Jose Tabata's Wrist

Has anyone heard any updates concerning Tabata's wrist? If his wrist problems turn out to be chronic he obviously will lose a lot of value. If not, I believe he will be a Yankee prospect who lives up to the hype.

he's done if chronic
if fixed, he's the next Bobby Abreu.

wow
You're saying he's going to hit .300/.400/.500 with 25+ stolen bases a year? At the absolute very best possible outcome, maybe, however I think the chances of him reaching that level are quite low.

SB's
Based on scouting reports, the 25 steals could be hard to come by.  Tabata seems to be filling out and losing some of his speed... As for the rest of the Abreu comparison, I don't know that Tabata will ever walk as much as Abreu, but I doubt he'll ever strike out as much either.  The resulting OPS could be similar, if Tabata develops the sort of contact ability he's purported to have.  It'll just be a BA-driven (and in my opinion, more valuable) OBP.

well
being a right handed hitter will hurt him a bit, espcially if he makes it as a Yankee.

He would be a killer if he was on the Red Sox / Astro though.

Not sure if he's grown a bit more, but in the future's game he looked pretty small, smaller than Melky Cabrera . I'm sure he'll fill up, but growning one or two more inches would help.

chronic?
what? who's got chronic?

by daveh33 on Feb 7, 2008 4:49 PM EST reply actions

Chronic?
Tabata does, apparently.  He's going to have trouble with drug testing in the future, that's my guess.

yeah
any reports on him and Jeffress hanging out? specifically on late-night 7-11 trips?

And I heard...
he actually organized the cockfight that Pedro and Marichal were involved in. Tabata's a bad man... a bad man...

Chronic?
He'll be fine.  Just have to lay off it in the minors.  They don't test for it in the show.  Well, they do, teams do, but they can't do anything about it.  You can fail weed tests as many times as you choose once you're in the show as long as you don't get arrested for it and enter the drug program, there is nothing you can do about it.

I'm pretty sure he's referring to Tabata's wrist problem being a result of being on the gas.  Maybe that would also explain his rapidly thickening physique?

I think I've been fairly clear in prior posts that I'm a very strong advocate of testing, and that I have no problems talking about a player's suspected use.  However, I think it is not very fair to make this sort of accusation about Tabata. It'd be similar to mentioning steroids in connection to every position player who needs TJ, or has a patellar problem, or plantar fasciitis.  Yes, where there's smoke, there's often fire. However, we do have to give the benefit of the doubt, at least initially.

Ok, I probably misread the intent of the post...
...just goes to show where my mind is.  So, please strike that last comment from the record.  But, "wrist injury" + "testing" = PED's in my mind.

Sorry. :)

no, i think its official :-)
Jose Tabata is suspected of being a pothead. go run tell all yankee and minor league bloggers out there. just don't forget who broke this story! daveh33 of John Sickels' minor league ball community

lol
I saw Lunkwill's post, and the testing comment... that's what set me off into rantsville.

And please! I'm a Mets fan.  We are THE stoner team.  Just ask any of the 01 Mets.  Or Grant Roberts.

Joke
I was just following up on the chronic joke.  Also:  Mark Dewey wants to meet you in the parking lot.

Eh
How old is he, 19?  He has done quite well and I'm glad that Yankees didn't rush him like what Mets did to F-Mart and are quite cautious with his progress (at least they did learn something out of the whole Wily Mo Pena saga).  I do think that he'll increase power with a fixed wrist and he's gaining age too.  If he does well in Double A, he could be one of the tops in minors by the end of 2008 Season

by bmxstreetrider86 on Feb 7, 2008 5:30 PM EST reply actions

He'll be fine. I'm guessing he's #1
On the prospect list next year.  I expect a big year from him.

If we don't get it, then we worry.
