I'm sure IndiansFan will bring this guy up, but Jeanmar Gomez has a very nice debut today. 5ip 6h 0er 0bb 9k
As one of the youngest kids in High A this year, those kind of numbers will make him well known in the near future if he keeps progressing well.
Hello hybrid,
Your "bad" wasn't as bad as "The Wizard" making the Sprint telephone guy disappear in that Alltel 5-10-20 plan commercial. :-)
As far as I know, you can't directly edit your posts - you just have to "edit" it in your next post like you did!
Thanks for mentioning Gomez - I was very impressed by his line tonight, as I was by De La Cruz's line last night. The Indians have some intriguing young pitching prospects (with either power or projectable power arms) at Low-A and High-A with the four I mentioned, along with other notable young pitchers like 19-YO LHP Ryan Morris and 20-YO RHP Mike Pontius at Low-A.
Take care and have a great day!

thanks for the update!

Indians' Overview!
Hello everyone,
Hello everyone,
Indians (MLB) - off on Thursday; will open up a 3-game series with Oakland on Friday at Progressive Field. Friday's game is at 7:05 P.M. between RHP Joe Blanton and LHP C.C. Sabathia.
In case you missed it, RHP Fausto Carmona was signed through the 2011 season, with 3 club options, essentially locking him up through the 2014 season. The contract is worth $15 million over the 4 years, but the 3 club options could boost the total value to $43 million, plus another $5 million possible from escalators in the contract. You can read more about that here.
AAA Buffalo - lost to Richmond (ATL) 2-1 - 70 degrees, partly cloudy, 1 MPH variable wind.
2B Josh Barfield - 1-4, 1 K (.344)
RF Jason Cooper - 1-3, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 BB (.214 - still amazes me that he is still in the system after being a 3rd-Rd. (82nd overall) pick in 2002, but provides additional depth, even though he has really stagnated since his solid season at Low-A Lake County and High-A Kinston in 2003.)
LF Ben Francisco - 0-3, 1 BB (.154 - off to a slow start, just like his LF counterparts in Cleveland, Michaels and Dellucci.)
1B Jordan Brown - 0-3, 1 BB (.290 - cooling off a bit after a very hot start.)
DH Ryan Mulhern - 1-2, 2 BB (.261 - nice to see the 2 BB/0 K line, as plate discipline is arguably his biggest weakness.)
CF Brad Snyder - 0-4, 1 K (.250 - plate discipline has been relatively solid to this point, which is a good sign, being that plate discipline is also his biggest weakness.)
RHP Sean Smith - 6.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 5 K, 1 HB, 1 PO (1B); 51 S/23 B, 4 G/7 F (2.00 - much better outing the second time around for a somewhat overlooked pitching prospect who provides additional depth in case the Indians need reinforcement in the rotation in the event that Lee or even Byrd struggles for any extended period of time, along with Laffey, Sowers, Slocum, and Miller.)
Richmond:
SS Brent Lillibridge - 1-4, 1 R, 2 K (.138)
AA Akron - lost to Bowie (BAL) 7-5; 61 degrees, cloudy, 8 MPH from right to left.
CF Jose Constanza - 0-5, 1 R, 2 K (.034 - off to a very slow start in his first exposure to AA.)
SS Josh Rodriguez - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 2 E (3-throw, missed catch) (.115 - also off to a very slow start in his first exposure to AA, though his 2 hits have gotten him over the .100 mark.)
1B Matt Whitney - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 BB (.345 - conversely, he is doing quite well in his first exposure at AA.)
DH Michael Aubrey - 2-5, 1 R, 1 2B, 1 3B, 2 RBI (.300 - the key for him is to stay healthy.)
3B Wes Hodges - 1-5, 1 RBI, 1 K (.333)
RF Stephen Head - 1-3, 1 BB, 1 GIDP (.333 - first appearance of 2007; I'm guessing he'll probably play exclusively in RF, being that both Whitney and Aubrey are splitting time between 1B and DH.)
C Chris Gimenez - 0-1, 3 BB, 1 K (.286)
LHP David Huff - L (0-1) - 4.2 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 1 HR (solo); 8 G/1 F (7.27 - H and R/ER not great, but the other marks are solid to very good, particularly the BB/K ratios and the G/F ratios.)
Bowie:
RF Nolan Reimold - 1-2, 1 R, 1 HR, 3 RBI, 2 SF (.172 - solo shot off Huff.)
