2009 Breakout pitchers

Who are your breakout pitcher candidates for the 2009 season?

Off the top of my head, Wilmer Font, Martin Perez, Hector Correa

Some way under the radar prospects from the marlins are RHP Blake Brewer (18) and LHP Edgar Olmos (18). Both are from the 08 draft. Both are projectable at 6'5" and have room to grow and add on some size which could lead to increase in velocity (not sure of their velo right now).

A few...

Matt Moore, Tampa Bay, Randall Delgado, Atlanta, and Juan Ramirez, Seattle, all look pretty good to me. I like Yong-Il Jung if he comes back healthy, as well.

I'm very curious about

Delgado, Brett DeVall, Casey Crosby and Jason Knapp

I’m waiting for this kid to breakout. He’s got all the talent to be a top pitching prospect.

Ah yes, I remember when I tried to get you to put him on your list a year or two back. Still waiting myself.

WILFREDO BOSCAN!

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?
KG: Oh yeah.
Scout: Well, he spent a lot of it on milkshakes.

Most overhyped pitching prospect in baseball.

I bet he walks a ridiculous amount of guys.

by alskor on Dec 3, 2008 5:53 PM EST up reply actions

I don't necessarily agree on the overhyped

Everybody pretty much acknowledges that along with the upside, he also has a massive amount of risk due to injuries and control. I don’t see anybody ranking Brackman in top 50 lists or anything, and given his ceiling putting him in a 50 to 100 range isn’t a stretch.

by jibs on Dec 3, 2008 7:20 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed on Heredia

I think Brackman might struggle with control in his first season back from TJ, but the talent is definitely there. Heredia on the other hand has put up great numbers in the GCL at 17 and the SAL at 18, yet has received very little hype. A season like this past one at 19 in the FSL would have him jump way up the top 100 list IMO.

You again?

-1… to you!

I mean, do not expect from him a lot right now since he’s back from TJS and is has not been pitching a lot in his life. You Sox fans would love to have a guy with stuffs like that, but… the man is tall, pretty raw in pitching and he was pretty decent after the disastrous first start in HWB. I mean I’d take guy who walks some but gives up not much hits, like Leiter in his prime.

Nick Adenhart!

:-)

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

by the pinstripes on Dec 3, 2008 5:18 PM EST reply actions

Hmm...

I think we’ll see big jumps from Kyle Lotzkar, Neil Ramirez, along with guys already mentioned like Moore, Main, Ramirez, and Locke.

Ramirez and Lotzkar were both highly touted draft picks, unfortuntaely Lotzkar is Canadian, so he is always going to have to overcome that problem, but other than that he could be ok

I think...

Rob Bryson, Bryan Morris, Chris Withrow, Justin Wilson, and Tim Melville will al breakout. Also, is Nick Hagadone going to pitch next year? If he is, then he will certainly top my list.

how is it a breakout when your the #1 HS pitcher going into the year and you only drop bc of money demands?

Scout: He was a first-round pick right? Got a huge bonus?

gotta keep your status

"If you hit .440 with 20 bombs, you don't have to do s---. You don't have to bring a glove to practice, just hit and leave whenever you want. You can bring a 40 and smoke a cigarette and call me from the parking lot asking me what time the game is, and I'll tell you. You can even say 'F--- you, Steve!' Actually, don't say that, that wouldn't be very nice." -Steve Friend, Head Coach, Chabot College Gladiators Baseball

Any thoughts on Jake Odorizzi??

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

by Savoy on Dec 3, 2008 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Odorizzi is pretty polished for a 2008 draftee. He has good command and a fastball that sits in the low 90s. His curveball is good and changeup is solid. His slider is developing. He should have a good year next year.

by smscardinals1 on Dec 4, 2008 5:38 PM EST up reply actions

Juan Ramirez of the Mariners

Often regarded as the most polished member of 2008 Wisconsin (A) starting rotation, but Phillippe Aumont and Michael Pineda got most of the attention this past season. I like Ramirez to take big steps next season.

by JonBBT on Dec 3, 2008 9:55 PM EST reply actions

+?

certainly possible, I am very interested in guys like him, Brackman and others who are so massively tall, to see if they can truly repeat their deliveries and be successful, people always talk about how nasty tall guys are, but unfortunately there really just aren’t that many mlb examples of guys that big making it, though the ones who do are usually good

Sure, he’s almost twice as old as anybody else on this list, but perhaps this is the year he learns to fully harness his Jedi powers and throw strikes.
