OT: Requesting John's Thoughts on new Star Trek
Long-time readers of the site and John's books know that he is a dyed in the wool Trek geek.
Having seen the various short and long-form trailers for the new J.J. Abrams "Star Trek" film, I'm curious to get John's thoughts on the "re-imagining" of the Original Series characters.
Is he deliriously excited? Cautiously optimistic? Disturbed that Paramount may retroactively destroy his childhood memories?
The public needs to know.

Trek
I’m concerned. Trying to have an open mind, but worried that wholesale rewritting of canon will piss me off. :)
If worse comes to worst, I can just focus on Star Fleet Batltes and worry less about Canon Trek.
I’m a lot geekier than most of you know. In addition to all the baseball stuff, I also write role-playing books for the Star Fleet Universe, which is based on original series Trek.
I wrote a book about the Romulans: http://www.warehouse23.com/item.html?id=ADB8404
And I am currently writing a book about the Federation.

I'm sure I'm not
near the Trek geek John is, but have watched the series since the 70’s when I was a kid. I remember when the the Next Gen series rumors started it polarized the fans quite a bit. I think most who had doubts ended up liking the series, but Roddenberry was part of that.
I think the previews look pretty sweet, but also have my reservations. It could be well done – it may just be the latest franchise to follow the re-birthing trend in Hollywood (Batman Begins, Star Wars prequels, etc.)

Etc.??
“Batman Begins, Star Wars prequels, etc.”
A little like “Scarlett Johansson, Rosie O’Donnell, etc.”

Batman Begins is Scartlett Johansson, while the Star Wars prequels are Rosie O'Donnell...
Meaning Christopher Nolan has done a great job with Batman, the movies are great, the characters great, the darkness great. Scarlett Johansson is hot, young, and marrying Ryan Reynolds. While the Star Wars sequels sucked… like Rosie O’Donnell.

I'm excited
As a big fan of both Trek and Lost, I know J.J. Abrams is going to put together a great story.

Other movies
I just got done watching Step Brothers and laughed my fucking ass off. I thought it looked stupid when it came out, but one of my friends brought it over on DVD. It may be Will Ferrell’s best movie… I recommend it highly. Most of us here seem to need a good laugh – it’s hysterical.
Can’t wait for Dark Knight next week – just got my new blu-ray player.
