Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The hook from a mythical beast

I thought prospect followers would enjoy this.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2M0c6DxCMY

Its from today's red sox/dodgers ST game where a top pitching prospect made an appearance. Since any footage on prospects is incredibly hard to come by, i assume this would be a treat for some people.

Its only one pitch but...its one pitch I could watch over and over :)

Looks like a big slow breaker
More of a Sheets or Zito curve than a hard breaker

PS-I'm talking only about the style of their breakers.. not making any comparisons or talking about quality - though Kershaws curve did look very good

exactly
and the question will be how well he locates this pitch as it's much harder to locate than the harder tight curve like what Lackey has.

by pedrophile on Mar 9, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Lackey
doesn't have a true curveball. It's a slurve pitch. That's why the break is a sharper break and comes in the low 80s and really isn't 12-6ish

by npurcell on Mar 9, 2008 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions

disagree
while it might have a little more tilt it's still a curve.

And being a slurve wouldn't make it tighter. It would make the depth tighter but would make the fade worse - evening out the effect. Lackey's pitch is tight.

Oh, and no-one throws a 12-6 curve. Even Kershaw was throwing a 11 to 5 curve in that video. It's just the visual of watching it drop so much that the fade isn't seen as much.

no one?
ever watch hideki okajima? his motion is totally over the top (requiring a crazy head tilt). according to pitch f/x, his curveball averages 0.2 inches of lateral movement.

by jpahk on Mar 10, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions

ahhh
but that's .2 inches too much, lol

btw - holy crap, is that ever a 12 - 6 pitch. I'll have to watch some of his clips.

WOW! Thanks for sharing NPurcell
Vin Scully is pretty selective with the praise. He has seen his share of yackers, too.

NPurcell, prospect videos are difficult to come by that's why I have posted some on YouTube myself. I have a decent collection of my own videos here you should check out. Unfortunately, I don't have the best collection of Dodgers for you.

Thanks UCFKnights
BTW, Brandon Marshall is going to be the best wide receiver in the NFL. He's the Earl Campbell of wideouts.

yup
I like you're thinking :)

I saw him at a UCF game 2 weeks ago - he looks more like a tight end but one that can run a 4.45.

+1 Thanks
Very nice to see some of these guys.  A bit of a disappointment to see some of the others though - esp Matusz.  Good work.

From the victim's mouth
"That was some of the best stuff I have seen in a long time as far as a new arm,'' Casey said. "The first pitch was a hammer, and I hate to say it was almost (Barry) Zito-like, but it broke with this 12-6 tilt. Imagine that from a guy who hits 97 (mph) with his fastball. Then he threw me another one that froze me. That was great stuff, big-league stuff, and I think he could help that team this year.''

breakout
well, he may not have broken out yet in MLB, but he has on youtube.  nearly half a million have seen kershaw's curve for what that's worth.

lotta scouts out there i guess.

insane
His youtube link was on Yahoo sports front page, posted on numerous paper/media affiliated blog.

Looks like the secret out and the bar/expectations have been set high.
