Spring training prospect tracking

Anybody have any info on how their teams (or any teams) prospects are looking so far in spring training?  Anybody pushing for a starting spot?

Just looking at stats, it looks like Bruce (.571 AVG) and Rasmus (.750 AVG) are making a strong case for opening day jobs.
Maybin has struggled (2-9).
Porcello pitched two prefect innnings.  Struck out Frank Thomas.
Braun is picking up were he left off.
Bailey 2 scoreless.

Longoria
had a walk and an rbi double today.
Marcello on Tim Lincecum's 2008: "Yeah, he only pitched 180 innings last year, who knows if he can handle 200?!?!??"

by realityconquest on Mar 1, 2008 2:08 AM EST reply actions

From what I heard...
he CRUSHED that double and just barely missed a HR.

Day 2
Longoria was 1-1 with a triple and a BB as the DH today.

So far he's had 5 plate appearances, 2 BB's, 1 3B, 1 2B, and an out.

Eddy Martinez-Esteve!
HR today! Now there's a blast from the past!

Merkin Valdez coming off TJ pitched 1 scoreless IP,

Travis Denker had two hits.

Ryan Rohlinger hit a Grand Slam HR.

McGee
Struggled - 4 ER on 3 hits and 3 walks

Word from camp is that Wade Davis looks extremely sharp.  I believe he was perfect in intrasquad games, and was back up in the mid-to-high 90's.  Also worked this offseason on changing the grip on his slider and change, so that the slider puts less stress on his arm and the change gets some circle action.  He fooled the hell out of Carlos Pena on one of the latter in intersquad.  I believe he makes his ST debut tomorrow.

Votto had a hit, a walk and 2 SBs.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

by Brickhaus on Mar 1, 2008 2:34 AM EST reply actions

I believe
McGee was hit by a ball on his leg.  That may have been the cause hor his struggles.

by nyy601 on Mar 1, 2008 2:40 AM EST up reply actions

McGee
I read that it was at the end of the start and he was taken out, so I'm not sure if it affected him.  Did not see the start though, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

by killa on Mar 1, 2008 8:41 AM EST up reply actions

He pitched
after he got hit.  But he didn't record an out at all.  He struggled before and after.  I don't think it affected him.

McGee really struggled in his AA debut too.  He was probably nervous and pressing trying to be perfect.

by Tyler on Mar 1, 2008 11:21 AM EST up reply actions

only faced 1 batter after that
He was getting crushed before that ever happened.

Thanks
all I saw was that he was hit didn't say when.  Do you know if he was still throwing it in the upper 90s?  If his stuff was still there I wouldn't be too concerned.

by nyy601 on Mar 1, 2008 2:09 PM EST up reply actions

No radars
But 2 or 3 people saw him on the Rays board.  They said his fastball was blazing.  He didn't command it at all and couldn't locate his off-speed stuff.  Nothing wrong with his arm.

by Tyler on Mar 1, 2008 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

easy chicken little
you do realize this was his first appearance of SPRING TRAINING! a lot of pitchers don't have their "stuff" yet and it's not a cause for concern - there not expected to at this point

by Wheelhouse on Mar 1, 2008 3:30 PM EST up reply actions

Porcello?
Am I the only one shocked to see a high school kid in MLB camp? Was it part of his contract to be invited?
Paul Householder, Gary Redus, Tommy Lawless, Duane Walker ... prospects rawk!

by design28 on Mar 1, 2008 11:29 AM EST reply actions

ML Contract
if you're on the 40 man, you're required to be in big league camp.

by Tyler on Mar 1, 2008 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

Response
High profile draftees often receive an invite to major league spring training prior to their first full season, even when they're drafted out of high school.

Of course, they're usually among the first to be sent down.

I'm just amazed ...
... they'd put him in a live game at all! Wow ...

To me there are (seemingly) no good results of him getting any significant playing time right now:

 - If he does REALLY well, it increases the temptation to speed up his track to DET ...

 - if he gets smoked, his confidence takes a hit ....

