Josh Anderson - Atlanta

Josh Anderson seems to be making a big splash at Braves camp.   The AJC says he played basketball at Princeton, and I see he had a cup of coffee with Houston last year.  But John doesn't have him in THE book, Baseball Prospectus doesn't have a listing for him, although Shandler has a brief comment.

Can someone fill me in on what to expect from him?  Looks like he might blow right by Schaefer in line to caddy for Kotsay ... and could stick this year instead of Brandon Jones. What's the story on this guy?

Re:
Both Baseball America and Baseball Cube had him at Eastern Kentucky.

Well, you've got one thing right:
He is, in fact, becoming the most likely 4th OF candidate for the Braves. This would likely push Brandon Jones back to Richmond.

But as for the rest of it, well, no.

The only thing I ever read on the AJC website about Anderson and Princeton was that Princeton offered him an academic scholarship and wanted him to come there to play both baseball and basketball. He didn't end up going there.

And he's no "blowing by" anyone. The Braves were never (EVER) going to bring up Schafer to have him "caddy" for Kotsay. If Schafer makes the bigs this year for any extended period of time, it'll be to start most days. So yeah, Anderson is probably going to be the backup CF, but that's got nothing to do with Schafer.

As for what to expect, well, if he played full-time, I'd expect a decent BA coupled with a poor walk rate. He's got elite base stealing ability and he's a strong defender in CF. Oh, he's also got very little power (like 10 HRs in 600 pro games or something like that). Basically, he's a glove guy and a pinch runner who will maybe get 200-300 ABs over the course of the year depending on how often he spells Kotsay and how successful Diaz is in a full-time role in LF.

Scholarships.
Princeton does not offer either academic or athletic scholarships.  The totally of their grants is need-based.  Trust me, I would know.

As for Anderson, I think you have it just about right.  I think he'll be the first pinch runner off the bench.  He'll also be a defensive replacement out in LF late in close games once Diaz's bat is out of the equation.  He'll likely get starts to spell Kotsay in CF and even Diaz in LF every once in a while.

Braves fan since 1995.

ok
technically no.  The Ivy league always likes to say this, however, in actualality they do.  They just don't call them schollys

Don't count him out . . .
Josh Anderson is basically Michael Bourn with 25 less OBP points because of a lesser sense of plate discipline. The only reason he is not the leading candidate for the Houston Astros CF job is that well, they acquired Bourn. Kotsay hasn't exactly been lighting it up and Anderson could start ahead of him if he provides the same style of spark in Atlanta that he did in his cup of coffee in Houston last year. I say that AT WORST he becomes the 4th OF on the Braves this year.

Also, on the scholarships . . . I had a scholarship for football to Princeton (granted this was 1994) that I turned down for an academic scholarship elsewhere. Princeton does effectively offer scholarships, though creative accounting may show that they technically do not.

Except
He's got an arm and he doesn't have Pierre's contact ability. At least not quite.

They're similar but it's not a perfect comp.

Anderson
I was at the Tigers/Braves spring training game in Lakeland on Thursday, and Josh Anderson's defense was one of the most impressive things I saw all game.  He had very good range and instincts out there and robbed several Tigers hitters of what should have been extra bases.

Thanks for the info
My interest comes from playing in a 14 Team NL only auction keeper league.  As you can imagine, you have to make a few choices between 4th (and occasionally 5th) outfielders.  Base thieves are at a premium, so if Anderson could get 250-300 ABs and steal 35 bases, he becomes very valuable in this league. Since we're located in Alaska and no one here is a particular Atlanta fan, it's quite possible he might slip by the radar of some owners, and maybe go at a "sleeper" price.  Sounds like he might be worth a flier on auction day.

don't count on 30+ SBs....
He's a decent $1 gamble I guess, and if you take the time to check the lineups and put him in when he plays, he could be useful.

But the problem with that is that one of his primary roles is going to be pinch runner, so don't be surprised if you miss out on at least a few of his runs/SBs because he pinch ran late in the game.

That's OK ...
Our league is traditional rotisserie, auction-style, 23 players, you get all their stats every day until you trade them or they go inactive, or get sent to the other league.  I figure if I get him for $6 or less, and he does 35 steals, I got a bargain.  The question is, will he actually play enough to get 35 steals.
