jonathan sanchez!
Who all hascoppened to catch his game last night? I did and wow! He was on. It seemed the first time he got a runner on he freaked out a bit and couldnt hit the strike zone but then later with men on 2nd and 3rd and no outs he strikes out the next two guys then gets the 3rd out yet. I snatched him up last Monday night in my league hoping for a performance like this. Is this the real Jonathan Sanchez or is this a tease? I realize of course that he will still have his growing pains but come on he looked alot like that other red hot cincy rookie pitcher (not Volquez) . 10k in 6 innings. Thoughts?

As a Simulation owner of his...
I think these first two games combined are a good indication of what kind of pitcher he'll be. I think he will have some great games like last night, and I think he will have some awful games like his first start. They'll be about 50-50. So combined, his stats will look average (except his K/9). Wins 9-14 games a year depending on run support, has a slightly higher WHIP than what you'd like (in the 1.4-1.5 range), and an ERA in the 4.00-4.50 range.
I traded for him this past off season because I wanted him as a LOOGY in my bullpen on my sim team, but also because I knew he had great upside. So far he is doing about what I expected him to do. If he can have a few more games like last night, he'll be in my rotation next season.

From his first two starts
even though I haven't actually seen him pitch this year, it's obvious from his swing and miss rate that he has killer stuff. From his insanely high BABIP's, it's equally obvious that he really doesn't understand how to pitch yet and/or lacks command. He hasn't really been pitching that long....once he figures it out, he should be pretty special.

I was at the game last night
and the two biggest differences I noticed between the Sanchez of the past and present are his composure and breaking ball. The pollster touched on the fact that he looked a bit freaked out when he got a runner on base. In the past (and in Milwaukee this year - first start, we'll cut him some slack) he would have completely fallen apart. When Sanchez used to give up runs, they always came in bunches. He's always had great stuff, but his curve seems to have more bite now, probably because he is not overthrowing. And yes, there were a lot of swing throughs in which the Padres simply looked overmatched.
I'm sure Righetti has been working on Sanchez' mental game as much as his mechanics, if not more so.

High Ceiling
Jonathan's high ceiling hasn't been consistently approached due to his control issues. Many fans wanted Jonathan, rather than Noah Lowry, traded for a hitter this past winter. The only way I would have traded Jonathan would have been for a hitter with a similar ceiling.
I have some worries about the long-term health of Jonathan's arm (perhaps Husker Bob can give us some analysis), but there seems little question he has swing-through stuff.

Not many teams have a #5 starter of Correia's caliber...
and yet, he may be fighting for his starting job with Sanchez pending the return of Lowry. I guess 18 million dollar players don't need to worry about losing their jobs.

Stupidity
The Zito signing was absolutely horrific.
I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

For some reason
I get a Jeremy Affeldt vibe from Sanchez. Hard throwing, lack of command, inconsistent, may find success as a set up man.

Yup he's going to be good.
There was a story at some point last year that the Mets offered Carlos Gomez for him and were turned down. I suspect that that is accurate, and suspect that the Mets internally may have considered him a top 50 prospects at that point.
It might take time to really happen, but he'll be a good one.
Not sure he'll be a great fantasy guy this year though, but if it's a keeper league, yeah he's worth holding.
