Fantasy Roster Gloat Thread
I figured most people have had or are having their fantasy baseball drafts, and who doesn't love to brag? Sure you might look stupid in your hubris later on, but you may as well post your roster and bask in the the sunlight of overconfidence in your team's odds of winning while you can. I'll start off, so here's my beastly AL-only keeper league team in a 10 team rotisserie league:
C: John Buck
C: Jeff Mathis
1B: Paul Konerko
3B: Miguel Cabrera
CO: Billy Butler
2B: Howie Kendrick
SS: Jason Bartlett
MI: Brian Roberts
DH: Curtis Granderson
OF: Nick Markakis
OF: Alex Rios
OF: Delmon Young
OF: Adam Jones
OF: Travis Buck
SP: Erik Bedard
SP: Felix Hernandez
SP Javier Vazquez
P Jeremy Guthrie
P Ervin Santana
P Daniel Cabrera
RP Francisco Liriano
RP Octavio Dotel

i still really like my team, regardless of what lagoofy thought about it. i have a massive hole in CF after 08, but for this year, rocco baldelli is decent enough.
i didn't plan on using scott elbert, but his sim stats are tremendous, and i can't resist playing him. all of my starting pitching is under contract for multiple years, as is all of my starting lineup, minus pedro feliz.
i love my bullpen.

Hard to evaluate a 30 team roster
But I'd say your team is in for a world of hurt. Probably one of the worst teams I've ever seen.
Your catcher is a backup. Your 1B is at the lower end of the sepectrum. You have the worst hitting 3B in the majors. As an Aaron Hill owner it was nice to have him with a break out year, but as a back up. Your CF isn't even playing this year, or maybe ever again. The best player on your lineup is Ethier and he isn't even going to get 500 AB this year.
Just sad..
As for your rotation. Your 1 is joke, McGowan could be the real deal. Good luck with him because he could have a monster year this year. He might be the only bright spot of the rotation. The rest isn't very good, and btw John Patterson was released.
Your pen is OK, but after Wagner you dont have one real life stud closer or set up man.
Really, I don't know how much time you put into that team but it isn't something to be proud of.
Note: I don't know if DMB takes real life into account at all. But for a regular team, i don't see how you don't finish in the cellar.
Remember: baseball guys... baseball...

i've been hit hard with some injuries
i got patterson coming off his 2006, hoping for a rebound last year. it didn't happen, and yes he was released. i don't mind so much that he was released, though signing with TEX was probably a worst case scenario from my point of view.
jason schmidt had successfully made the transition from power pitcher to above average innings eater going into 2007, and i was fairly sure that he would be successful for a long time to come, but again, he got hurt, and now, he's battling uphill for a spot in the rotation.
baldelli is an albatross, but i can eat his contract with little problem. again, i was hoping for a rebound.
i actually like my lineup a lot. there are no stars, and there's very little speed, but i project 5 guys that will end up with 20 HRs in sim, plus another 3 that have an outside chance. you're selling feliz really short. he's got a lot of power, and he's an excellent fielder.
and once again, this is a sim league, not just a rotisserie league. defense counts. and performance in MLB is not prorated to account for playing time, so a backup like ramon castro, who has absolutely crushed the ball, is worth a little bit more than a guy like brian schnieder, who is ass, and gets plenty of playing time to prove it

No
30-team rosters are much easier to evaluate, because the talent levels are generally realistic and you can compare them to a MLB roster. It's when you get to 8-, 10-, 12-, 14-, 16-team leagues (anything less than 24, really) that are difficult to figure out. But then I'm a sim guy and not a fantasy guy.

Not the first season...
That team was not recently drafted. I am in the same league and it has been going on since 2003. Variablesdont I think is in his third (maybe fourth) year in the league, but the person who was GM of the team before was pretty bad. When Variablesdont took over the team it had very few commodities and lacked a lot of their earlier draft picks, which were traded for role players and such.
I know this team does not look great, and he and I have had many conversations about it. But he knows how to find diamonds in the rough that sim well (particularly RPs). Been running some test sims with these players and he can usually finish above 500 and occasionally makes a run at the division. The big problem is that he is in a division with a team that has been to three of the last four World Series in our league (winning one I think) and has a strong major league and reserve roster with a large salary cap number.

I traded Prince for Cabrera last year and kept him.
I drafted Crawford and Sizemore in the first year draft and got Peavy coming off of an off year luckily.
For some reason, the league thought Holliday's 2006 was a fluke, so I got him relatively late too.

Get a tougher league to play in Hammer
I noticed that you have 2 Howie Kendricks. If you were going to clone someone you'd probably be better off to do Billy Butler.

it probably helps prove your point, but one of the Kendricks is actually supposed to be Brian Roberts. I am participating in other leagues though, but this one has money involved so dominating doesn't hurt.

In which case
1) I want to get into your league
2) I will say you have done a great job. The only spot I would quibble about is Dotel's. Couldn't you have picked a Devine or a Sarfate? A 34 year old who has averaged less than 20 innings/yr in the last 3 years and who is having a bad spring training is . . . probably a guy you will waive and replace with someone who is a late bloomer anyway. And Escobar is out for at least most of the season. Or his entire career.

