Minor League Draft Outfield Targets

Hey guys,

I'm in a mixed, points based keeper league without salaries, but I wanted to get people's opinions on these minor league outfielders. We score one point for each total base, steal, run, rbi, and walk/hbp.

Here the are the guys I'm looking at, if you could rank them:

1. Chase Headley - I really like his power spike in Double-A San Antonio last year, being that its traditionally a tough park on hitters. He also seems to be a guy capable of hitting .300 and racking up walks, both of which help in points formats.

Bonus points: I have Kouzmanoff as a backup 3b. Getting Headley ensures me a solid 3b backup, in case the Fathers want to move Kouz to OF. He'll be up this year, most likely

2. Jordan Schaffer - I like his power/speed combo, but will he have enough pop and walks to become really valuable? In points leagues, speed isn't important but it helps. Walks are as good as a hit and tend to be more consistant, also adding to runs. What is his upside in these areas?

Bonus Points: Looks like he could see some serious PT at some point this year. The Braves are pretty dedicated to bringing up youngsters and he should be able to hold onto his job once he arrives.

3. Matt Laporta - Of the four listed here, he probably has the highest power upside which is huge in this format. He's also a polished hitter so his walks would help. His bat might be major league ready now and he'll be in a potent lineup. The main problem is, will he stick in the outfield?

4. Jason Heyward - People are expecting huge things from his high schooler. He supposedly has huge power upside and a polished approach. He's years away but looks like a top-10 talent in the making. I could afford to wait, but is he worth passing on the three guys above?

5- Travis Snider - Young, talented and might make an appearance fairly soon. How will his plate discipline hold up?

Thanks

+1

that is how I would rank them fantasy wise. However, in real life I think Schafer is higher.

OK

I suppose but, Headly will hit 20+ homers THIS season. I think the Pads would have gone with him had Edmonds not gotten hurt but they were afraid of going with 2 inexperienced OF'sd out there. My feeling is he'll be up in a couple weeks actually. He's too good keep down. In fact, besides maybe Agonzo, he looks like the padres best hitter.

LaPorta is going to be beast as a hitter but Im not sure if he'll ever become a good of. Lots of talk about laParta taking over 1b in 2010 if Prince is dealt.

Snider has a terrific batting, wouldnt worry. Don't be too surprised if you see him in September in Toronto.

Lotsa love for Heyward but i woulndt take him over ANY of the previous 3 guys. I look at keeping an 18 year old kid on a roster as a waste unless he is a totally, cant miss superstar and Im not sure Heyward is even as good as those three guys.

Shafer is really going to be a hell of a player as well but I dont play fantasy so defense dont matter right?

headley

I'm leaning towards headley right now because of the flexibility he'll give my team and because I think he can produce right away.

He's basically been known to have limited power upside but it looks like he's really turned it on in the past year. He hit 20 jacks in San Antonio last year, which I believe is one of the toughest hitter's parks in the minors. He then had a huge spring. I read a report that he's added a lot of upper body strength which could explain a power jump.

In addition, it looks like he can post an .300+ avg and high OBP.

If he stays in OF I think he'll be above average to very good. If he moves to 3b he could be a top 3bagger in the game offensively.

Jack Cust is this year's Marcus Thames

...
Laporta
Snider
Heyward
Headley
Schafer

....i like schafer better than headley, but for fantasy purposes i suppose headley gets the nod... Heyward's ceiling is the best

RE

Um, I dont know how to say this but if you take Loporta before those other guys you are crazy haha.

Here is my list NOT taking into time away from the majors...

1) Heyward
2) Snider
3) Schafer ( I see him as one of those guys who dosent steal as much in the majors as he did in the minors.
4) Headley
5) Loporta

No

You are crazy. First it's LaPorta and second he is probably the most sure thing out of all the players. Headley is the only one that is closer to the majors and LaPorta is a better prospect than Headley. For fantasy baseball LaPorta is a much better player than Headley or Schafer.

BTW

I like your blog. Do you do it year round?

by nyy601 on Mar 26, 2008 2:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Pretty straightforward

Laporta-Just where does he play..Look at the Brewer OF and they are all young, and Fielder isn't going anywhere
Jordan Schaefer-Just about ready & has the magical roto combo of Power and speed, most likely more speed but still would a 15-65-20 guy be all that bad?
Headley - Will be playing Soon, just not enough power in that cavernous park
-INSERT HUGE GAP HERE-
Now the High schoolers, Snider and Heyward because they are a bit away, because anyone who has played roto for a while knows that for every Griffey or Arod there are 1000 Kiki Jones or Jerome Walton.

Maybin

LaPorta
Snider
Headley
Heyward
Schafer

Just out of curiosity, where would everyone put Maybin on this list? I'm starting to question whether or not his SB potential makes up for his high K rate and lack of power in comparison to LaPorta, Snider or Headley.
