MLB 2K8.. Could It Be This Bad?

I was so pumped to get the game.. I've been waiting for the last 2-3 months to get it.. I hear all the great things about having the minor leagues, all the things they fixed/added..

Now all of a sudden they made pitching RETARTED. I really can't grasp the concept, if anyone wants to explain it please do, because I can't get it..

good one
:/.. too much time on your hands? I think so.

Also another horrible thing in the game.. When every ou make contact and you hitter is running the bases, he automatically has the mindset tp go for an inside the park homerun

Instructions
Have you tried reading the manual or using the in-game tutorial?

Retarts
They evidently aren't fans of "Reply to This" either

Are you
pushing X when running the bases?? There is no turbo on the game for baserunning, and I was hitting X trying to run faster....makes your runner go for home. Circle goes to third, triangle to second and so on.

Pitching controls
It really just takes a lot of practice. I thought the controls were infuriating at first. At first you make the initial part of the pitching movement, and hold the analog stick in that direction. When the circle grows to its largest point (or just before if you are opting for an easier method with pitches that are a bit less effective), you go into the second part of the motion. Here you move the analog stick in the direction that the pitch you are attempting illustrates. When the circle gets smaller and turns green, you finally let the analog stick go.

Its a three part process. The initial movement corresponds with the pitchers first part of his windup, the second part when he starts to bring the ball in the direction of the plate, and the release of the analog stick corresponds with the pitchers release point.

Now can someone teach me how to hit?

by The Origenist on Mar 4, 2008 6:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yup
I got to play it finally tonight, and I figured out pitching decently enough.  Although, through 1 game I didn't throw a single perfect pitch, and I thought I had more than a few.  Hitting is a whole different story though.  That's going to take some practice.

Ive heard good things about...
... the new pitching scheme, though it takes some getting used to.

I dont hear great things about the game overall though....

I hear its choppy (framerate issues) and frustrating.

I havent heard if the minor league setup is nice, nor have I heard how it is on the Wii. Im a bit curious, but my expectations have lowered a lot.

by grozzy on Mar 4, 2008 4:25 PM EST reply actions

All a bunch of bullshit
yet nobody has come and said how to do it. The instructions don't tell you shit.

GameFAQs
Is a good resource for video game questions, probably a much better one than a minor league baseball site.

Try hear for a hands on review with some instructions:

http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/sports/majorleaguebaseball2k8/news.html?sid=6186003&mode=preview s

And here for questions:

Then sing the, "I'm a big kid now" song.

by marcello on Mar 4, 2008 4:47 PM EST up reply actions

so then return it.
baseball video games are lame anyway.  They make everything way too complex (read: "realistic") so each game takes 45 minutes - and playing a 162 game schedule means you'd have to put play two hours a day for two months straight to complete one season.

by Galt on Mar 4, 2008 4:50 PM EST up reply actions

I've found the opposite
They're not nearly realistic enough and geared towards a much more traditional baseball fan. I prefer computer sims that more accurately reflect how baseball works in the real world.

If...
they ever make a sequel to the crappy Dominique Swain movie "Tart" I pray they call it "Retarted".

case in point - 'Happy Campers'

I've only
played a couple games so far, but when searching through the minor league rosters for the A's they only have real players in AAA. I wasn't at all impressed considering they had Dana Eveland on the AAA roster, but no Carlos Gonzalez. Seems like it could be a good game once you get used to the new pitching and fielder throwing.

by JPShark25 on Mar 4, 2008 5:39 PM EST reply actions

Just a thought...
.. but look for guys with similar initials and same age, etc.

Because they could not get the rights to have the players who arent in the union, they have to use replacements like Clint Kelton for Clayton Kershaw and James Bale for Jay Bruce

by grozzy on Mar 4, 2008 5:46 PM EST up reply actions

we have a bright one here
do you really think that every minorleaguer is going to be part of the MLBPA? They can't put someone's name without their consent and their consent is given as part of the union so they use fake names like Conner Gomes like the other guy said or whatever so it is obvious who it is, he will have the same height, weight, etc, but not the real name.

