Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Can I get a better Catcher?

My keeper team I have Ronny Paulino (C-PIT)& Chris Snyder (C-ARI). I have the opportunity to draft JR Towles C or Tylor Teagarden C. Should I do it or stick with the two I have. The league scoring is:

Outs: -2
Singles: 5
Doubles: 10
Triples: 15
Homers: 20
Runs: 3
RBI: 3
Walks: 4
HBP: 3
GIDP: -2
Steals: 5
Caught Stealing: -7

I will need to hold 2 catchers through the year, I can keep 3 but I don't want to use up 3 roster spots on catchers. I have a good team and came in 3 place last year, so it is not a rebuilding year and would need production from the young catchers for at least the 2ed half of the season. What should I do?

Um
jwjc, I'm not trying to be a complete dick, but why do you even own a team? Honestly. All the threads you've started on this site ask for advice. Why do you even bother? Isn't this about testing your own knowledge, judgment and courage?

But...
There comes a point when any good fantasy owner knows that they should have to have their hand held on every transaction they make. I used to make threads like these and ask a bunch of people what they thought about deals I had pending early in my fantasy playing days, but now I know enough to make my own decision on deals. You just need to become comfortable with the amount of knowledge you have about the game before you can make all your decisions on your own.

It is ok
then to come here and make these types of posts as long as you are starting out in the fantasy league world. Sounds good to me.

Why would he?
If he believes that he is right about his decision then why would he want to get the opinion of others? As of right now you can tell that he doesn't have a grasp for fantasy baseball since he is unsure of which players he should pursue. I am not saying he is doing the wrong thing here by posting his question. What I am saying is that he is in a learning process. Once he starts to understand how to evaluate the players better than he will be able to make these judgment calls on his own, thus he won't post here asking questions. It's just all a matter of time when he will be able to do that.

OK
If it matters, I have been playing fantasy baseball for about 5 years. Last year I joined a keeper league with 40 man rosters. So, I have no experience rating miner league players and guessing how they will do in the pros. I was happy to find this site and get some feedback on some young players and miner league prospects. I also see similar questions on this site with no negative feedback. I took the advice last time and added a little more about my league. If I need to post differently please let me know.

I consider myself obsessed with fantasy sports (sad as that might be), but if I ever become a snob about them please shoot me.

I'm not so sure
If we look back on any of the recent "highly touted" catchers, we will see major disappointments, sans Russell Martin. I would go for the best talent available. I would need a little more information about the draft before I tell you go with Towles. Is Wieters* or Laporta availabe? Go with them before you go with a prospect catcher. They tend to take a longer time to develop. *I understand that Wieters is a catcher, but he is also considered one of the purest hitters of the recent draft, so I like him.

You aren't giving us enough info
Snyder looks fine to me.  Paulino, however, could not throw out his mother if she attempted to steal.  As he lacks several other skills that major league clubs generally require of their catchers, I feel that he will be an ex-major league catcher in short order.  I assume Wieters is unavailable.  If he is available he would be the best minor leaguer available, but might be called up late (or not at all) in the year  Are these guys available/draftable?;
Geo Soto - Guys are saying that Piniella will be rough on him, blah, blah, blah.  From what I've read, Soto is a quality defensive player who looks like he has an explosive bat. The 2nd stringer is Henry Blanco, so Soto will play.
John Buck - average could take a hit, but lots of power.  I really like this guy for a (hunchy) bunch of reasons I don't have time to get into now.
Kurt Suzuki - average should be good, power will suffer
Good luck.

K, it sounds like deep league
I like Towles better than Teagarden (who doesn't have a place to play presently, and won't dislodge Salty in the future).
If you have waiver options keep an eye on Jeff Mathis (if available).  He hasn't shown well hitting yet and he will split bats with Napoli BUT he hit pretty well in the minors.  He's young and capable, defensively.

Towles
Towles minor league stats are comparable to Russell Martin -- Only better.

Choices
I don't really like Paulino long term because he could truly end up in a splitting of the job scenario with Ryan Doumit.  If Doumit produces at the level he did last year which meant about 9 hr's in 250 ab's along with solid average, etc - Doumit could find himself playing behind the plate 2 times a week at minimum.  If Doumit produces - he could play 3 times a week behind the plate along with a game in the OF to keep his stick in the line-up.

Snyder looks to be a safe bet initially.  With Montero dinged up - you are probably going to see Snyder get 5 games a week however if he struggles with the stick (which he has done in the past), they are going to start working Montero into the line-up.

I personally don't see either of these guys as must haves.  If you think you can grab Doumit - then Paulino may not be bad as Doumit will be usable in the OF and maybe even 1B giving you flexibility with that roster spot you do not want to use on a catcher.  If you look at the catcher rankings and see a lot of guys that will be available in the 14-30 range - then I would drop both these guys because there will be 14 other guys just as capable as they are.

Your Scoring System Gives me a Headache
But I'd probably vote for Paulino and Towles. Snyder is Ok, but I don't see much more upside, and Teagarden might not make a significant major league impact until mid-2009 if not later.
