Mets Sign German Catcher Kai Gronauer

From Mets Prospectus

The Mets have signed 21–year-old German Catcher Kai Gronauer to a two-year minor league contract. Just by taking a look at his stats, you can tell the kid is quite the athlete. While playing for Germany in multiple tournaments and things of that sort he has excelled in every category. Now obviously, I can't tell you what the competition was like, because I simply don't know. But, as I look through his stats, he really reminds me of Dodger catcher Russel Martin.

To go along with his hitting abilities (who knows if that will transfer over) Gronauer showed a rare ability from catchers, the ability to steal bases. Also, while playing for Germany, Kai showed great defensive skills behind the plate, as he leaves Germany with the highest fielding percentage of any player in the history of their National team at .992. Not to mention the absolute cannon for an arm he has, gunning down nearly 50% of runners who attempted to steal off of him.

~What do you guys think about this kid? I heard he was one of the best (if not the best) player from Germany. Also heard he had an offer from the Pirates, but declined them and signed with the Mets.

As a Mets Fan

It sounds like a low risk, possible HIGH reward signing. Sure the German league is not great competition, but he was the best player in the league. Maybe he’ll become a plus defensive catcher with above average offense. I can hope!

Thoughts

I assume the Mets think he has major league potential, as they bothered to sign him, but trying to glean anything from German stats strikes me as a fool’s errand, especially when on extrapolates from those stats to make a comparison to one of the best catchers in the game.

hmm

I would think the site was comparing the abilities of the kid being a catcher and being able to steal bases to Russel Martin.

Agreed.

If you can’t pull anything out of high school, VWL or DWL, you certainly can’t pull anything out of a German league. If you’re going to evaluate this guy, it’s with scouting—bar none. On top of that, unless he was smart and knowledgeable enough to develop his own talent, signing a 21-year-old with no MiL or NCAA experience doesn’t scream Grade-B prospect.
