cardinals
rasmus is obvious, but i also can't wait to see what jaime garcia does this year.  i want to see if his elbow is healthy, and i want to see if he can get his control back to where it was 2 years ago.  if this guy is healthy, i think he is going to dominate.

i also want to see what clayton mortensen can do this year.  he is getting some serious hype from the st. louis media and dave duncan, and john manuel said today in a chat that he thinks he is the best starting prospect in the cardinals system.  he's probably going to start out in AA, and i want to see  if he can live up to the early hype.

Tigers
From the Tigers:

Rick Porcello - for obvious reasons.

Brandon Hamilton - 2 plus pitches & projectible frame; needs control.

Cale Iorg - all the tools to be an above average ML shortstop; needs to shake off rust from 2 year layoff.

Charlie Furbush - hard throwing lefty did well in his low-A pro debut.

Audy Ciriaco - all the tools; no production.

Wilkin Ramirez - see Ciriaco, Audy.

Dont forget....
....

Reynoso - Seeing how his Dominican League numbers can transfer to the low minors.

Eddie Bonine - Throws ~90 with the fastball, mixes in hard knuckleball and a slow knuckleball. Adds good command. I'll have to get to Toledo to see one of his starts this year.

Macay McBride - Tigers trying to see if he can turn back to a starter in AAA. What will that bring?

Chris Lambert - Flamed out for the Cards. Can the Tigers turn him around?

James Skelton
I'm a big James Skelton fan.  I want to see how he fares against better competition.

Just a few
Jordan Shafer and Jason Heyward

Justin Masterson and especially Lars Anderson as he should be in AA part of the year and I will be able to get to see him

Schafer
Did OK today in his ST debut. He went 0-1 at the plate with an RBI and a K but played strong defense.

big names bore me
I like following the middle range guys, esp great collegians or guys I saw early before they were hyped.

Some of my favories
Mike Broadway
Nick Barnese
Josh Horton
Daniel Bard
Mitch Boggs
Heath Rollins
Alex Wilson (not yet drafted)

by nms on Feb 27, 2008 6:15 PM EST reply actions

who?
who is Mike Broadway? I can guarantee you with absolute certainty he is no where near the "middle" when it comes to prospects and I also would venture to say that his name is Michael, but you just think you are cool enough to give the guy a nickname like you know him, which I hope you do because no one else does

Definately
Vitters with all the debate that was generated over his HS numbers and the egg he laid in his debut.

Price/Moose/Heyward/Marerro

Tabata - will power show up?
Geo Soto - # spike a fluke or not
Alderson - candidate to pull a Joba-jump in status IMO
Blackburn - gotta see what all the BA man love is about

Angel Villalona!
I think just about every serious Giants fan is waiting with bated breath to see what Big V does in full season ball.

Bumgarner and Alderson would be second choices, but Angel V is the man right now.

oh
Danny Ray Herrera.

The odds are long, but you gotta root for him

by nms on Feb 27, 2008 8:49 PM EST reply actions

This is kind of a great thread
Pulling in names from Longoria to Mitch Boggs to Danny Ray Herrera.  Nice to see what rocks that people have bookmarked under.

I really want to see if Richie Gardner can make it to the majors.  Reds minor league pitcher of the year in 2004, career sidetracked after that, now 25 or 26....he'll have gone thru a lot of hell and high water if he ever sets foot on an ML diamond.

Keep an eye on..
I can't wait to see the following perform.

Oscar Tejada
Julio Teheran (no one even mentioned him)
Billy Rowell
Truinfel
Gorkys Hernandez

I'm curious to see how Maybin responds to the trade. I think he will come out blazing.

The Reds are finally making a move!

There are a few I'm pretty interested in...
Sosa, interested to see if he can step it forward, his stat/stuff combination was pretty impressive, even if he slid some in A+.

Rohrbough, his numbers are hard to beat, and I'd like to see if the stories of velocity gain based on arm slot are real. If he can keep a low-mid 90s FB, then he could be elite.

Vitters, I'm real curious about Vitters. People are down on him cause of his stats, but scouts still love him. BP even said people compared his bat to vlad's. So I can't wait to see if his poor HS and rookie ball stats really mean anything.

Heyward, I'm interested to see if the Braves got as big of a steal as people seem to believe.

Soto, I've been examining the predictive role of BABIP all year, and this guy is a good position to put it to the test. His BABIP was really high last year, which should mean a fair amount of regression this year. Bruce is also someone who, based on BABIP analysis, was playing above his head.

De Los Santos, I've been a big fan of his since last summer, so I'll be interested to see if he emerges as a top 10 prospect, as I suspect.

Ryan Khalish, OF, Boston
Excited to see what he can do. Last two Lowell players I was this excited about were Anabal Sanchez and Hanely Ramirez.

My Guys
These are my favourites, mostly because there seems to be even less certainty about their future paths than with other prospects.

Kyle Blanks
Jonathon Sanchez
Dexter Fowler
Andrus/Tabata/FMart/Triunfel
Carlos Carrasco
Nick Blackburn (mostly to see if the BA hype is justified)

by Mario66 on Feb 28, 2008 11:41 AM EST reply actions

Guys I've made roster bets on:
Wilson Ramos*
Allen Craig
Peter Bourjos*
Drew Miller
RJ Seidel
Fabio Castillo
Jose Martinez (ChiWS OF)
Will Middlebrooks
Nick Weglarz*
Wilmer Flores
Arnold Leon
Brent Brewer
Kelvin DeLeon*
Jeff Locke*
Andrew Bailey*
Pedroz Baez
Reynaldo Navarro

(*) = (These are guys I think make the jump to top 50 type prospects)

by gogotabata on Feb 28, 2008 7:21 PM EST reply actions

Bailey
The guy doesn't get a lot of attention, but he is my favorite "under the radar" pitcher on the A's to make an impact within the next couple years. Big time sleeper IMO.

by JPShark25 on Feb 29, 2008 2:44 AM EST up reply actions

James McDonald
This guy's numbers were great last season especially after moving up to AA.  It seems as if Keith Law and John are the only two to fully appreciate his season last year.  Interested to see if he can do it again in 2008 or if it was a fluke.
