Pedro Alvarez

Potential #1 overall draft pick, Vandy 3B Pedro Alvarez missed some games over the weekend with wrist pain.  Well, it turns out he has a fracture in the wrist.  BA writeup doesn't say which wrist or which bone.  Aren't these usually hamates?

I don't think usually hamates....
but there is a chance it is the hamate. Either way, I would say there's a good chance his season might be over. Or at least a good majority of it is.

Rotoworld
Says at least 6 weeks, might drop his stock enough to make the Rays' decision a little easier.

Brignac
Thought I'd just throw this here, instead of a whole new thread-

Rotoworld reports the Brignac has a hairline fracture in his foot (5th toe), expected to resume playing in about 1 week.

I wonder how far this would drop him
I wonder if we could have a Laporta-esque situation if Alvarez doesn't play much this season.  Boras+large bonus demands+injury-riddled junior year=precipitous drop down the draft board?  Maybe even to the Yanks at 28?

If he does drop precipitously
to small market team, you can bet Boras will advise him to return for his senior year in the hopes of being a top 3 pick in 2009.

I say if he even takes a small drop to 5 this year, the Giants should pounce.  They can afford the price tag since many gaudy ML contracts are expiring, are in no big rush to contend, and can wait for the wrist to fully recover.  The teams picking early cannot risk letting him fall to the Drooling Evils Lurking in the Depths (Tigers, Yankees, Mets, Red Sox) who will send a Brinks truck to his house if he is drafted.

If he falls to the Giants, I think they need to draft him. With Angel V moving to 1B, they can use a 3B prospect. In two or three years you could have Angel V and Alvarez manning the corners with Cain and Lincecum as your 1 and 2 pitchers. Of course, that's in a perfect world without injuries or busted prospects.

And am I the only one who thinks it's funny that the Tigers are now considered to be on par with Boston and New York? Sure they spend money, but isn't this a team that lost 100 games just like 4 years ago? They had to spend money to get free agents to come to them. But still, most of their pitchers are home grown.

Homegrown?
I see Verlander as the only starter that the Tigers drafted, and Zumaya & Rodney as the only relievers (and Rodney was an amateur free agent).  Everyone else was either acquired in a trade or as a free agent.

Bonderman
They developed Bonderman.

They traded a SP that they drafted and developed for a kid who pitched one season in the Oakland system.  Bonderman's entire development as a professional to this point and forward lay on the shoulders of the Detroit coaching staffs.

He will almost certainly go pro this year
LaPorta situations are very rare, and Alvarez is/was much more highley regarded than LaPorta was before their Jr seasons (despite LaPortas great soph year).

Wrist injuries can be a beech for hitters, esp power hitters, but I really doubt Boras wants to risk sending Alvarez back for a senior year.  He will almost certainly, even with the injury this year, get a higher offer this year than next.

alvarez
pedro could miss the entire season and still be a top 2 pick, he is that good.  everybody knows the guy can hit, he doesn't have to prove it this spring.

He is not going to fall too far.

Now, maybe is Smoak has an awesome season, he moves ahead of Alvarez. Still, he doesn't make it out of the top 5.

Over paying the slot
He could fall till he reaches a team willing to overpay the slot.  Boras won't want him to, but, he could use the threat of returning for his senior year to strong arm teams into paying him obscene cash with a threat of not signing and leaving the team who picks him with nothing.  When this happens, players slide.(see Porcello)to the depths of the big spenders.  Yes the Tigers have been big spenders in the draft, over paying for Maybin, Miller, and Porcello

won't happen
Most teams realize that the slot bonuses are garbage. They also know Alvarez has a chance to be a generational type player...he won't make it past #5.

BA has an article saying it's a hamate bone injury
Says with the rules in place to protect college athletes and Boras advising him, chances are slim they release exactly what is wrong but scouts who saw him believe it's a hamate injury.  Take that for what you want.
