What are my Giants thinking?!?
So this is a question that I could've asked multiple times already in the past year, but they just DFA'd Rajai Davis to make room for......another middler infielder that couldn't handle A ball last year. Manny Burris
About the only thing making sense is sticking Bowker at first because well, they have no one else that can hit there, and he might be able to. Saw Fred Lewis make a throw the other day and it didn't look half bad. I'd heard he had a pea-shooter, so I guess I was pleasantly surprised. How is he looking out in left?
My first Diary -errrr Fanpost and yes I am complaining, but it was a really slow page load

the giants
my opinion, the most poorly run and hopeless franchise in baseball. Sabean is a total moron. Villalona, Alderson, Cain, Lincecum, Sanchez… and not much else. Nothing to look forward to. Their ‘new-ish’ ball park isn’t going to fill sits much longer. To answer the original question, the giants aren’t thinking much of anything.

Baltimore
is worse, at least IMO. They finally decided to rebuild, but Angelos will meddle with front office operations until the day he dies. And to boot, they still have the least amount of organizational talent within their division. Cap it off with them competing against the two biggest juggernauts in baseball and baseball’s biggest soon-to-be juggernaut, and things aren’t looking so hot for the next decade.
At least if the Giants brass decides to pull its head out of its ass, it only takes a couple seasons to get back to contender status if all the cards fall right.

The real question
is what the Giants were doing over the past 3-4 years. Sabean’s failure to engage in long-term planning has finally caught up with the team.

Part of It
My real beef with the organization has been the lack of trust the organization has shown in young position players. I realize that they haven’t had many (if any) blue chip prospects, but some of the guys that they mishandled could have ended up at or near replacement level, and on the cheap side. For so long they’ve been too afraid to let the kids go out and fail or succeed, and all of the sudden this year they’ve just let it fly.
Lewis finally got a real chance, and he’s making the most of it. Makes me think about poor Todd Linden, who’s back in the PCL, and probably could have hit 20-25 HR, with a low batting average and many strikeouts. Cheaper than Randy Winn…
Feliz had to wait a couple years for his chance, as did Aurilia in the late 90’s. Frandsen would have been blocked by Durham had he not gotten hurt. The best thing that can happen for this years Giants are guys like Winn, Durham and Molina over performing and getting traded away for some position prospects. However, I’m sure Sabean will find a young SP that looks too tempting, and opt for that instead.
If anyone read what Baseball-Prospectus had to say in their intro essay on the Giants, things will get much worse before they get better. At the very least, the rats will jump ship, and us real fans can get better seats to see Lincecum and Cain take a loss when they go 7, strikeout 10 and give up 2 runs for the next few years before they bolt for a team with an offense.
Tim Lincecum is Baseball's Chuck Norris

Todd Linden
Todd Linden strikes out too much to hit for any kind of average. He had that one great season at Fresno - based in great part on an unsustainable BABIP - and I thought he would come around with enough time, but once I did a BABIP analysis, I realized he wasn’t likely to cut it.
I think much of what “Babe” Bowker has accomplished is a mirage, and I’m also expecting Freddie Lewis to come back down to earth (also strikes out way too much), but I think Nate Schierholtz is a capable major league hitter who could become a good one if he can achieve the goal he set out for himself six months ago—to develop the patience to wait for more pitches he can drive. That would seemingly improve both his power (which is so-so) and his ability to draw a walk (which is very poor). I believe Nate is already capable of hitting for average in the majors.

Wow
I think it is obvious that I was kidding. If you can’t laugh about how bad the Giants are, what can you laugh at?

Great question!
But a fan is a fan—almost no matter what! Oh, and then there is Tim Lincecum. :)

Also
I actually made the trip to SF a few years ago to check out the ballpark and Bonds. That park blew my mind and I would put it right up there with Wrigley for the great atmosphere and location.