I mean I can't believe that they don't have the names on college games either, these guys clearly don't know anything about college sports if they can't even put DeShean Jackson, Darren McFadden or Tim Tebow on NCAA football, what idiots

the italicized comments down here are really gay

I apologize
for my rediculous ignorance baseball game god!! Get a grip man, I didn't know the rules of games and the MLBPA in and out, no need to take a stab at my intelligence. Just started playing baseball video games 3-4 months ago, so cut me some slack. Thanks for the good laugh though ;)

by JPShark25 on Mar 5, 2008 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

dick
you are.

Regardless, there are other games that have minor leaguers.

Baseball Mogul has entire minor league systems with correct names, so it's not uncommon to expect video games would have minor leaguers.

I got the show
Going to have to recreat Justin Upton though.  They gave him a C potential and yet they gave Maybin an A potential.  They also killed Felix Pie and said Homer Bailey would be a midrotational starter.

Has anyone played the Wii version?
I'm scared to buy it.  My guess is that it is historically bad.

MLB Power Pros is a pretty good game.  You don't swing the remote like a bat very often though.

Wii
I heard the Wii version was actually better than the 360/PS3. I heard the worst part about those versions was the problems with the framerate, and the Wii version doesn't have those problems because it is more low-tech.

by metsfan @ Minor League Ball on Mar 4, 2008 7:30 PM EST up reply actions

+1
I'm interested in hearing about the Wii version as well. Honestly though, I'd like to just play RBI Baseball for the Wii. Why can't they take the original RBI Baseball and just update the players and give it a franchise mode? How awesome would that be?

by Pawtucket Pat on Mar 5, 2008 12:05 PM EST up reply actions

MLB Power Pros
It reminds me a lot of RBI baseball.  It's any easy game to pick up and play but there is a lot of depth too.  Use of the Wiimote is limited though so that's why I'm still interested in 2K8.

by Snake the Jake on Mar 5, 2008 2:02 PM EST up reply actions

I checked it out a bit
MLB Power Pros, that is, and it looks pretty great except for the fact that it doesn't seem to utilize the Wiimote very much, which sort of seems to defeat the purpose of having a Wii. I wonder if they'll fix that in future editions?

by Pawtucket Pat on Mar 5, 2008 3:05 PM EST up reply actions

bigger injustice
Jay Bruce and Colby Rasmus aren't on the rosters in MLB 08 the Show.

by Galt on Mar 4, 2008 7:59 PM EST reply actions

Um
They arent allowed to be in there because they haven't played a major league game yet. They'll be in the first roster update.

the what's the point
of the MiLB logo?  Just so they can have the names of teams?  Great.

90% of the best prospects aren't on the game - how are you supposed to do a franchise with no prospects?

And even after the first roster update, the vast majority of prospects won't have played a game either, so they wouldn't be there.

by Galt on Mar 4, 2008 9:24 PM EST up reply actions

You cannot have a player
if he's not in the MLBPA.  And if he's not on the 40 man and made the show, he's not in the MLBPA.  Otherwise they'd be using a players likeness without consent.  They'd have to pay every single minor league player independently for the rights to use their name.  It's inefficient.

Players in the MLBPA make money from licensing like this.  I heard one figure that said up to 70,000 a year (I'm assuming that's for stars).

by Tyler on Mar 4, 2008 10:12 PM EST up reply actions

The Prospects Are In The Game
That's one thing the game has.. Obviously they can't put there real name but look for the initials and their age..

for example a 19 year old on Bighamton in named Felipe Mareno (SP) obviously Fernando Martinez.

Why?
I'm thinking about picking up one or the other. Can you expand on why you prefer "The Show"?
Thanks.

by coochorama on Mar 5, 2008 6:50 PM EST up reply actions

no glitches
realistic season stats in franchise, unlike MLB 2K8 which would have a pitcher throw 250+ innings and have hitters getting 700+ AB's.  The show also allows bench players to play and it also has the progressive batting, which means if you suck, abilities go down, but if your good they go up.

by Bravesin07 on Mar 5, 2008 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

re
I heard you can't edit players of franchises in dynasty mode? is that true?

also, in the Show, what is their minor league systems like? Obviously you can't play games with them, but do they have A, AA, AAA teams and can you watch their season stats progress too?
