Shoulder Problem for Price?

David Price was scratched from his scheduled appearance Tuesday because of shoulder soreness.

Along with Scott Kazmir's elbow problems it was a bad day for the Rays' southpaw phenoms, but Price indicated afterward that the injury isn't serious. "I'll be all right," Price said. "It was just stiffness really, not sharp pain or anything. I couldn't really get it loose when I was in the pen, so I just said, 'Don't worry about it.'"

Maddon says it's nothing
I know that's what they always say, but he's not going to miss anytime.

Kaz is also supposed to miss 2 weeks.  MRI, as expected showed no injury to the elbow ligament.

if it was 'nothing'...
then why miss 2 weeks? had to be some inflammation, right?

Inflamation
isn't the same as "injury"

I'd let him rest for a few weeks also.

I think they called it...
"stuffiness" in the article I just read.

Ladies and gentlemen
Meet the new Prior and Wood.

If I had a nickel for everytime I heard "it's nothing" concerning those two, I'd be Bill Gates.

You'd have a lot of nickles
from Kazmir and very few from Price.  Price hasn't ever been hurt.  Kazmir has been shut down once, the team maintained it was precautionary and the next season (despite someone on this site, don't remember who, saying that there was no way he'd pitch half a season) he threw 200+ innings.

Neither have ever had a serious injury, and the Rays training staff is one of the best in the buisness.  Name the last time a prospect in the Rays organization went down with a shoulder or elbow injury that were serious??  There are 3 that I can think of.  2 came from Rice and were hurt before they got here and one (Chuck Tiffany) threw 4 games and sucked in them all, so you can pretty much assume it was pre-existing.  Other than that, none have been hurt.  They've been remarkably good at keeping their players healthy.

lung
What about Seth McClung? Waechter? Matt White? Maybe Switzer?

True
I was thinking recently though.  The entire training staff was reworked a couple years ago.  Porterfield is the man!

first
let me say I wasn't at all serious about that.  It was more joke than anything else, but....

Prior was a model of health out of USC and had supposed "perfect" mechanics, so never say never when talking about Price or any young pitcher for that matter.

What about Victor Zambrano?

Price vs. Weiters
I've been saying it for a while... now maybe someone will listen to me and start taking Weiters before Price...

I have to agree. For me the bats always seem like a safer bet then the arms.

I really hope they are both ok. But if they are the next Wood and Prior who will step up and fill the role of Zambrano?

I agree...
I have the 6th pick in my MiLB draft coming up, and I've thought about taking Wieters.

From Tampa Bay Online...
"Price's situation didn't cause nearly as much concern. The 22-year-old's shoulder felt a bit stiff when he was warming up after sitting around for the early innings of the game, and the Rays told him not to take any chances. With two scheduled pitchers scratched, the game was shortened from seven innings to six.

Maddon said Price was "fine" and there was no reason to worry. He wasn't sure if the pitcher's workload would be adjusted, but said it would be discussed today."

price
there was concerns with his pitch count leading up to the draft, at least from us rays fans.

it was probably just hoping they would be overly cautious with him, but if he's a little tired and overused, i wouldn't be too surprised.

Take this for what its worth.
The Rays are very cautious with their pitchers, and have a very good track record of keeping Kazmir healthy.

No. They're not bullet proof. But remember the Mets traded Kazmir, in part, because they thought he'd never stay healthy. The Rays have been very good about shutting him down when he has minor twinges or fatigue. They've been good about keeping his workload in check. The result, I think, is that he hasn't had to alter his mechanics to compensate for pain or fatigue, which has kept his arm fairly health.

Also
It sounds like Price might just have been a little fatugued and he might have stiffened up a bit. Not unexpected given the fact that its still spring training. They probably just need to work him into shape a little slower given his long layoff.

yeah
there's no relation whatsoever between the two. entirely separate matters....

Apparently
Apparently, on this particular day at least, the Price wasn't right.

Not worried
I'm not saying its absolutely nothing, but Price is one of the guys I'm not worried about blowing out his shoulder.  Mechanically he's pretty solid in my opinion.

A pumped up kid that came out of the gates a little fast in ST and got sore if I had to take a stab at a cause.

He threw
an 8 minute bullpen session today.  Everything felt normal.  He'll be pitching in live games by next week.

The inflammation in Kazmir's arm is gone.  He should be throwing in the bullpen within the week.

by Tyler on Mar 3, 2008 8:27 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Update
Kazmir's inflammation in the elbow is gone and he's now throwing a sock.  If the "sock drill" goes well, he should be back throwing on the side in 2-3 days.

Price is fine, he's throwing in the bullpen today and will pitch Saturday against the Yankee's.
