Are they serious?

Watchin baseball tonight, the Blue Jays and Tigers highlight rolls, the panel includes Eduardo Perez, new addition Chris Singleton,Tim Kurkjian, Steve Berthiaume.

Berthiaume mentions that highly touted 1st round pick David Purcey is getting the start and throws out the quick question Anyone know anything about him? ..........after about 5 seconds Tim Kurkjian just sheepishly says "No".

I just want to know if I am the only one who thinks that its absolutly ridiculous that ESPN doesn't have a person on a show called 'Baseball Tonight' actually know a little bit about the stuff they cover?

experts

i am continually surprised by how little these supposed experts actually know. baseball is their job and they get paid to cover it yet they know less than most of us who just follow it as a hobby.

The worst part

is that Berthiaume would ask that question. Don’t they have production meetings? Don’t they go over what they’re going to talk about on air? You’d think if nobody knew much about a player, they wouldn’t get to a point on the air where they’re all caught with their pants down.

Is Purcey even THAT highly touted anymore?

He’s always had good stuff and he finally stopped walking so many batters last season, but he still has zero command in the zone. Now, he either can’t get by with stuff alone and/or doesn’t know how to throw what the hitter isn’t expecting. With the lack of command, this is a serious concern if combined with the former. And in his age 26 season, he’s not exactly a young’un anymore.

Reality check

I’m a newspaper reporter. I have met Kurkjian. He is a pro’s pro, believe me.

It’s almost impossible for these guys to keep up with prospects when they have so much going on at the major-league level. Peter Gammons used to try to flex when it came to prospects, but he ended up writing about “the unsung Corwin Malone” (he was unsung for a reason) and “the Padres’ Jack Peavey.”

I’d rather someone say they don’t know than just throw out b.s.

I know … we think “experts” should know everything about baseball at every level. They don’t. They won’t.

p.s.: I think Singleton is going to be a star on that show.
