Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Whither the CP

I'm pretty disappointed at the community's lack of commitment, and the apparent ballot stuffing earlier, of the CP list.  Honestly, it was one of my favorite diaries last year.  This year, it seemed to degrade into a mess-between bickering, ballot stuffing, and then a waning of interest.
I'm pretty disappointed that it seems this site can't even limp it's way to a finish at 75.  What happened to this community?  Did we really let a couple of Joba's end us?  I've been thinking this for a while, and I know some of the people have bowed out out of disgust/boredom.  However, I really think that the CP was a signature of the good voices here.  I hope, if nothing else, that we can resurrect this for next year.  I would be in favor of running a true list (I'm not much of a poster, and don't have the time) of starting a new list, or scrapping this one.  The current 67-68 doesn't represent this community, and even as an infrequent contributor, I'm embarassed by it.
Again, I'm not a big voice here; but, I'm embarassed by the complete meltdown.  You guys (I've read your posts for years) and us new guys should be capable of something better, something worthwhile, to contribute positively to this site.
So, that's my 2 cents, I am not a ballot stuffer, I am not an original member, I am just disappinted. Edit: Whence changed to Whither, thanks jpahk

and there's the problem...
I'll agree with you in that it's odd the CP list has slowed down, but saying your "embarrassed" by the list, and "the current 67-68 doesn't represent this community", is exactly what caused the problems initially.  Prospect lists are a subjective task, and in a community such as this, with literally hundreds of different opinions on prospecting, even more so than most lists.  Yet, when prospect A gets rated 47th instead of 48th (or gasp - 49th!), the reaction is similar to someone watching their family dog of 15 years, Chuck, get run over by an 18-wheeler.  In my opinion, THAT, is what ruined this years CP List.  Having a strong opinion is one thing, citing "homerism" and such, killed CPL.

Indeed
for some reason people can't handle things not going exactly their way.

the manual voting
killed it for me.  It stopped discussions of players, and made it impossble to go in the thread unless you were willing to dedicate 30 minutes there.

The list has always been a waste of space
the majority of people vote for their favs and fantasy team guys, plain and simple......it's absolutely useless.......people don't like to hear it, but it's the truth

I'm disappointed as well...
the problem is there's no way to restore the integrity of the list. If we had a poll that was limited to registered users, then I think we could restart it, but as it is you either have open polling, which was more abused this year than ever, or you have manual voting, which as Galt points out actually destroys debate and discussion.

So, in the end, I'm disappointed because it was one of my favorite things to do on the site, but I have no solutions. I thought the manual vote would solve some of the issues, but it did destroy debate. So I'm stumped as to how to revive the list.

I did like the diaries where you'd rank a single prospect from 1-10, but I imagine it was labor intense. Not only that, but the more obscure prospect diaries would lie dormant because there wasn't enough opinion to start discussions.

Anyway, it was a good run while it lasted, but as the site got more popular, it changed into something that is less interesting to me.

"whence"
"whence" means "from where." i think you mean "whither the CP."

and, yeah. it sucks that the CP list got broken by unknown morons and that we haven't figured out a decent way of fixing it. i miss it too.

It's a shame...
that we wont make it to 100 like we did last year.  It looks like we'll have trouble making it to 75.  Mound Talk did a community poll and did make it to 100 and ended up w a pretty good list.  Actually, I think our list is better.
