Miami 1st Rounders

I will be attending the Miami v. GA Tech series this weekend and report on my blog: http://21nunder.blogspot.com/

The obvious guys who I will be video taping and looking at are the 3 potential 1st rounders for Miami - Alonso, Raben, and Weeks

My question is, does anyone want me to tape and report on any of the other players for GT or Miami?

If so, please leave their names and possible positions.

Weeks

is by far my favorite of those three. I think his bat is as good as Raben's (overrated!) and not far from Alonso's but I've seen him simply take over a game in every way possible. An electric player when he is on.

Other guys....
GT RHP Zach von Tersch, the Sat starter, has really come on this year. He came to Tech as a raw, but well regarded, kid from Iowa whose strength was athleticism, projectablilty and a live arm. He really struggled this year but filled out over the offseason and improved his whole arsenal and his control and he has been lights out. He could be a good pick next year

A couple more notes to follow here..

Dietrich (freshman SS/RHP)

is by far the best prospect on the Tech team. Coming out of Cleveland sports powerhouse St Ignatius HS he was one of the highest drafted guys from last years draft to make it to college. He is a big guy (a 3b in the pros) with solid athleticism and very good power. His arm is strong enough that some scouts in HS thought his future looked better as a pitcher. If he keeps it up he will be a 2010 first rounder.

LHP Dave Duncan, Fri starter, has been on the map forever it seems like. He was a well regarded guy out of HS in Ohio (Tech Coach Danny Hall has a longstanding Ohio connection) and was drafted both out of HS and as a draft-elig Soph but turned down 6-figures both times. He is a huge (6-8, 200) LHP with good velo and a curve, splitter and change. His secondary pitches are very inconsistent. Sometimes very good, sometimes pretty weak and telegraphed. His walk numbers for his career are actually pretty good but I have definitely seen him really struggle with command against good teams before. This, along with the on and off-ness of his other pitches, might be a side effect of trying to coordinate the mechanics of that huge frame.

Tech So IF Patrick Long I was actually really impressed with last year when he stepped right in as a freshman and was a key bat in the lineup. He is a guy with a fire hydrant build, decent athleticism, good power and a good arm. This year, however, he has collapsed at the plate in a Kyle Russell-esque way and has lost his starting job to freshman Thomas Nichols.

Tech So OF Curtis Dupart, who isn't playing much, is a sleeper. He is really raw but a super athlete and can, at times, put it all together and be a world beater of a player. So far, those times have been rare in his career. Nice upside down the road though. Could be a guy that breaks out as an upperclassman.

Techs Sat starter, Jr Eddie Burns is like Duncan in the fact that he is huge(6-8 220) and turned down good money as a draft-elig So last year. I like him a little more than Duncan, he has a good sinking fast ball and good control. He has bounced back from injuries that nearly derailed his career a couple years ago.

Tech's backup C, Cole Leonida, is a strong recruit that could get drafted in the first handful of rounds in 2010. Their current starter, Jason Haniger, is a solid all-around player who waited two years to really play much. Hes a big guy with decent looking athleticism and a decent stick.

They have an OF, Charlie Blackmon, who was drafted out of JUCO as a pitcher but after missing most of last year has reemerged, Jeff Kindel-style, as an OF. I don't know how promising his future there is but he has been playing well so far.

LF/1b Luke Murton has big league genetics, but isn't really that similar to his brother. His brother was a very fundamentally sound OF who made good contact, plate disipline and some power and ran well. Luke is a bigger, slower, more powerful guy. He has been well regarded since HS, and was drafted last year as a Soph despite hitting .235 or something. Hes got power but has been easy as hell to strike out every time i've seen him. Apparently he has improved this year and is actually leading Tech in BA right now and striking out less

Tech also has some random pen arms with watching, no one great but a couple decent arms

as for Miami

soph SS Ryan Jackson is a decent prospect. Scouts liked his defensive actions out of HS. His bat speed looked pretty average to me, and he lacked pop or strong-looking swing and didn't hit much hard when I saw him (granted, I don't call myself an expert) but he does have the second best batting average on a VERY offensive team.

