J Sanchez for the Giants...

What do people think of J Sanchez?

Star-divide

I really liked him coming out of the SAL league, great stats, reported mid-90s heat, some secondary stuff, all looking good. Then I hated what the Giants have done with him since, bouncing him from RP to SP and back. It seemed to get him off track, and he's struggled.

This spring it sounds like a little tweak with mechanics and he's back to dominating. I've heard some people have high hopes for him.

My questions are:

Since 2005 it seems his reported velocity dropped from mid-90s to low-90s, do you know how hard he's throwing now?

What do you feel his ceiling comp might be?

Thanks!

Sanchez has always had the potential.  How many lefty starters out there who sit 92-94 MPH and can get it up to 96?  The only question was whether he needs a tad more seasoning due to being shuttled back and forth between the bullpen and starting and between SF and the minors.  If he continues to pitch like he did yesterday, no problem.  He should be in the rotation ahead of Correia and probably ahead of Lowry too.  Zito too, but that's a whole other story.

Addendum
I saw him pitch on TV several times last year.  With the standard disclaimers about the accuracy of speed guns, he was easily sitting 92-94 with occasional spikes to 96 MPH.

Thanks!
So are people thinking he'll be more of a rotation mainstay? Or what's a comp for his ceiling statistical profile would be? Maybe a Ted Lilly or Rich Hill?

Do you think he's ready?

I like Sanchez
He's only 25 and hopefully leaving him alone and letting him start will help his control.  Watched a ST game the other day and he looked good.  His mechanics did look a little different but I'll have to wait to watch a game with Kruk & Kuip who will explain it I'm sure.

DrB - While you're around:  Is EUGENIO VELEZ going to make the team?  Kid looks like a fun player.  Will he start or play UTIF or go to AAA?  Maybe they can dump Ray Durham? (wishful thinking)

Velez
Right now, if I was Kevin Frandsen, I'd be real worried about making the team.  Durham pretty much has the starting 2B job sewn up.  Maybe if he keeps it up, he can be part of a deadline trade?

Bochy has already declared that Kevbo can't play SS.

Velez has outplayed Frandsen so far in ST.

I'm thinking Velez makes the team as the utility guy and Frandsen gets sent down, to reappear only if Durham gets traded or Velez goes in the tank.

DR B
Omar Vizquel is hurt.  He's trying to make it back for the home opener on Apr. 7.  Does this mean that Velez will start at SS?

No
Looks like Brian Bocock is going to hold the fort at SS for the first couple of weeks.  I haven't seen him play, but word is great glove, no bat.

Mishandling
I know that Frandsen hasn't hit well this spring, but I think they really messed with his head.  All winter they told him 2B, then when Vizquel went down and it was over to SS, and now it's back to 2B.  I think it's a pretty raw deal...

Since Durham is going to be the opening day starter, here's hoping he hits the cover off the ball for a couple months and that the Giants have the good sense to move him as soon as they get a decent offer before he gets brought down with some sort of crap leg injury or something.  Finding a team that would take on all of his salary and lead-lined glove would be a real plus too.

Frandsen deserves to play every day.

By the way, who's going to be the backup catcher?  Alfonzo and Rodriguez are hitting .088 and .091 respectively.

Backup Catcher
I think you could flip a coin between Alfonzo and GRod.  GRod gunned down a couple of runners in yesterday's game.  I would think D might be the deciding factor.

I think Bochy was very premature in declaring Frandsen couldn't play SS after a couple of rough games.

Misch Shelled Today
Jonathan Sanchez took another step toward opening the season in the Giants rotation today when Pat Misch, his main competition, allowed 8 ER in 0.1 IP as the Giants lost to the A's 10-2.

Velez got 2 more hits while Frandsen went 1 for 2 with a BB.

Nate Schierholtz probably took another step toward Fresno going   1 for 5.

Jack Taschner continued to pitch well.