High-A Kinston - tied with Frederick (BAL) 4-4 going into the top of the 16th inning as of the time of this posting; 72 degrees, clear, 7 MPH wind out to CF:
RF John Drennen - 1-7, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.235)
1B Beau Mills - 1-6, 1 R, 1 BB, 3 K (.385)
3B Jared Goedert - 1-5, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (1-missed catch) (.267)
DH Nick Weglarz - 1-6, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K (.200 - BA is a bit low, but has a 6 BB/1 K ratio, leading to a 1.200 OPS (.700 OBP/.500 SLG before tonight's game!))
SS Carlos Rivero - 2-6, 1 RBI, 2 K, 1 S (.438 - doing very well in his first exposure to High-A to this point.)
PH-LF Todd Martin - 0-1, 1 BB, 1 K (.111)
PH-CF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 1-4, 1 K (.167)
RHP Jeanmar Gomez - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K; 3 G/2 F (1.80 - as hybrid mentioned, outstanding first High-A outing for the 19-YO, 6'3" 168 lb. Venezuelan who was 11-7, giving up 152 H in 140.2 IP, along with 46 BB/94 K at Low-A Lake County last season. He, along with RHP Hector Rondon and RHP Paolo Espino, form a very nice Latin triumvirate with high potential at High-A Kinston.)
RHP Luis Perdomo - 2.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K; 2 G/2 F (0.00 - the soon to be 24-YO with a solid first outing in High-A and has a good arm, reaching the mid-90s with his fastball, and struck out over 11/9 IP at Low-A in 2007.)
RHP Neil Wagner - 1.1 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 2 K; 1 G/1 F; 1/1 IR scored (5.40 - struggling with location, but reportedly and arguably has the 2nd-most explosive fastball in the system only to Adam Miller's.)
LHP Heath Taylor - 4.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K; 6 G/4 F (0.00 - very impressive outing for the 21-YO, 10th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Oklahoma.)
Frederick:
PH Matt Wieters - 1-1 (.538 - great professional start for the 21-YO, 1st-Rd. 2007 pick; his OPS coming into tonight's game was 1.694!)
Low-A Lake County - defeated Delmarva (BAL - again! :-) 5-0; 47 degrees, overcast, 15 MPH wind coming in from CF:
LF Luis Montero - 1-3, 2 R, 1 2B, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 SB (3-2B) (.421)
SS Mark Thompson - 0-3, 1 RBI, 1 SF (.077 - off to a very slow start.)
2B Karexon Sanchez - 1-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 SF, 1 E (3-fielding) (.300)
1B Chris Nash - 0-4, 4 K (.214 - plate discipline becoming an early concern for the RHH, 21-YO, 24th-Rd., 6'4" 230 lb. 2006 pick out of Marquette HS in Chesterfield, MO, as he has struck out 14 times in 28 ABs, with just 2 BBs.)
DH Adam White - 1-2, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 SB (1-2B) (.261)
LHP Ryan Morris - W (1-0) - 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 4 K; 7 G/4 F (2.45 - very solid outing for the 19-YO, 6'3" 175 lb. 4th-Rd. 2007 pick.)
RHP Mike Pontius - H (1) - 2.2 IP, 1 H, 2 BB, 3 K, 1 WP; 4 G/1 F; 0/2 IR scored (0.00 - has a power arm; so far in 6.2 IP - 4 H/2 BB/9 K and a 10.00 GO/AO.)
A note from the game between Low-A Lake County and Delmarva on Wednesday, April 9, 2008:
20-YO LHP Kelvin De La Cruz (for Low-A Lake County against Delmarva - BAL): 5.0 IP/3 H/1 ER/1 BB/8 K, bringing his total through two starts: 10.0 IP/8 H/1 R/1 ER/3 BB/14 K, 1.67 GO/AO, .200 BAA. Another good Latin starting pitching prospect in the Indians' system to keep an eye on, along with the trio of Gomez, Rondon, Espino at High-A mentioned above.
Take care and have a great day!

Goedert
do you see a mid-season bump to AA if he is doing well? I saw him in Kinston last year and thought he was somebody to keep an eye on
The Giants need to sign Harry Doyle.
Hello jrose643,
Yes, I definitely could see him reaching AA Akron by midseason if he is performing well at High-A Kinston.
