MiLB Mock Draft: Pick 8 Chicago (AL)
I would have gone Melville, but he lost by the narrowest of margins, 2 votes in the original and 1 in the runoff. Both options were good picks so, why not? Now comes Kenny Williams and his perchance for taking high-floor, low-ceiling players of late. I am going to add an option that might get everyone a little up in arms because it is on its face value ridiculous, but has been mentioned in more than a few reliable places. I am going to add Jordan Danks, not because he deserves to be here, but because the ChiSox are supposedly very infatuated with him. I will group him with a lot of college players.
Another thing....am I overvaluing Gerrit Cole? Some places (BA) rate his fastball as the singular best pitch in this draft, while others (this board) deride his mechanics as an accident waiting to happen. I'd like a little more insight.

cole
i don't think you are overvaluing him, he has legit dominating stuff. baseball america has dropped him down to 19th in the rankings though, and boras definitely clouds his status.
Cole
He should definitely be an option at this point. For every pitcher, there is going to be someone out there that hates his mechanics and thinks he's an injury waiting to happen. However, no one can deny the stuff the Cole brings to the bump.
For this one, I'm going with Skipworth.
votes
this one is going to be interesting. people are all over the place so far.
skipworth
my cousin just told me he went 18-18 to break the california record for most consecutive hits. says skipworth throws the ball back to the pitcher faster than it comes in.
Hosmer
Seems like the best of the guys who are left, and the Cubs are one of the few teams who might actually pony up for his asking price.
Vogt early, Vogt often.
Response
Considering that the White Sox hate dealing with Boras and that Kenny Williams has all but said flat-out that the team just isn't interested in drafting prospects represented by him, guys like Cole and Hosmer aren't even on the radar screen for them at No. 8.
The White Sox love the Danks boys, and they drafted Jordan out of HS. Apparently they made a very substantial offer but were ultimately turned down. The team loves athletic outfielders and hard throwing pitchers, so it's not like Danks would be a disastrous selection based on draft philosophy and raw talent.
However, I'm going to call other here and go with Aaron Hicks, whose profile and talent makes him an exceedingly obvious match for the White Sox.
melville starting to stretch it out
when you combine this with his showing in the last round i think it is about time to call this one. personally i would have taken skipworth, but that may just be b/c i saw melville get smacked around for 7 earned runs on saturday, i think he could be slipping.

Overvaluing Gerrit Cole?
Well, consider the sources you are debating
BA calling his FB the best pitch in the draft, Perfect Game calling him the top prep and one of their analysts calling him every bit as good as any prep pitching phenom the last several years vs. some random non-pitching coaches on a board saying the know more about mechanics..
Best prep fastball?
BA has already said Crow's fastball is the best in the draft and his slider is the best breaking pitch. Did they say Cole's fastball was the best in the HS ranks?
Huh?
I know what prep means.
nms said BA called Cole's fastball the best in the draft. I questioned this because BA has previously said Crow has the best FB in the draft. So, I asked if he meant BA said Cole had the best prep fastball.
my bad
read it wrong. i thought nms said best prep fastball, but he said best fastball and best prep player.

I was going off
the diary writer’s statement that Cole had the best pitch, according to BA, in draft.. maybe it is best prep pitch.
At any rate, my point remains the same..
