Joey Votto. He is better than Headley or Soto and he will get a head start on Bruce, Rasmus, and Maybin.

A head start to the bench maybe

Hatteburg is far too gritty to ride the bench the whole year.

Dusty is where Reds prospects go to die...

Votto, Bruce, Cuerto are done for -- they cannot overcome the power of Dusty.

JR Towles

would be my guess

Soto- above average offensive numbers and playing catcher on a division winner will get him the nod.

I suppose it would be false. Either way- Soto wins.

this one is an easy false

i have no idea what to make of Soto, but his "for-real" side ISN'T being fantastic/repeating last year.

Headley has a genuine shot (though I just read somewhere that he'd start in the minors -- not sure if it's true).

Rasmus, Bruce and Maybin will NOT be good in the majors this year, even if they do end up with a significant number of at-bats, so dismissing them is a no-brainer.

This time, I'm not even being contrarian (if still inevitably right) taking the field.

I think my personal favorite would be Votto, then Fukudome (who will undoubtedly get fewer votes than he deserves because of stubborn sportswriters). But my vote would still go to [unnamed darkhorse who emerges from nowhere and may or may not have a career of any note].

Or I could just dream about it being Clayton Kershaw, after another 3 inning, 1 H, 1 BB, 6 K performance tonight. (Not really, of course. His innings will be too low, even if his performance were good -- unlikely in and of itself. But I still wanted to talk about Kershaw's outing)

Is he going to

make the team?? That would be amazing.

by Tyler on Mar 25, 2008 9:44 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

doubt it

i think Torre said it was as close to 100% that he wouldn't start with the team as is possible. but then again, i'm shocked he travelled with the team to AZ if they're not considering him at all. maybe the temptation of using him is too great? Torre did say that he's also 100% sure Kershaw would help the team if he were on it right now (even if it hurt Kershaw's long-term development).

anyway, money's still against Kershaw, especially since they want innings low. but a call-up after a month or two seems almost assured if he does keep pitching well.

Brewers

Capuano is presumably out for the year and BDD is reporting that Vargas has been let go. Parra has an outstanding shot at making the big league roster and being quite the contributor.

by bbdbrandon on Mar 25, 2008 11:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

And Gallardo will start the season on the DL, I think

So Parra should make the team out of spring training, and if he's good, he'll stick.

Xavier Nady will be traded early in the season, and Steve Pearce will be called up and play his way to the NL ROY.

False

I'm going with Jay Bruce. He'll get called up earlier then everyone expects and bat low enough in the order where he will see excellent pitches. Hitting at GAB will allow his homer totals to soar.

Chase Headley

Uh, I meen FALSE

I think therre should be one vote cast for a guy who has been sensational all spring.

I think he'll spend all of 2 weeks in AAA and hit.286 with 24 homers...at Petco.

He's my pick.

False-Soto

I agree with an earlier post. Soto has all around game...Good hitting catcher with defensive ability and on a team that will contend this season. He will win it this season.

True!

Hiroki Kuroda should post a pretty solid season in LA. I am actually quite surprised noone has mentioned him yet.

I don't trust Dusty & Co. to call up Bruce in time to log enough AB's, and I think Rasmus will need a bit of an adjustment period before he starts killing NL pitching. Soto is a big "?" as to whether his 2007 AAA stats are real. Maybin still has some work to do to be a productive major leaguer. Headley could post a solid season, but his home park will keep his power numbers down (which, absent of SB's, is what voters use for most awards - see Ryan Braun beating Tulo for ROY last year).

MLB will change the eligibility rules during the season to accomodate him, and Tim Lincecum will win.

Race is too wide open to pick otherwise.

My darkhorses are Manny Parra and Stephen Pearce.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Parra

he's more of a rainbow pegasus that will fly magestically into the award ceremony.

So no more darkhorse talk.

My thought

I don't like the job situations/likely numbers for anyone listed by John, so I'll take the Fukudome/Towles/some darkhorse "field" on this one. I suspect Soto will be the highest ranking of the ones listed at the end of the year, but don't see him winning. Someone, probably a pitcher or a guy who seems "blocked" right now, will likely win the award, deserving or not...

Morales....

I just have a good feeling about Franklin Morales....once he gets those walks done, he's gonna impress.

Happ

After the Phils take control of the division, their arms start to fail. They reach down to triple A and pull up JA Happ from Lehigh Valley. He pulls a Kyle Kendrick only better, and leads the Phils to WS victory.

Okay, so it's a stretch but there's my $.02.