While his 2007 overall numbers at High-A Kinston don't look that good on the surface - .256/.369/.424 - keep in mind that Goedert battled a shoulder injury not long after he was promoted to HIgh-A Kinston, keeping him out of action for around a month or so, then it took him until August to get into a good groove, but finished 2007 strong - I don't remember his exact August numbers off the top of my head, but I know he hit over .300 (around .320 or so) and I think his SLG percentage for that month was approaching .900 if I remember correctly, so he was starting to perform more on par, with the promotion taken into account, like he did at Low-A Lake County where he virtually destroyed the South Atlantic League.
That's one reason why I think he's a good one to keep an eye on. Another reason is to see whether he can stick at 2B or not; so far in 2008, he is alternating between 3B (his original position) and 2B (the position the Indians would like to see him stick at.) If he can stick at 2B, that would certainly raise his value that much more.
In addition, outside of Josh Rodriguez (who is off to a slow start at AA Akron and is actually playing SS, though many think he'll play 2B long-term,) there really isn't much direct competition between the Majors and Goedert for playing 2B long-term. Barfield is at AAA, but there is some question about whether he is the long-term answer, and many are thinking that Asdrubal Cabrera will be the Indians' long-term SS at some point down the road (with either Peralta shifting to 3B or the OF, or being trade bait sometime in the future.) Conversely, besides Beau Mills at High-A Kinston, Wes Hodges is at AA Akron (and unlike Rodriguez, is off to a very solid start there,) and there's still Marte in the mix at the ML level (though I suspect his chances of being with the Indians long-term are probably less than Barfield's, even though Marte is in the Majors right now and Barfield isn't.)
Looking through Goedert's 2007 2B fielding statistics at Kinston at the Baseball-Reference's Minor League site, they were the following:
31 G/54 PO/94 A/3 E/14 DP, .980 FP, RFg = 4.77 - overall, he seems pretty solid over there, though he still needs more repetitions there to make sure he can handle the position long-term.
Definitely, though, Goedert is certainly one to watch and could very well be in AA Akron by the second half with a solid to strong performance at High-A Kinston in the first half.
Hopefully, this is helpful! :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Update on Kinston - they win in 16 innings!
Hello everyone,
High-A Kinston - defeated Frederick (BAL) in 16 innings 6-5 as Kinston countered Frederick's 1 in the top half with 2 in the bottom half; 72 degrees, clear, 7 MPH wind out to CF:
RF John Drennen - 1-7, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 HBP (.235)
1B Beau Mills - 2-7, 2 R, 1 BB, 3 K (.429)
3B Jared Goedert - 2-6 2 R, 1 BB, 2 K, 1 HBP, 1 E (1-missed catch) (.313)
DH Nick Weglarz - 1-6, 1 RBI, 2 BB, 2 K (.200 - BA is a bit low, but has a 8 BB/3 K ratio in 10 ABs, leading to a .856 OPS (thanks to a .556 OBP!)
SS Carlos Rivero - 3-7, 2 RBI, 2 K, 1 S, 1 E (3-throw - gave Frederick a brief 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the 16th.) (.471 - doing very well in his first exposure to High-A to this point, and atoned for his throwing error by knocking in the winning run in the bottom of the 16th.)
PH-LF Todd Martin - 0-1, 1 BB, 1 K (.111 - threw out Brandon Snyder at HP in the 16th to preserve the 4-4 tie before Rivero's error gave Frederick a brief 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the 16th.)
PH-CF Cirilo Cumberbatch - 1-4, 1 K (.167)
RHP Jeanmar Gomez - 5.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K; 3 G/2 F (1.80 - as hybrid mentioned, outstanding first High-A outing for the 19-YO, 6'3" 168 lb. LHP Heath Taylor - 4.2 IP, 1 H, 3 K; 6 G/4 F (0.00 - very impressive outing for the 21-YO, 10th-Rd. 2007 pick out of Oklahoma.)

De La Cruz may actually be 19-YO until 10/2/08!
Hello everyone,
It has come to my attention from some of the LGT posters (Jay in particular,) that De La Cruz's "official" birthdate (and listed on some sites) as being 10/2/08, whereas some sites like The Baseball Cube lists it as 2/10/08 - if that is the case, De La Cruz is actually 19-YO and won't turn 20-YO until after the season.
Sorry for the confusion - I just learned that myself. :-)
Take care and have a great day!