Soph 3b Mark Sobolewski is draft-elig this year and has some big time pop in the bat and is a solid athlete who can play 3b at the next level. He seems like a very talented and fundamentally sound all-around hitter to me. He turned down 6-figures out of HS

Jr CF Blake Tekotte is probably a little underrated. He could be a good 4th OF some day. Good speed, gap power, hits for average. Real solid player.

Jr LF Adan Severino is interesting to watch play. Some strength in the bat and athleticism. I don't relaly know much about him other than seeing him once

Miami's arm are almost uniformly unimpressive to me but Sr RHP Enrique Garcia might be the best of them prospect-wise. He was drafted out of JUCO and is a big guy with a good arm but hasn't really been effective in college. Soph Kyle Bellamy has been lights out this year but I havn'nt seen him pitch.
LHP Eric Ericson get some scout mentions but he looks pretty "meh" to me. Their Sat starter, some LHP freshman...Hernandez maybe.. was good when I saw him. Not any kind of a prospect because of a lack of size and velo but it was nice seeing a kid that young with such a strong idea of how to pitch. Good curve, change and control.

Both of Miami's catchers are prospects, Fr Yasmani Grandal probably moreso than Soph Jason Hagerty. Hagerty bat has really improved this year. Grandal was a highly regarded glove out of HS last year and could have been drafted high. There were questions about his bat but he has been solid so far, avoiding the struggles that many freshmen face.

OF Dave DiNatale is a pretty good all-around player. Solid speed, solid bat, some power. He was a freshman star at UCF, transferred to Miami for his soph year and sucked but has put it back together this year

RE

well, Raben played well in the cape and he seems to be the only OF in the draft with any chance to hit for real power. he has also played well this year.
most scouts do not feel weeks will hit for this much power as a pro

oh

Im aware of that and all.

Thats just my take on it. I don't see Raben as an exceptional bat for a guy whose game is in his bat. Good raw power but I don't think his offensive game is developed enough to really make use of it enough. Overly passive at the plate to me. Its nice to wait for your pitch, its bad to strike out looking with men on and never take the bat off your shoulders. You can get him to swing and miss a bit easy.
For a guy who is supposedly an elite college hitting prospect he is a pretty easy out.

I'm not saying I'm definately right, thats just my take on it. He might go and turn into Pat Burrell on me...
I'm right sometimes (calling UCLA and 'Zona being overrated, calling Matt Kemp special before he ever reached the FSL) and I'm wrong sometimes (calling UVA a great college team, thinking Dan Meyer was going to be special after seeing him in 02 or something)

Back to Raben, as I have seen him more I do think I might have undersold his athleticism a bit. Hes no great athlete but he is a surprisingly solid one as far as 230 pound 1b/LF/RF/DHs go.

RE

no worries, I still read most of it anyway =)

you could be right about raben, however, do not forget he has a plus arm as a RF.

Weeks

I'm interested in whether scouts think his power with aluminum will translate to wood. He does lead the Canes in HRs afterall

RE

Jim Callis on a chat last week:

Jim Callis: That's somewhat shocking, because teammates Yonder Alonso and Dennis Raben also have bats that could make them first-rounders. Weeks doesn't really have that kind of pop, though, he's more of a line-drive guy. I don't think there are many teams that would grade him as having average home run power in the majors.

Obviously that isnt set in stone, but I am sure he has talked to some scouts about him

weeks

does anyone think he could be a brian roberts type player? hit .280-.290 with 10 homers, 40 doubles, and 30 or so steals? orlando hudson might be another good comp, but with more steals and a little less glove.

by fewgoodcards on Apr 11, 2008 12:10 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

re

Some interesting comps. I like the Roberts one on a few levels, but I'm not writing off Weeks' power yet. He hit homeruns from both sides of the plate in the same game with wood bats for Team USA last summer. I'm think he's could be a level higher than Roberts in terms of power, 15-18 homer range.

I think he has much more offensive upside than ODawg, and I love ODawg.

homerun power

roberts did have an 18 homer season, so i don't think comparing him to roberts is writing off weeks' power. i also consider doubles to show power, and projecting anyone to hit 40 doubles is believing they have serious pop.

RE

good comps. hudson is a pretty darn good fielder though. I will be leaving for the game here in about an hour. If anyone lives here in the south, all 3 games will be on CSS.
