Hosmer v. Smoak v. Alonso
Who would you rather have?
Alonso - best pure OBP and avg. guy out of the three. Power is a serious question
Smoak - results havent always been there since he was the Cape Cod MVP his soph. year.
Hosmer - Scouts rave about the swing...drawing comparisons to Giambi, Texeira, Kotchman...

Smoak
I think Smoak is the best hitter of the three and will have the best career (easy).

Smoak
Smoak - Ive heard he has gold glove defense and is projected to be a 40 HR hitter.
Hosmer - I was high on him but I am now hearing different things. Ive read his power is average right now and he projects as a casey kotchman. I would like him around mid first round.
Alonso - Havent heard much on him except that he doesnt have much power and I hate that in a first baseman. Im not a big daric barton, or sean casey, or ryan garko fan.

RE
yeah I agree on Alonso...I wouldnt take a 1B first round unless I KNEW he was gonna hit for power...to say Smoak "projects" to hit 40 is pretty generous....I think he has the bat speed and loft to...but your right, he is good defensively

Smoak
Switch-hitter, with massive power, gold glove defense.
Seriously, what more could you want in a 1b?

alonso
where exactly did alonso get this no power rep? he hit 18 homers last year in college then went up to the cape and led his team with 4 homers and 12 doubles. i have also seen him hit some serious bombs when watching on tv.
i'm not completely sold on smoak. yes he has a ton of power potential, but he has never hit for much of an average in college, he was terrible for team usa last summer, and now he is 4th on his team in homers this spring. expect more.

+ 1
I'd do plus a million but, I am after all, one guy :-)
Alonso hit a homer over the batters eye in Miami the other day as well as a jack to left field, He has TERRIFIC power and I would take him first of the 3, He has gotten real serious about his conditioning in the last season as well.

RE
there are alot of guys who hit bombs with aluminum...I am saying his swing may not be conducive to doing that consistently as a pro.

Okay true enough
I guess id say that his overwhelming positves outway a supposed negative. He MAY not have plus power and he MAY not be Keith Hernandez with the glove. I think he WILL hit .300+ and have a .400+ OBP and a good possibilty he may be WAY over that.
Lots of talk about whether he'll have plus power or glove or not.
Not nearly enough talk about the fact that he walked twice as much as he K'd last year (60 some to 30 some) and he's IMPROVING on that this year (28 to 10). The man CONTROLS the strike zone! He also has real good power... is REAL dedicated, which means as much as anything else at this high a level for a player... and hes fine with the glove too.
He's going to be a hell of a major leaguer let me tell you, I admit I need to watch more of Smaok and Hosmer to evaluate the 3 of them but, I've seen a lot of Alonso and what a hitter he is.

RE
Like I said, Smoak hasnt lived up to expecations...with that said, he did hit 22 HR last year and is getting pitched around like crazy.
Smoak will never hit 300. But, he has a good eye..his K/BB ratio is almost 1:1 which is very good...and 43% of his hits last year were for extra bases...his is a run producer plain and simple.
I woldnt say Alonso has a "lack of power" or "no power" but right now he dosent project to be alot more of a gap to gap hitter because the lack of loft in his swing.

re
i'm just saying i prefer alonso b/c he will hit .300 and still have 25 homers. smoak may hit 35 homers some day, but he is only going to hit .250 or .260. both will likely be high on base percentage guys, while smoak is the better defender. overall they are very similar and i could see any argument for either, but i would take the guy i know is going to hit and that is alonso.

well, I do not know that everyone is solid that he will hit 25 HR.

25 homers
what, you think he is going to hit 31 in his first 2 years in college and then come out and hit 15 in a full mlb season? sure he hits a lot of line drives the other way, but when alonso turns on a pitch, it goes a long way. i'm not worried about his power.

RE
Well, if we are saying 25 is his ceiling, chances are he doesnt reach that ceiling every year is what i am saying.
hell, i like him just fine...i have in my projection the marlins taking him 6th and i think that is justified.
I'm saying this - he could hit 25 HR and hit .310 with a 900 OPS sure...but, he could also be a sean casey or scott hatteburg...
Also, how many HR he has hit is pretty inconsequential to me as there is not really a definate link between HR hit in college and HR hit as a pro..plenty of guys hit for tons of power in college and none in the pros. Which is why scouts look at the swing..and his swing doesn't project the power you would want in a 1st round 1B who plays average first base

Alonso
I think he could be similar to Edgar Martinez, but 1B instead of DH. After Alonso I'd take Hosmer. Almost all of what I've read has been good or very good, and I liked the video I saw of him. I just don't really trust Smoak.

Re: Smoak
Justin Smoak will never hit .300. What he will give you is a bat that can produce 30-40 HRs in the middle of the lineup which will lead to 100+ runs driven in. Alonso is a talented hitter, but he can't match Smoak's power OR defense. If I am a Major League team that needs a run producing 1b who can actually play the position, its Smoak all the way. Smoak being a switch-hitter (power from both sides) makes him that much sexier.

I live near San Francisco
I live near San Francisco, so saying that Smoak is sexier because he is a switch-hitter might have a different meaning should he be drafted by the Giants.

speaking of Smoak
I drafted him instead of Villalona, was I crazy?
by sourstuff on Mar 29, 2008 10:07 PM EDT 0 recs
You won't know for a long time but...
Taking Smoak in front of Villalona certainly contrradicts conventional wisdom.

One thing that worries me
Smoak's college profile is so similar to Travis Lee. I realize that there's no causal relation, but I do have that concern.
We'll see how Smoak does this year. I was really high on him coming out of high school and after his freshman year. If he can bounce back some this year, then he probably stays ahead for me.
My bigger concern is that both Alonso and Hosmer sound like DH types to me more than 1Bs. If they can hit, great, but if they struggle at all, they might end up like Josh Phelps. At least with Smoak you know he'll be able to start in the majors, even if he doesn't end up being a major stud.
