Position Premium

Got offered Mauer for Tex and Bruce in one of my 5x5 leagues. I understand that certain positions (C,MI) carry a certain premium, but as good as he is, Mauer will never put up the run production of a Tex (or Bruce imo)....

Do you guys believe there should be a premium for positions, or is just better to field the best lineup regardless of position? I am in the latter obviously. If there is a premium, when is enough enough? PS, I wouldn't do that deal in a million years.

I think you said it all
Definately not a trade to make.  I do not even think in a keeper league I would trade Bruce for Mauer straight up if I planned on staying for some time.  Tex for him is a go for the position premium you speak of.

CA is a tough position but last year I managed 2nd in one league and 1st in the other with this catcher and that catcher.  I think I had Jason Kendall, Greg Zaun and Carlos Ruiz come in and out of my lineup.  I think the catcher premium is quite a bit overrated.  A smart, active player can find an adequate catcher.

I agree
The Catcher position premium is overrated.  The game comes down to numbers in the end.  When someone else takes Joe Mauer, you could be taking a Francouer-type, who will put up better numbers (except AVG in this case) across the board.  I also think this year's catcher crop seems a bit deeper, with guys like Towles being available late.

Also
Forgot to answer your specific question- I would not do that trade.  Maybe if Russell Martin or Vic Martinez gets involved, I'd do one of the 2 guys you have, but still not both.  Mauer should have a nice average, but he has yet to prove he can provide above average numbers in the other categories, and is a health risk.

This year...
I see 1B as one of the most shallow positions.  You have your top teir (Howard, Tex, Pujols, Fielder and Ortiz).  I like Hafner and Berkman, but they will be high draft picks relative to their production.  That said, I think it is wise to hold onto 1B this year.

hmmm
i can't say that i would reject a trade like this in all situations. it really depends on how deep/shallow your league is and how deep your lineup is.
for example if you had 1B and OF with great depth, while you had a really bad C then the deal might not be out of the question. However it's unlikely for a scenerio like that.

Similar Dilema
Hey Guys,
I'm in a 12 team keeper league and have the first pick in the upcoming minor league draft. The league is a 6x6 with OPS and Holds being added to the traditional 5x5. We can keep 12 players and my current roster is...

C V-mart
1 Howard
2 Weeks
3 Wright
SS Reyes
OF Holliday
OF Abreu
OF D. Young
DH A-Rod
Bench/OF J. Upton

SP Santana
SP Sheets
SP Lilly
RP Wagner

I need to rebuild my minor league roster after trading most of it away to get Santana.

Should I take David Price or Matt Wieters? Price would probably help my team more, but is Wieters' value high enough to merit picking him?

I'd appreciate any input.

Price or Wieters?
I am happy to have both of them on my minor league roster.  Which do I think is more valuable?  I'd say Wieters by a slim margin, but I don't know if I'd draft him first if I were you.  They're both with crappy organizations (yeah TB has good prospects, which SHOULD translate to a good team, but I'll believe it when I see it on a major league level).  And I do believe positional players (even catchers) are safer than pitchers.  But you already have a top catcher, and there's no point to having two.  You can have excess pitchers, and Sheets and Lilly are not total studs for their positions like VMart is.  Of course, there's no guarantee he'll stay at catcher, but I'd guess he'll still be their catcher the next 2-3 years, and Wieters should be ready  by 2009 or 2010.  I think in YOUR case, the pitcher is the safer bet.

mauer for tex and bruce
Mauer for Teixeira alone I would consider.  Not necessarily, do it, but at least consider it.

If it's a keeper league, Mauer for Bruce I would consider.  Probably do it, but I'd think about it awhile.

Mauer for BOTH Teixeira and Bruce?  I have a real hard time imagining any scenario in which this would be a good deal for you.

hmmm
two replies.
1).  in defense of my statement. scenerio where it might be worth it is if you have more than 1 catcher slot and few OF slots. i know it's unlikely, but hey i'm sure there are some leagues out there that might have it.

2). so wieters would replace v-mart, or price replace lily? price replays lily is the one to go. unless of course you think v-mart wont last more than 1 more season with C eligibility in which case I'd take wieters because 12 team league means there's some quality pitching avaliable for pickups.
