Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Poreda/Lofgren/Rowell

I posted this on Athleticsnation earlier, but am hoping for some more input.

I have three guys here for two spots.

Star-divide

We get eight minor league spots, and I have narrowed down the guys that could be axed to three:

Aaron Poreda, SP, CHW
Chuck Lofgren, SP, CLE
Billy Rowell, 3B, BAL

In case you were curious, my other minor leaguers are:

Jacoby Ellsbury, CF, BOS (moved to majors roster)
Ian Kennedy, SP, NYY (moved to majors roster)

Andrew McCutchen, CF, PIT
Michael Burgess, RF, WAS
Todd Frazier, SS, CIN (yes, he is listed at SS)

Trevor Cahill, SP, OAK
Johnny Cueto, SP, CIN (but as an A's fan, I'm hoping we can get him in a Blanton deal)
Jake McGee, SP, TB

My concerns:
Poreda: Has no second pitch, and people say he lacks control. Could end up as a reliever.

Lofgren: 2007 was a down year.

Rowell: Yes, he's been young for his levels (young for his high school grade level too), but 12 home runs and 163 k's in 547 minor league at-bats to date kinda worry me for someone with "plus" power.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Lofgren
I just don't think he has the ceiling that Rowell has and I think Poreda is worth hanging onto for a while.

not high on either eh?
there are a ton of guys out there still...chris davis might be a good replacement for rowell IMO, he's listed at 3b in our league

oh...
My apologies, I meant those were the two I would keep. I'm not that high on Lofgren.

Lofgren ...
is probably the best hitter of the three. And I think he is going to be a lot better pitcher than most people think. At least on par with Poreda, and probably good for more innings and consistent wins. Just my gut, but the guy is a gamer. That doesn't show up in the scouting reports at this stage all too much, but he is the kind of competitor that will get better the tougher competition he faces.

for sure
i played against him in high school...big-time gamer

no kidding ...
Where did you go to school?

we played in a tournament
against them one time at san leandro high i believe it was...dennis dixon (qb, oregon/drafted by braves) was at san leandro then and was unbelievable too. i was a sophomore at amador valley high. i think lofgren went yard against us. that guy could hit just as well as he could throw.

haha
I think i might have been in that tourny as well... I played a few tournies at San Leandro but not sure if it was this one. I went to Castro Valley High and played against San Leandro when Dennis Dixon and Jerrod Page(starting safety for the KC Chiefs) were on that team. So many scouts in the stands it was ridiculous.

no kidding man
jarrad page was so good. he got drafted higher in the MLB draft than the NFL draft IIRC. never understood why he didn't/couldn't sign with the angels (i think it was LAA), but i guess he turned out okay

another question
we are having our "reserves" draft. this cut being made is to get my roster to 8 minor leaguers. we are allowed to pick both major or minor leaguers. if i were to cut lofgren and draft my major league reserve (possibly rickie weeks, hiroki kuroda or scott olsen...waivers isn't very deep)...i have the eighth pick and it is a snake. i traded my second round pick for tom gorzelanny already. if the third round pick comes around and chris davis from the rangers is still available, should i cut rowell for him? i've heard davis might not stick at third.

Rowell might not either
If you have a chance at Rickie Weeks, I think he is way more valuable than anyone that you mentioned...

weeks
would be great...him lasting to the 8th pick is no guarantee.

and good point about rowell.
