Gerald Laird traded to Tigers for two prospects
http://www.freep.com/article/20081207/SPORTS02/81207045/1048/SPORTS
The two prospects are Guillermo Moscoso and Carlos Melo.
Does anybody have anything on the Guillermo Moscoso's stuff? His numbers are amazing to look at but could this just be a case of an older prospect dominating the younger kids. He's going to be 25 so whatever the case may be he needs to get moving up the ladder if he ever wants to amount to much.
Then you have Carlos Melo who seems to have great stuff for a 17 year old but I personally have never heard of him before this trade. Any Detroit fan heard anything about him before now?
I'm just ecstatic that this opens the way for the Rangers to start Teagarden or Saltalamacchia this year. With Laird around and Ron Washington managing I doubt this would have been the case.

Moscoso ranked 10th in Detroit's system by BA
But for me, he was only 2nd to Porcello in terms of possible value. He’s been battling injuries the last couple years, which is why he’s a bit old for his levels last year. But his stuff is legit; it’s not like he’s carving kids up with stuff that won’t play in the majors.
I think he could possibly win a rotation spot in the spring, but I might just be enamored with the guy.
Tigers
Nice trade for the Tigers here. Getting a league-average starting Catcher for a RP prospect is a smart move.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.
According to BA,
Moscoso has a 91-92 fastball with late riding action. They call it a swing and miss pitch. He has a deceptive delivery. He also throws a curve and a change but neither are as effective as his fastball.
Moscoso
Scouting reports I’ve seen says he has decent stuff, but it certainly doesn’t match the numbers he put up. Flyball pitcher, supposedly tops out at 92 with average curve and change. Struggling in Venezuelan league, supposedly because he likes to start.
As a Tiger fan, I like this trade. I thought Moscoso could contribute to a team in a year or two out of the bullpen or as a back of the rotation starter, but not anything more than that (unlike Jurrjens….still painful). Laird doesn’t seem great to me, but I’ll take league average at C for 2 years and run.

Moscoso
His stuff is good but not great. He throws a lot of strikes. I like him, but his extreme flyball tendencies could be bad news in Arlington.
I really hate to see what is happening
to the Tiger franchise. They continue to trash their farm system for mediocrity. The only thing they have to show for wiping out a decent farm system is the designated fat boy who hits. I hate to see this franchise who fought its way back be ruined for years by the ineptness of ownership and upper managemenrt. A real tragedy IMO.
Eh
They’ve sold off some crap and gotten some decent parts. I don’t think Moscoso is worth much and you certainly can’t credit a 17-year-old lottery ticket with much value.
They have to win now. Their lineup is getting old. After this season, I think it’s a tear-down.
Your 2008 Athletics: It's Nothing Personal.
What decent parts are we talking about?
They finished last in the Central and were old two years ago. You don’t think a tear-down has already started. You just traded for a ML backup to be your #1 catcher and added the legendary Adam Everett to play SS. The crap you let go has played far better than the decent parts you have, most of which are so old and overpaid that they have little, if any, trade value.
I have no idea if Moscoso is worth much or if the 17 YO has a future but they continue to give away their future for mediocrity or less. They haven’t made a decent move since taking on Sheffield.