It was a snaking draft. I snagged Braun with the 12th and Phillips with the thirteenth. I just dropped Escobar and added George Sherrill who wasn't drafted. I really tried to get power/speed guys early which is why I have Braun, Phillips, Byrnes, etc.

30 Team DMB League
Same league as Variables up there is in. Three round draft every season. Varying salary cap for each team which goes up and down depending on performance. If you lose a top free agent in the offseason you receive a compensation pick (or multiple ones for multiple FAs lost). You get control of players for 6 years after you start using them. You can extend players up to two years past that with a long term contract for more money. 25 man active roster and up to a 25 man reserve roster. We try to keep it as realistic as possible. Defense matters. You also receive discount rights for free agents on your team.
My team:
Pitchers:
Derek Lowe (signed free agent)
Justin Verlander (drafted)
Nate Robertson (via trade)
Mark Prior (had since the league started)
Tim Lincecum (drafted)
Sean Marshall (via trade)
Jonathan Sanchez (via trade)
Rafael Soriano (via trade)
Joel Zumaya (via trade)
Huston Street (drafted)
Matt Wise (via trade- then re-signed)
Neal Cotts (via trade)
Craig Breslow (via trade)
Gio Gonzalez (via trade)
Mike Hinkley (drafted)
Phil Humber (drafted)
Jon Leceister (originally with the team)
And a few other guys that aren't worth a crap lol.
Hitters:
Jason Bay (via trade, and looking to trade again)
Shelley Duncan (free agent signing)
Joey Gathright (drafted)
Jermaine Dye (free agency)
Mike Lowell (free agency)
Ryan Garko (via trade)
Kaz Matsui (free agency)
Jack Wilson (free agency)
Tony Abreu (drafted)
Brad Ausmus (free agency)
Benjie Molina (free agency)
Scott Spiezio (free agency... can back up a lot of positions in the league)
Endy Chavez (free agency)
Delwyn Young (via trade)
Bernie Castro (via trade)
Jake Fox (via trade)
Yung Chi Chen (via trade)
And a few other hitters that won't do crap.
Not a great team, but in the seven years we have been simming this league, I have never finished below 500. Trying to rebuild my young player base now, so I may this year. Getting tougher to trade for players though since the other GMs in the league are getting more and more prospect-oriented. They are starting to be valued more than major leaguers in our league. Shelley Duncan sims better than Jason Bay (in his 5th year) so I want to see what I can get for him as the season starts. Maybe a draft pick and young player or something... we'll see.

Duncan sims better than Bay
Does that mean you can use Duncan for as many games or plate appearances as you want, or more than Bay? There's something wrong with that.
by Flynn Blake on Mar 26, 2008 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah...
Bay has been giving me about a 260BA (360 OBP) with about 20-28 HR per test sim I have been running. Sometimes a little less, and rarely a little more. Duncan has been giving me anywhere between 250-270 in BA (about 100-130 points higher in OBP) and consistently over 35-40 HRs. We aren't limited to ABs or games based on real life. We have no playing time restrictions at all and don't use real life injuries either. If a player is on the projection disk, then we can use them as much as we want.

Fausto Carmona
Barry Zito
Jon Lester
Adam Loewen
Anthony Reyes

Tony Clark
Kevin Millar
Ryan Shealy
Outfielders:
Nick Markakis
Aaron Rowand
Norris Hopper
Dave Roberts
Cliff Floyd
Tim Raines Jr
Jeremy Reed
Shin Soo Choo
I took over Baltimore so I get to use the DH. Chipper Jones was my big signing this year and I plan on using him at DH since I have Ryan Zimmerman. Jones is my back-up for 3B. I had a little more depth but I traded it away to improve my active roster since I think I can compete for the next two or three years for the title. I plan on my rotation being Halladay-Francis-Carmona-Zito-Lester and Fuentes is closing. Capps is my RH set up guy and Marte is my LH set up guy. I traded for Cordero last season and had to give up Hermida to get him. I couldn't use Hermida so I had to trade him. He and Markakis were both only RFs.
My line-up will be something like Hopper-Pedroia-Markakis-Chipper-Pena-Zimmerman-Soto-Rowand-Escobar.

I'll Assume This is 5x5
If it is, your team indeed looks pretty strong. You could have some minor problems if younger guys like Buck and Jones don't live up to the higher end of their expectations, but this looks like it will be a tough squad to beat. If you have dump deals in this league, you've probably also got a lot of cheap talent to dump.

20 keepers + 15 farm players, my team's current salary cap is $284. I am the two-time defending champ, this will be the fourth season of the league's existance. this is a 24 team league, not a fantasy league, we play Dynasty baseball, which is like StratoMatic. . . keeper league, my franchise is the Angels, so i can protect any of the minor leaguers before the appear in the bigs. . .

Really turned the team around, this is my fourth year in the league, and the team i took over was horrible. Aside from Peavy, Krod, and Zito, the team was bad, i think i won 45 games the first year. . .
