Khalil Greene to Cardinals
Traded for two relief prospects. Think one was Chris Perez? Off the top of my head I can't think of who the other guy would be. San Diego continues the salary dump. I've never been a Khalil Greene fan but I guess he can't be worse than Cesar Izturis.

cardinals stop it!
quit getting guys who underachieve and making them play slightly better so everyone can praise you for almost being a winning team with a bunch of guys who are overachieving, you are big market, aj burnett is from a town 6 hours away, go pay someone money, wow

Haha
I never get the Cardinals… they always act like theyre two years away from contending. They are a big money, big market team. They still do well (and backed into a title in 05) and they are run fairly well… it just seems they never really leverage their resources. Even the last couple years of Jocketty…

Even though I'm a Cards fan, I agree a little...
I think the Cards philosophy (or at least Jocketty’s) was to get cheap, older veterans who had been good in years past. When the new GM came in, Mozeliak, I thought it was going to be different, but I guess not. I guess he’s crossing his fingers and hoping Greene has a good season. They did the same thing with Felipe Lopez this past year, but it paid off pretty well.
I don’t feel like the Cards are always feeling like they’re two years away from competing. However, that’s exactly what I thought to get me through the 2007 and 2008 seasons (even though 2008 didn’t turn out nearly as bad as I thought it would). However, we do have some good prospects for once and I think we will be able to compete for the central title soon.
Hopefully Mozeliak turns it around and gets us going on a new path. Even though I don’t know why “you never get the Cardinals.” It had been a very successful franchise even though they can’t compete with the Cubs payroll wise. I think they do what they have to do and make it work a lot of the time. The last couple years haven’t been great but the three years before that the Cards had great teams.

sorry, should have been clear
I am definitely a cards fan, that’s why it irritates me so much

see, that's not true
the cards have not had a “great” team in a while, they won the world series because of Jeff Weaver, remember him? you may not, he pitched like a hands-down ace for the playoffs and then just vanished into suckiness immediately after he was done…that’s the cardinals, they just feel like teamwork and spirit and playing 150 different lineups and “outcoaching” will somehow win games even though their team is just not as good as others, I mean the second players leave their team and aren’t in their lineup like Taguchi they just drop off the planet, those guys suck and come on dude, LaRussa bats the pitcher 8, there is absolutely zero excuse for that, anyone who argues that is a moron, hence, obviously I have no respect for LaRussa and constantly say that he makes it look like they “almost were good”…he literally does NOT help the team at all, take all his victories and hand those teams to someone else who knows how to bat the pitcher 9th and not play adam kennedy and so taguchi and you might come out with a real winner

Follow the Barry Bonds model, just do it a bit better
If you have one player who’s worth 10 wins all on his own, you can build a .500 team and still make the playoffs most years. A lot of GMs view the playoffs, once you get in, as a crapshoot anyway. Just depends on whether people get hot at the right time.

Why?
If you have an Albert Pujols, then why be so conservative? Why not try to build an actually outstanding team?

Yeah
I believe Perez was to be their CLOSER OF THE FUTURE! …that needed a crazy echo.

I don't think its Perez...
who is their closer for now, and the future.

Jason Motte would be interesting.
He has sick numbers.

Motte would make sense...
But the Cards refused to deal him at the deadline. He would be absolutely dominant in Petco, though.

Hmmm … a young Padres shortstop to the Cardinals. Last time that worked out pretty well.
by StickRat on Dec 4, 2008 2:31 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
If he can regain his pre-2008 form....
…then this is a good pickup for the cards. Until last year when he was atrocious, his road splits have been excellent for a SS.

$$
$6.5M is a lot of money. Still, depending on who the two RPs are (very unlikely one of them will be Chris Perez), it could work out for the Cards.
I hate this move for the Padres, however, if it is finalized before anything happens with Peavy. They just create a huge hole for themselves at SS and crush their trade leverage even more.

Leverage
Not sure I agree. This frees up substantial money so the Pads can threaten to keep Peavy. I think this increases their trade leverage.
by Dfarth on Dec 4, 2008 3:52 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Since Greene was apparently included in the Peavy/Escobar deal, I think teams will see through that bluff. Saving $6.5M from Greene’s contract doesn’t do nearly enough (even if they deal Giles) to get them under the salary mandate, as I understand it.

That's not the case
The Braves never wanted Greene.
by mraver on Dec 5, 2008 12:27 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How could you possibly know that?
He was included in the press reports.
Regardless, cutting $5.5M is only the beginning of the Padres payroll control. There’s much more to come.

So he's a Card now?
Watch him have his best season now.
He’s probably their new formerly decent breakout star for one year player…
Honestly, I think he can be pretty good for them…w/e Cubs are still better.

Mark Worrell and a PTBN
At least that’s what Rotoworld is reporting.

Yeah, there was no way Perez or Motte was in this deal
They’re lucky to be getting anything for him.

Greene could easily be worse than Izturis
if he does not rebound from his struggles this year.
by nms on Dec 4, 2008 4:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn't say "easily"
It’s fairly difficult to be worse than Izturis.

he definitely was last year
his obp was .50 worse, that is a ton for a guy who only got a .310 obp and someone is .50 worse and he k’s 100 to like 20 where izturis was about 25/30 k/bb and their slugging was real similar, AND cesar had 4X the steals at 20/5….cesar pretty much did everything better in a big way last year and still SUCKED royally bad

greene is, at worst, a niche player
he has power. he has some speed. he plays good defense. i think it comes down to this, if he’s a .220 hitter, he doesn’t have the plate discipline to be a starter. if he can hit .250, he’s easily one of the 30 most qualified professional ballplayers to play SS everyday.
When they should be sacrifice bunting, they are buying effeminate designer jeans. When they should be fouling off pitches, they are masturbating. Always, they are masturbating.

Cardinals
need to either reel in Manny or get an ace or something. It’s ridiculous.

Cardinal bashing
I don’t quite get it here… they essentially traded nothing for a 29 yr. old SS with a career 270/318/484 line on the road and (correct me if I’m off-base) a decent glove. Sure, Greene is not a great player, but he has put up OPS+ of 114, 95, 97, and 100 in 4 of the last 5 years, definitely impressive enough for a SS.
It’s an upside-only move IMO. The cost is minimal in both players and salary and he’s in the prime of his career. I like it a lot for St. Louis.

you are correct, it was a good trade...
…if that didn’t keep them from be able to sign furcal, cabrera, renteria, etc, but since now they are stuck with greene as their starting shortstop it is a stupid move since they need a lead-off hitter and a SS both really bad, i mean if they get some huge bat like a Manny, Dunn, etc and a good pitcher then MAYBE this is a move that isn’t bad since they needed that money elsewhere, but the fact that they didn’t go after a good SS is just insulting to the fans
by IHateMitchMustain on Dec 5, 2008 12:23 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
did the cards have the financial flexibility
to land furcal, or heck, even renteria (based on what the Giants gave him)? for that matter, cabrera?
I like this deal for the Cards. At worst, they get a solid defensive shortstop. I think Greene bounces back, though, and has a solid offensive year.
