Rocco Baldelli - Done?

http://rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&hl=230614&id=3564

What a shame if he has to walk away from the game. Great makeup, skills, but health was always a question. Maybe this makes sense as to the Why aspect of his injuries.

Hope everything is ok with him.

Always was a favorite of mine.

certainly looks that way
something like this would indeed explain, or at least go a long way towards explaining, his injury issues. good luck to him. i know people who have had similar things (at least based on what he said) and it is indeed life threatening/life shortening.

The 8th Skill?
You know, this dovetails a little with something I was thinking about last night, when reading through the 2006 BPB.  (Great fun and highly recommended draft prep, IMO).  Guys like Hermida, Weeks, etc. who just can't seem to stay on the field.

Is there such a thing as the "skill" of staying healthy (or remaining productive while playing hurt)?

probably not a skill
per se. it's often a genetic thing, though you can certainly "train" yourself to do physical activity in a way that decreases the likelihood of injury - that would be a skill aspect.

in baldelli's case, it looks like it's pretty much genetic, considering mitochondrial cytopathies are diseases that are generally genetic.

Sure
In the truest sense.  However, a few points:

-- Speed is not a per se skill, either.

-- I do think there may be something of a learned ability (i.e. "skill") to performing at less than 100% (or even 85%).

Well, I'm sure
That at least in reference to speed being a skill, knowing how to use it is about as important as having it.  Would you praise a player's speed if he's constantly getting caught stealing, picked off, and takes horrible routes to balls?

mitochondrial diseases
definitely genetic--comes from mother's genes

Fixed
Would you praise a player's speed if he's constantly [being Alex Sanchez]?

SBN 3.0 is coming soon... that's what I tell myself at nights...

So sad....
... to see his career possibly end so soon. Hopefully he gets ok and able to play again.
