SAL 2008

The midwest and FSL league threads are up, so rather than hijack, I decided to start the SAL thread....

There's some exciting players to watch this year [according to MilB]... The Nats' duo of Smoker and Burgess should be fun... Betances is playing for Charleston... Matt Dominguez... the Mets' 17 yo-import-SS Wilmer Flores [anyone got any info on him?]... and of course Big V [who I will be making a trip to see... hopefully I'll get some pics/vid of him]...

Any others we should be watching for?

Greensboro

Greensboro is going to have a sick roster this year.

Matt Dominguez is the big draw, but also uber athlete and 2nd round pick Mike Standon will be in the lineup.

Along with a couple projectable young arms in Hector Correa, Kyle Kaminska, Andrew Paulauskas, and Alejandro Sanabia

Mets...

I'm not sure what the Mets are going to do with both Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada. Flores is the more highly touted prospect if there is such a thing at age 17, but Tejada showed exceptional strike zone judgement last year, with a .466 OBP in 121 AB's in the VZL, then a .401 OBP in 120 GCL AB's. He also went 6 for 12 this Spring....

If there's a choice between sending one or the other to full season ball Tejada would seem to have a leg up, but these are the Mets. I wouldn't put it past them to send them both, with Tejada going to St. Lucie. The SAL team could look a lot like last year, as they rushed a few guys who should repeat the level, most notably Fransisco Pena...

Augusta

Giants fans are particularly excited about the infield trio of Angel Villalona, Nick Noonan, and Charlie Culberson. Noonan and Culberson were HS draftees last June, and Noonan has shown advanced hitting prowess for his age. And the #10 overall pick, HS lefty Madison Bumgarner, should be assigned to Augusta. And although they were old for the NWL, the Giants' Rookie league team won their league handily, so some of those guys will be in Augusta as well - it will be interesting to see who (if any) stands out in low A.

For SF fans, hope lies in Augusta, Georgia, not San Francisco, California.

Lexington

Look for a few outfielders in Lexington

Colin Delome - 5th round pick of the Astros last year, solid corner guy, hit .300 in NYPL

Brandon Barnes - still learning baseball and gaining some pop 10 HR in NYPL

As for pitchers
Jason Dominguez had 10 saves and a 1.35 ERA. surprising for a late round draft pick

Leandro Cespedes got two starts late in the season after doing well in the Appy League. Has 12 K's in 12 1/3 innings in his stint in the SALLY. Good change & curve to compliment a low 90's fast ball.

Yanks should have some exciting prospects there too

Jesus Montero will probably be the starting catcher, and Abraham Almonte, Brandon Laird, Austin Romine, and Jairo Heredia might be there as well. Dellin Betances and Zach McAllister might also start out in the SAL. It should be among the most exciting Yankee organizations to follow.

Rome Braves

They should have a pretty interesting team this year. The pitching staff will be fairly stacked with an all southpaw review of Jeff Locke, Steve Evarts, Chad Rodgers and Jose Ortegano all possibly starting off the year in the rotation. There is a possiblity that the Braves will place Rohrbough back at Rome to start off the year although I see them challenging him at MB after the year he had last season.

Cody Johnson should be roaming (or attempting to roam) LF at Rome this year. There has been talk that Jason Heyward may be placed at Rome as well. Even if Heyward doesn't start the year in the SAL I would expect him in Rome sooner rather than later.