Maybe the guy is special enough not to be effected, but even if he HAS to be in camp, does that mean he has to pitch in games? Maybe so, but that just sent shivers down my spine when I saw his name in a boxscore ...

Paul Householder, Gary Redus, Tommy Lawless, Duane Walker ... prospects rawk!

He was
the top HS pitcher to come out in a long time.  He pitched great.  Faced the middle of the Jays lineup (Rios, Wells, and Thomas) and pretty much dominated.  That's amazing when you consider that he is just a teenager.

by nyy601 on Mar 1, 2008 2:56 PM EST up reply actions

As was said above,
it's really not uncommon for a team to bring their very young top prospects to the Major League camp. Both they and the team know that they won't make the team in all but rare cases, but the team just wants them to see what Major League competition is like. They usually start ST in the big league camp and get cut and have to go to the Minor League camp later in March.

Jaime Garcia
jaime garcia looked pretty good yesterday for the cardinals.  he went 2 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts.  he touched 94 with his fastball and showed a pretty good curve.

by fewgoodcards on Mar 1, 2008 1:25 PM EST reply actions

if he's hitting 94 look out
Could be very good soon if that's the case.

John Niese 2 IP 0 H 3 K's.  John still likes this kid and he could be a good one.

by Bravesin07 on Mar 1, 2008 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

niese looked very good
his changeup was a plus pitch today....used it as his K pitch on at least one occasion......they also had an interview with him during the broadcast and he came off very humble and focused

by Wheelhouse on Mar 1, 2008 3:45 PM EST up reply actions

more cardinals pitchers
adam ottavino and tyler herron weren't quite as good as garcia today.

ottavino 2 innings, 0 hits, 2 runs, 0 earned, 2 walks, 1 strikeout

herron 1.1 innings, 1 hit, 1 run, 0 earned, 0 walks, 0 strikeouts

Maybin's 2 hits...
....were XBH. that's the argument against him is it not? i think he's doing fine... 2/9 is hardly struggling

LaPorta
another hit...and a SB...so far....

Greinke looking good too... no hits, though a couple BB... guess his line will be similar to my other main man Homer

Greinke
Taken deep by another prospect - Chris Davis...

by Dfarth on Mar 1, 2008 4:31 PM EST up reply actions

damn
Davis sure does hit a lot of homers.

no
He took Matt Peterson deep, not Zack.

My Bad
I saw that it was a 3R Homer and that Greinke gave up 3ER and just assumed.  I guess Greinke gave up a run in the third and then Peterson came in with two on and Davis took him out - or something close to that...

Michael Aubrey is staying healthy so far and
has been driving the ball to the tune of .714 (5 for 7, I believe) with 2 2Bs (at least one the opposite way that nearly went for a HR against Detroit on Sunday) and 3 RBIs.

If he could stay healthy (big IF, I know,) he could add an interesting bat to the Indians' farm system.  He could spend a month or two at AA Akron before heading up to AAA Buffalo, but I think there's a decent chance he could start at AAA Buffalo to begin 2008, especially if he continues to do well in ST.  He and OF/1B Jordan Brown could share 1B, with Brown moving to LF on the days that Aubrey is playing at 1B, and Aubrey could DH or sit out on days Brown is at 1B, just to try to make sure Aubrey stays healthy.

I think (though I could be wrong,) this is the final year Aubrey can be optioned to the Minors, so this is obviously a very big year for Aubrey.  Hopefully, he can stay healthy and show why the Indians took him 11th in the 2003 Draft.

Just my 2 cents.  :-)

Take care and have a great day!

Trevor Crowe is batting .500 to this point!
Hello everyone,

Another player from Indians' camp that is off to a good start is OF Trevor Crowe, who's batting .500 after going 1-4 against the Blue Jays on Monday.

Obviously, this is a big year for Crowe, though to his credit, after hitting .192 through June 26 of last season, he hit .323 after that point, but if he can put up a solid to very good year in AAA, he'll likely factor into the Indians' plans, even as early as the second half of this season.  Many in the Indians' organization think he's poised for a strong bounceback year.

You can read more information about Crowe here.

Take care and have a great day!