Alex Hinshaw had his second successful spring outing with a scoreless IP. More importantly, he did not give up a walk.  It will be interesting to see Where Alex lands this year.  He pitched very well in AA before getting shut down early last year.  If he continues to do well in spring appearances, maybe Fresno?  He's a LHP who throws in the low 90's.

Justin Hedrick, a longtime fave of the Giants Message Board, pitched 2 scoreless innings.  Hedrick has one of the better K/9's in the organization over the last 3 years, but has always tended to give up too many walks.  The Giants have never used him as a starter despite a multipitch repertoire.

Other ST News
Homer Bailey probably sealed his fate today by allowing 6 runs in 3.1 IP.

Todd Linden went 4 for 5 with a double to strengthen his bid to make the A's roster.

Giants
Jonathan Sanchez has indeed been jerked around the past two seasons.  The key for him is control.  When he first came up, he had it and pitched quite well.  He lost it and hasn't pitched consistenly well since.

His ceiling is high, and he could fit right in behind Lincecum and Cain as top-of-the-rotation guys.

The mechanical change he has made is not to drop his hands during his delivery.  The change has simplified his motion, and he has pitched well in his two starts since, likely leaving Patrick Misch in the dust for the temporary #5 spot.

Eugenio Velez was outstanding yesterday, and I hope he got to start at shortstop today in the split-squad game.  I don't expect Eugenio to hit, but he has been a TERROR on the base paths.

Perkin' Merkin Valdez pitched well, not great, today.  Brad Hennessey was excellent in relief of Barry Zito, who has yet to record his first strikeout of the spring (in 12 innings).

At the bargain price of just $126 million, I believe that is an infinite amount per strikeout, even higher than the roughly half million he will be paid for every start he makes as a Giant -- assuming he continues his fine health.

Math
A while back now, I made some very generous calculations and found that Kevin Brown made something like $2,000 per pitch during his contract, though he was hurt for the latter half.

Following the same logic, Zito makes something on the order of $5,000 per pitch.

Wow.  At that kind of money, would you even care what happens to the pitch?  Might as well get shelled every start; Bochy will have to pull him early and the cost/pitch goes even higher if he goes 2.1 innings...

On a lighter note, Chuck Norris divides by zero.

Zito
It looks like the Zito contract could turn out to be one of the worst (if not the worst) contracts in baseball history----I wouldnt be a bit surprised if Sanchez outpitches Zito this year and going forward------for about 20 million less this year!!! At this point, and when looking at this Giants team, as well as their relatively barren farm system (Villalona is at least 3 years away), is there an organization in baseball that's more poorly run-----Sabean must be prepared to take some serious heat this year!!
This is at best a 70 win team----and I'll take the under on that one!! I feel really bad for Lincecum and Cain, and badly for myself since I have both pitchers on my fantasy team-----wins will be VERY hard to come by with that pathetic lineup----ugh!!

Time To Get Serious?
That's a quote from Barry Zito over on the Giants website.  No kidding, Barry?  I mean, he gave up 7 runs in 5 IP yesterday and his ERA went DOWN!  Yes, I know ST stats are meaningless, but does anyone here seriously think the Giants have a ghost of a chance to win on opening day  with Zito facing Brad Penny?

Yes, it was never going to be a good contract, even in the best case scenario, but I could see it surpassing.......darn!  I can't even think of his name now.....the guy who signed with the Rockies a few years ago, Mike Hampton?

BTW...looks like the Rockies learned their lesson well on those deals and are developing their own pitching and it is paying off big time.  What's worse, pitching is the one thing the Giants have shown they can develop.  The Zito signing pretty much negated that advantage in one contract.

by DrBGiantsfan on Mar 16, 2008 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Hampton
Well, he did it because Denver has great schools.  I wonder how their water is...?

At a certain point (and we may be at that point already), it's going to be outright ridiculous and criminal having Zito be the opening day starter simply because he's getting paid the most.  His contract is already a sunk cost and they might as well start putting him in the #5 spot and skipping him as often as they can.  They'll get better pitching out of the other four guys, two of which pitch as well as Chuck Norris roundhouse kicks.
