That was good

The only thing I would have done differently is to drive him to the airport and possibly get him to board the plane before informing him of the truth. But, it's a good prank.

Why stop there

I say fly him to Japan and have a jersey with his name on it waiting at the ballpark - then tell him it's a prank...

Make him play for like ten years or so, convince him to get a moderate command of the language, have him marry a young Japanese woman who works in the investment sector of Tokyo (so they don't see each too, too often, but they end up having a son and a daughter, both of whom they love pretty much, except the son has an attitude problem lately), then after he retires and buys a couple of Yamaha dealerships, tell him it was a prank. The look on his face...
