Carlos Triunfel's Ceiling

While looking through the numerous fantasy baseball magazines at my local Barnes & Noble, I came across a magazine called Scout.

It dealt purely with prospect reports.  It's a pretty good magazine, although I didn't find out a whole lot of new information on any prospects.

They also have a top 300 list, which is a mess.

They are really high on Carlos Triunfel and describe him as somebody with Miguel Cabrera like potential.  They envision him hitting 30-40 homers a year.

My question to you guys is, is this an accurate forecast?  It seems to me that every report I read on Triunfel is different.

I'm having a hard time gauging him.

The magazine also describes Villalona as a potential 40-40 player.  I thought that was off.  At least on the 40 stolen bases.

not gonna develope 20 HR pop
I see a Joe Randa or Placido Polanco type.

it's easy
those are the only two players left in the history of baseball that he hasn't compared a prospect to......had to fit them in somewhere

If he wants to call Polanco the floor,
that's fine. But Polanco definitely does not share Triunfel's body type, skill set or raw batting ability. A better comp for the floor would be Adrian Beltre: they share all of the above and Beltre overall has been a disappointment.

Love to see what
you think Fernando Martinez is going to develop into since he has shown the same lack of power that Triunfel has.

Triunfel's has a special bat, and yes his ceiling is Miguel Cabrera, but there is still a huge gap between what he is and what he could become

triunfel is only 5'11
Cabrera was already 6'2 when he signed and that is a big difference IMO.  Tejada w/o roids is triunfel's ceiling.

You're judging him solely upon height? Lol.

by redwolf75 on Feb 27, 2008 9:08 PM EST up reply actions

Well
it does matter.
1941 .406

by FrozenTed9 on Feb 27, 2008 9:11 PM EST up reply actions

not really
find me his bench press numbers and that would matter.  The fact that he is 5'11 does not mean he won't hit for power.  But I guess since he is so "small" all the talk about him outgrowing SS is BS.

by nyy601 on Feb 27, 2008 9:25 PM EST up reply actions

I never said it didn't matter.
The ONLY thing braves cited was his height, which is an obvious fallacy, as elrey capably outlines below.

by redwolf75 on Feb 27, 2008 10:09 PM EST up reply actions

It may matter when you're below 5-foot-10,
as most players of that height don't hit for power, but many, many of the best power hitters of all time were under 6-foot, and there are countless more hitters of that height range have been prospects with tons of raw power ability.

And Triunfel isn't done growing either. Of all the concerns, height isn't one of them.

You must be new
you'll learn all about Braves.  Just do a search for Carlos Gomez and you will learn quickly.

So was Willie Mays.
And Mickey Mantle.
And Harmon Killebrew.

Hank Aaron, Manny Ramirez and Ernie Banks were 6 foot.

Just off the top of my head.

My favorite example:
Mel Ott - 5'9" - 511 HR

And I had no idea Mickey Mantle was 5' 11"

This is difficult
He is so young, and really has not shown much yet. I have heard some Miguel Tejada offensive comparisons, but Tejada was a damn good offensive SS

Really is Very High
I am not sure If he will stay at shortstop, but his bat will keep him in the lineup somewhere.

But Trust me, I am shocked he is not getting a ton of interest and Pub from other scouts.

He has monumental potential

The Twins WILL compete in 2008!!!

Miguel Cabrera would be the very best
Triunfel can be, so it's not very likely. He's described as a perennial All-Star ability by scouts, and knowing how scouts are very conservative, that's really high praise. Perennial 30 homer years are likely if he pans out, and last year he showed a ton of contact ability with how fast his bat speed is, which is excellent for his age.

I like to imagine Triunfel as the Gary Sheffield type, but probably without so much plate patience and a little less athleticism.

He could develop a lot of ways.
If you are talking purely about his ceiling, scouts seem to think that he could be an elite, Cabrera-like hitter. Everything would need to go right for that to happen though.

Most places when ranking him take into account the fact that its unlikely he will reach that ceiling. Its more likely that he wont develop nearly that much power.

As far as Villalona goes, Ive never heard anyone talk about him as a 40-40 guy. Ive heard lots of positive things about his power, but I dont think he has the speed to come anywhere near 40 steals.

hmmm
triunfel's ceiling is not miggy cab's. if everything goes right it might be a tejada, but even that is on the high side. the one you keep hearing about is renteria.

i've only heard one other person describe villalona's ceiling as a 40-40, and that was villalona's agent about 2yrs ago. i remember reading it online in some newspaper. that said i would not expect more than 1 or 2 sb a yr from villalona. 5 would make me pleasantly surprised, 10 would be winning the lottery.

I wrote this about a Tejada comp
for Triunfel a couple weeks back, and it applies here too. (Although that post was not in response to you.)

Well I invision
him to be compared more along the lines of Han-Ram (Hanley Ramirez)

obviously not as good as SB potential as Hanley has, though.

The Twins WILL compete in 2008!!!
