Fantasy Trade Question including Triunfel

I've been offered Sean Gallagher & a 1st round MiLB draft pick for Carlos Triunfel (I own Triunfel)

There is still a lot of solid talent available for the draft, and I know I could potentially pick up a fast rising prospect there. I don't want to post any names specifically because a lot of guys in my league browse this site.

Star-divide

Basically to me, it comes down to what everyone thinks about Gallagher & Triunfel.

My roster:

I'm not sure about Triunfel staying at SS, and if he does, I already have Tulo there. I'm also hoping for Brett Wallace to stay at 3B and be able to replace Glaus on my MLB roster by mid 2010. Obviously if Triunfel ends up at 2B, it would help me out a lot there, but I think that's the 3rd and least likely option for him.

My MLB starting pitching is very good at the top, but after my 1-2-3 of Johan, Beckett, and Weaver, there are a good amount of ?'s.

What is everyones advice? Thanks in advance

What talent is avaliable?

Could you score a good SS prospect?

by demondeaconsbaseball on Dec 4, 2008 12:59 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

yeah

not a TOP prospect like Triunfel, but there are some good ones. Like I said before, I don’t wanna say any specific names and screw myself over.

Let me put it this way

If you can grab someone like Tim Beckham or another low-level, high ceiling SS prospect, I’d do it.

by demondeaconsbaseball on Dec 4, 2008 1:08 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

IMHO

Triunfel is a LONG ways away from having fantasy production. If you can get someone who helps your team now or closer term in the draft, then I think I would make the trade.

I’d worry about not having a backup for Tulo though. His health is far from guaranteed, but Triunfel isn’t going to help that.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

+1/2

I agree about Tulo- you probably don’t need a backup, and if you do, you can find someone on waivers or make a deal. I’d go for a high upside SS with the draft pick so if he pans out, you can deal Tulo.

Gallagher is going to be a stud

He had flashes of brilliance last year including his first start for the A’s but had played through some injuries for a while and posted some unspectacular numbers. If he has dealt with those injuries I think he could become a solid #3 and possibly a #2 by the end of the year. Billy Beane loved this kid since the draft, and Billy knows what he is doing.

I like Gallagher too

and in fact paid quite a bit to get him in the middle of last year. His ERA in Oakland wasn’t pretty, but his FIP was very respectable for a 22 year old who had already excelled at every minor league level. A good starter this year is significantly more valuable than even an excellent prospect like Triunfel. The draft pick is just gravy

I don't see how

you decline this trade. Gallagher + slightly lesser shortsop > Triunfel

most of these opinions are geared toward real life

guys, in real life yes if gallagher turns out to be a #2/#3 starter type he will be more valueable than a high ceiling prospect. but not in fantasy. not even close.

number 2 and 3 starters in 12 team fantasy are borderline waiver wire guys, even in a 20 team league such as you are in, unless you see gallagher as having ace potential he maps out as a fantasy back of the rotation type guy. that can be easily replaced.

triunfel is a potential elite level middle infielder, which in fantasy is a franchise maker. elite level players win in fantasy, not #3 starters.

you also seem to be worried about the positional makeup of your team 2-3 years down the road, which is stupid- again, fantasy is different than real life in the sense that its easy to turn half your roster over via trades in 24 hrs if you so desire. dont worry about your positional needs 2-3 yrs out, just get the best players period you can, and worry about the fit later.

now, i cant comment about the draft pick and the potential value of that, because you seem to want to be all cloak and dagger. but if you are comparing gallagher directly to triunfel, IMO this isnt even a comparison.

in sum:
gallagher- ceiling: #2/3, back of your rotation guy. floor #4/5, waiver wire guy (fairly easily replaceable either way)
triunfel- ceiling: elite stud. franchise maker. floor: AAA flame out. no skin off your back, doesnt cost your team anything

in real life you take the sure thing. in fantasy you take the ceiling. every time.

True in a typical 12-team AL/NL league

But the OP specified a 20 team league with a deep bench and minors slots. In that case, I doubt that #2/#3 starters are found on the waiver wire.

I’m with those who say make the trade.

Right

Pitching gets thin real friggin quick.

by alskor on Dec 5, 2008 1:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

as i said above: in a 20 team a #2/3 is a back of the rotation guy. that can usually be easily replaced. not necessarily off the waiver wire, but those types of guys are easy to acquire at low cost.

the overriding point is gallagher is more than likely going to be a replaceable guy. if triunfel pans out, he wont.

i’m sorry but trading a potential superstar for a middle of the rotation guy is a mistake in fantasy.

I really think the ship has sailed

on Triunfel as a potential superstar. Looks like he’s a 3B, and no one projected him for a superstar level bat over there.

by alskor on Dec 5, 2008 2:03 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i love it

when people sail the ship on 18 year olds!

by Wheelhouse on Dec 6, 2008 7:32 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

people didnt sail it

he did.

Do you really think he’ll stick at SS? If not, do you really think he has the potential for a superstar level bat at 3B?

by alskor on Dec 6, 2008 10:41 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you are giving up on him

many others still believe in him and his potential

he has the potential to stick at SS

he has the potential to be a superstar level bat at 3B

it is too early to draw any definite conclusions on his ceiling based on his advanced tools

but hey, don’t let me stop you, keep making your assumptions……..the same ones you likely made about hanley ramirez before he made you look silly!

Just for the record,

There are 30 teams meaning there are roughly 150 starters (because of injuries, etc, not exactly that, but no matter). If you play in a 20 team league, then, and started 4 starters every week, then 80 of the 150 SPs (i.e all of the #1s, all of the #2s, and almost all of the #3s) would be starting each week. If you wanted some reserves, though, in case of injuries etc, and wanted to have 2 starters on your bench to switch in and out, then the league would use 120 of the 150s pitchers, i.e. everything but the #5s. In such a league, a #2 or a #3 on a decent team would certainly have value and be nowhere close to the waiver wire.

Triunfel has a legit shot at breaking into the majors mid-2010

For what that’s worth, and Seattle has no SS/2B depth in their system higher up than Triunfel, so he will get his opportunity barring a big FA signing or trade.

Another thing to keep in mind is the Safeco factor. Triunfel has a good chance to be a stud, but the power numbers may take extra long to develop considering how Safeco Field eats right handers for breakfast.
