Cam Maybin optioned to AA Carolina

According to the Sun Sentinel, Marlins centerfield prospect Cam Maybin was optioned to AA following the Marlins game vs the Astros this afternoon. Probably the best thing that could have happened for him and his development. Cam had 3 homers in the spring, but saw just 2 walks to 15 strikeouts in 42 at bats. Cody Ross and Alejandro De Aza will probably split time in CF now.

No need to rush. The CF job is his when he's ready.

Great prospect...

...but not the greatest HITTING prospect. If that makes sense. AA is going to do him a LOT of good. Get ready to get angry folks. More than anyody else Cam reminds me of ...Mike Cameron! lol

Camy is a "self made" hitter. If Maybin works at it like Mike he could be that good too...maybe better.

I wonder

what % of CF prospects get compared to Mike Cameron? It has to be about 90.

At least :-)

Cameron reminds me more of Cameron than any though...I swear.

All of the black ones do

None of the white ones, except maybe Drew Stubbs, and that's probably only because his name sounds vaguely black.

hmm

Let's see, fast, has power, excellent defence, strikes out, projecting for a low average. Sounds like Cameron to me. Oh, wait I forgot. He's black so it must be true.

but enough with the joking, why do people cry racism when a black person happens to be compared to another black person?

Well

To me Chris Young is a better comp for Mike Cameron. Cameron has always hit for low avg, somewhat like Chris Young. To compare Maybn to Cameron is selling him short a bit, it could be his floor ceiling but he has more potential than that.

Okay

I agree that Maybin POTENTIALLY could hit for a huigher average than Mike But, don't you think there are several indicators that maybin might be a .260-.270 hitter himself? I really like maybin more than many of the haters of him on here but, I'd say there is a chance he could end up as not as good a hitter as Mike Cameron and if he DID end up that good I wouldn't be that disappointed.

RE

I agree his defense factors into him being a better prospect

however, he has alot more speed than cameron ever did.

Crazy talk

cameron is a glider... a really good CF and he can fly. He's a good base stealer as well. You OBVIOSLY haven't seen him run.

not like Cameron

My favorite thing about Cameron was his ability to take a walk. Tons of them in the minors. That is exactly Maybin's primary weakness IMO, so I do not see him as another Cameron.

Still, I like Maybin, and I think Fla is doing the right thing in sending him down for a while.

by journeymen on Mar 26, 2008 11:45 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

what?

in 83 games Maybin had 43 walks (projecting for 85 in a season) with an isolated on base of .89 points.

This is excellent. That was in A ball. In AA he had 6 walks in 6 games. He of course struggled in MLB in his 20 games at age 20. Big deal.

Maybin can and will walk.

I'm sorry

You're right. I was just going off his mlb numbers, stupidly forgetting about his minor league stats. And Cameron wasn't exactly a walking machine when he first came up to the Bigs. For that matter, he never did produce walks at the same rate that he did in the minors. Okay chalk it up to one more Maybin = Cameron.

no need to apologize :)

just good baseball discussion here.

I think many don't like comparisons, not implying yourself, to Cameron because they see that as some kind of slight on Maybin. They tend to forget how very good Cameron is. He won't be in the HOF but is a very good ball player.

Good to hear

Cameron needs more time in AA. He's still very young. It's no shame for him to be in AA for more development time (he's way ahead of most players his age.)
