Marmol has done the impossible

According to CBS Sportslines live scoring Carlos Marmal pitched 1.1 innings with 3k. It also says he only threw 9 pitches. ???? 3ks equals 9 pitches...... how did he get that 4th out? He is amazing.

a guess

without checking this out, i can only assume this involved picking off an inherited runner (perhaps to end an inning, then a 9-pitch 3k performance the following inning)

Without looking into it....

Maybe he came in with someone on base and two outs, and picked off a runner. That's my best guess.

No idea

The mlb.com box score says he threw 9 pitches, only 8 for strikes.

by supermets on Mar 31, 2008 7:10 PM EDT   0 recs

It also says he did not inherit any runners.

Re:

He came in with a 2Ball 2Strike count to Corey Hart because Zambrano had to leave the game during the middle of the batter. He struck out Hart and then struck out 2 and retired a batter on 8 pitches in the next inning.

by Dfarth on Mar 31, 2008 8:06 PM EDT   0 recs

Wow

Has that ever happened before?

Re:

My guess is that it has.

Maybe a better question is who deserves the strikeout of Hart. Zambrano got the first two strikes and Marmol the third.

Or an even better question - if the same situation happened but Marmol had walked him (ie they both threw him two balls) who would get the walk?

by Dfarth on Mar 31, 2008 10:51 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

My guess

Marmol would have gotten credit for the walk. If his 1 strike gets him credit for the K, his 2 balls would have to get him credit for a BB.

Correct

Fair or otherwise, the pitcher who finished the at-bat gets credited with whatever the result of the at-bat was.

Depends on the count

If it's a pitchers count then the relief pitcher would get credit for either the walk or the strikeout.

If it's a neutral or hitters count then the relief pitcher would get credit for the positive result (ie strikeout, out, etc.) but the previous pitcher would get credit for any negative result (hit, walk, etc.).

(h) A relief pitcher shall not be held accountable when the first batter to whom he pitches reaches first base on four called balls if such batter has a decided advantage in the ball and strike count when pitchers are changed.
(1) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is
2 balls, no strike,
2 balls, 1 strike,
3 balls, no strike,
3 balls, 1 strike,
3 balls, 2 strikes,
and the batter gets a base on balls, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the base on balls to the preceding pitcher, not to the relief pitcher.
(2) Any other action by such batter, such as reaching base on a hit, an error, a fielder's choice, a force-out, or being touched by a pitched ball, shall cause such a batter to be charged to the relief pitcher.
Rule 10.16(h) Comment: The provisions of Rule 10.16(h)(2) shall not be construed as affecting or conflicting with the provisions of Rule 10.16(g).
(3) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is
2 balls, 2 strikes,
1 ball, 2 strikes,
1 ball, 1 strike,
1 ball, no strike,
no ball, 2 strikes,
no ball, 1 strike,
the official scorer shall charge that batter and the actions of that batter to the relief pitcher.
(i) When pitchers are changed during an inning, the relief pitcher shall not have the benefit of previous chances for outs not accepted in determining earned runs.

I stand corrected.

Man, is that ever a weird rule. A page of rules dealing with a situation that comes up, maybe, once or twice a season. Why not just simplify things?

hmmm

I am not sure Marmol would appreciate you talking about his 2 balls.

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

He'd probably be more upset

if we were talking about 1 ball.

Eh, he wouldn't get too mad
