showing nearly this kind of stuff. either way he is also experiencing a lot greater stress on his arm.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 23, 2008 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions

findin velo

Martin had hit 93 as early as his sophomore year of high school. always had a plus plus arm but mainly as a 3b with occassional pitching. This is the first year he’d committed to pitching full time.

There is something to what you said about more stress with his increased workload, and maybe people like Mevlille, Cole, Palazzone go ahead of him because of this, but id take my chances on a kid doing more than he’s used to with the same stuff hes had than a kid doing more than hes used to with different stuff. Ethans mechanics are pretty clean, which makes you feel a little better, and Meyer is still a little bit lanky and awkward at times on the mound in terms of mechanics.

Twins picking its probably Martin or Cole here. Id be shocked if Bill Smith in his first draft went college and departed from the usual M.O. they had down pat for so long

by AtlBr on Apr 23, 2008 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

what usual M.O

Last year was the first year in quite some time the Twins did not select a college pitcher in the first round or two. Less than two years ago the Twins picked up a certain power armed college RHP… Matt Garza.

From 02-05 they took EIGHT college pitchers (Garza, Kevin Slowey, Ryan Mullins, Jesse Crain, Matt Fox, Scott Baker, Glen Perkins, Brian Duensing) in the first 105 picks and about half of those guys they took with a first round pick.
Generally speaking people overstatethe difference between college and HS. Its generally about just getting talent.