Brian Rike
72nd pick by Rockies last year from Lousiana Tech and a guy featured by Carlos Gomez homeres in his 3rd straight game for Asheville in the Sally League... 4th overall. Kid had a nice debut in the NW league last year as well. Good looking athlete as well
I like Rike!
I think Rockies fans should make old school political buttons with that slogan. Anyway, all three of these homers have been away from McCormick Field, which makes them more impressive. He's got a nice swing, and some of the best plate discipline in the system as well as a plus outfield arm (2 assists already this season). I think he's going to draw a lot more attention this year.
Thats funny!
Good idea :-) I saw a video analysis of his swing last year and I thought he looked real good and sure enough he's been real good as a pro. Its cool you follow the Rox so closely. Keep it up. They have turned into a very good organization. Lots of young, exciting talents.
well
It's nice to have a girl in the mix. Casejud seems to agree with his goofy smiley face and oh so inconspicuous kindness that he'd never show me if my name was Rox Boy.
Who am I kidding, Rox Girl, you got a man? =D

Others
UW Husky and Red Sox 2007 draftee Nick Hegadone dominated in his start for Greenville 5-2-0-0-7
Reds 7th rounder last year Brandon Waring has now scored 73 and drove in 70 in his first 77 professional games with his hot start in Dayton and his amaing season in the Pioneer league last year. He and Frazier are a nice 1-2 punch for Dayton.
Not the greatest of competition, though
Don't get me wrong, I like Brett Anderson a lot -and he's the main reason I think Arizona may eventually come to regret the Danny Haren trade, but that Modesto lineup is really starting to discourage me. With Hector Gomez still out (he should be returning tonight) and Daniel Mayora showing signs that his bat last season was purely a McCormick Field mirage, only Michael McKenry seems like a legit MLB prospect right now, and he probably would be iffy at best if he didn't play catcher (plays it damn well, too, two more CS's last night). Anyway, I have a feeling the Nuts are going to pad a lot of pitchers K totals this year. Simon Ferrer's a knuckleball pitcher, btw, and if the pitch isn't working for him, I could probably hit HR's off it (okay, so that's a lie, I could probably hit something that might reach the outfield grass off it... if the wind was blowing out) so the 2HR's off him need to be taken with a little skepticism.
Hector Gomez
Have you seen much of him? I never know quite where to rank him as a player. He sounds like a pretty good future Big-League SS from what I hear... though prob not with the Rockies... but Id like to see him swing the bat and field in person. I wonder if there is any chance he switches to 2b as he gets closer to the Majors? Not that he needs to because of his skills but obviously nobody is moving Tulo off Short and it would give them 2 SS's up the middle.
I know the Rockies aren't going to make him switch positions
Until they absolutely have to, similarly to what they're doing with Chris Nelson right now. Nelson will go to second it looks like, so even that position seems blocked. I think the way they're setting it up, the idea seems to be to trade Garrett Atkins this winter, give Ian Stewart a chance to win the third base job outright, and if he flops move Gomez to third. Otherwise they'll stash him away for a season or two more in the minors until we lose Holliday or Hawpe and move him to the outfield to replace them. Gomez' bat is supposedly going to mature to be corner outfield worthy, he's got a long frame that should fill out well. He covers a lot of ground at short, and has a quick jump defensively and moves better to his left than Tulo ever has, but not quite as well to the third base side. I've seen him make plays ranging from straight up shortstop to the second base side of the outfield grass with alarming ease, although I've seen him miss a couple of those where he tries to hard to do the impossible and winds up throwing the ball away. I think he could convert easily to a rangy rightfielder, which would be a tremendous boon at Coors.
Dana Eveland is already making Oakland look smart...
He is having a heck of a start. He put up some awesome minor league numbers and has finally figured out how to get major league batters out.
Doolittle's homers came late
He hit the homers in the 7th and 8th innings, long after Ferrer had been taken out. First one of Zach Simons and second off James Burok I think. Now I don't know anything about either of these pitchers so I don't know if that makes it more impressive or less impressive but thought I should mention it for the sake of accuracy.
Will Inman
So far this season...
2-0, 0.00 ERA, 10 IP's, 4 Hits, 5 Walks, 9 K's
Those are great number but
That just goes to show you how unpredictable the game of baseball is, look at Inman's numbers and look at these numbers from Tommy Hanson who doesn't have a win yet 0.00 ERA, 11 IP, 1 H, 3 BB, 20 K.
