Building a Fantasy Rotation

Hey Guys,

Having gone through the top 100+ prospects, I'm curious if you could build a fantasy baseball rotation which 5 minor league starters would you take. These are guys you think are going to be fantasy studs, not just a #3 type, that will realistically reach that potential. The categories would be wins, k's, ERA and Whip.

Mine are:

1. David Price

2. Neftali Feliz

3. Trevor Cahill

4. Madison Bumgarner

5. Rick Porcello

I had Porcello narrowly over Inoa and Holland for the fifth spot.

My Rotation
  1. David Price
  2. Max Scherzer
  3. Rick Porcello
  4. Madison Bumgarner
  5. Brian Matusz

If Scherzer doesn’t qualify, then I’d take Jarrod Parker in his place.

Took Matusz as my fifth starter because I think he is a “sure thing” pitching prospect. (and he’s lefty)

Depends what time frame we're talking about

But in the short-medium term (2-3 years) I’d take:

1. Price (clearly the #1)
2. Cahill
3. Tillman
4. Bumgarner
5. Anderson

with Feliz in the mix; I’m not sure he’ll have immediate big league success and he may end up in the pen, though I think he’ll remain a starter. Holland and Alderson also possibilities.

didn’t read through the whole post… thought this was a post of what you had built up on your own team. not what you would draft given the chance.

Hanson

Wow. Hanson completely slipped my mind. He’d definately have to be in there.

If you have Hanson in there...

I hope your home park is Petco, lol. Lots of flyballs!

ouch

his go/ao is pretty atrocious. .71 for the year…

by PhillyPhanatic on Dec 29, 2008 11:39 PM EST up reply actions

but...

if he keeps missing bats like he does and keeps his walks to a minimum like he has. He minimizes the potential damage that the high flyball rate can have.

Johan Santana

Is an extreme FB pitcher but like you said he mises a ton of bats as well. But since Hanson has started throwing his slider again in the no-hitter game the FBs have been down.

1. David Price

my list

Price
Cahill
Scherzer (still a prospect?)
Hanson
Brett Anderson

Not my top 5 SP prospects but the guys I’d want in my farm system first. If Max doesn’t count then Feliz

by cowboy4eva on Dec 29, 2008 11:49 PM EST reply actions

+1 almost

I’d actually swap Feliz and Anderson. And I’d have Scherzer 2 and Cahill 3. So,
Price
Scherzer
Cahill
Hanson
Feliz
(If Scherzer doesn’t count, then Anderson)

Mine

Assuming the time frame is forever here…

Feliz
Bumgarner
Price
Martin Perez
Michael Inoa

These are the 5 guys that, IMO, have the best overall shot at being legit aces. Then again, my definition of a legit ace is pretty strict. I like guys like Hanson and Cahill a lot, but they both have control issues that I am not convinced will go away in the bigs and I see them as more of a true #2 starter that may happen to be the #1 starter on his team due to circumstances (i.e. lack of a legit ace on his team). A guy like Feliz, on the other hand, needs to refine is secondary offerings. If he does, he’ll be hands down the best of the five. I am talking Francisco Liriano pre-injury kind of great.

Porcello, on the other hand, is a true wildcard here. If the Tigers let him use all his secondary offerings, he may become true ace material… or it may not make that big of a difference. Time will tell with him.

by guru4u on Dec 30, 2008 12:00 AM EST reply actions

Martin Perez

Could you shed a little light on why you are so high on Martin Perez? To be honest i don’t know a whole lot about him and was just interested in your reasonings for being so high on him.

by PhillyPhanatic on Dec 30, 2008 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

BA

Someone on Baseball America made a comment that Martin Perez has Johan-like stuff, or something along those lines. Needless to say, Perez quickly got on everyone’s radar. That aside, the kid put up decent numbers for a 17 year old actually. Rangers have some fantastic arms in their system. IMHO, they blow Oakland right out of the water.

by Dewey Finn on Dec 30, 2008 12:14 AM EST up reply actions

No

The original comment was from a scout in the NWL saying that Perez resembled Johan physically, and since then it’s been turned into Perez has Johan-like stuff. It’s been discussed here more than once. I think Perez is a good arm and could be a good pitcher, but he’s been overrated here and elsewhere because of a quote that has been twisted around.

ya,

he doesnt have Johan stuff yet but he already has a low 90’s fastball with great movement (thats reached 94 and can add move velo as he fills out), a plus curve (BA rated best in the system and that’s saying alot with the way the Rangers have been stacking pitchers with curves) and a change with legidament plus abiltity. Like John said Perez will need time but still Johan is one of the best pitcher of his generation and Perez probably won’t reach that.

Here’s a short clip of him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hNZNVMI4zxo

The quote:

Here is the exact quote:

Greg, TX: Who is the best left handed pitcher on the Rangers farm not named Derek Holland?

John Manuel: It might be Martin Perez even INCLUDING Derek Holland. I got a Johan Santana comp on Perez from a scout in the Northwest the other day, he sounds extremely exciting.

Personally, I think they are referring to his stuff although I can see how such a quote can be widely interpreted.

by King Billy Royal on Dec 30, 2008 1:20 PM EST up reply actions

Very vague...

“a Johan comp” could be referring to anything. The scout could have said he has an accent like Johan, and that would count as a Johan comp.

I think that quick of a “comp” with no supporting information means the comp is pretty useless right now. Until we hear “great movement” or “similar body size” or SOMETHING to warrant excitement, we should just all quit sucking each other’s lollipops about Martin Perez for now.

However

Since Manuel stated that he might be better then Derek Holland, there is reason to get excited.

Yes

that’s the quote that Dewey is talking about, but I’ve read another “insider” type like Manuel who said the original quote was about physical resemblance, not stuff. The problem is, the quote has been misinterpereted, and then inflated upon even further around here.

Let's see...

17 yrs old, great velocity for his age, compact, clean delivery, advanced feel for secondary pitches. Forget about the Johan talk – there is still quite a bit to like about this kid. He obviously has a very long ways to go though, and given this is Sickels’ site (who leans more towards the conservative, close to the bigs guys), I am not surprised to read all the hatred for even mentioning Perez’s name.

by guru4u on Dec 30, 2008 1:48 PM EST up reply actions

Sure

Price
Porcello
Hanson
Schzerer
Samardzija

Bit of risk with possibly both Schzerer and Samardzija going to the pen, but I like it overall. Most of these guys have a higher chance of becoming aces due to their proximity to the bigs (Porcello excepted, but I’m a Tigers homer, so shoot me).

by David Tokarz on Dec 30, 2008 1:17 AM EST reply actions

Samardzija

Everyone has jumped his bandwagon because he throws hard to me he reminds me a ton of a younger Manny Acosta. The numbers are too similar from both rookie seasons.

Samardzija – ..G……ERA………..IP…………H……….ER………BB………K
……………………..26…..2.28………27.2……..24………..7………..18………25

Acosta – ………G……..ERA………..IP………….H………ER……..BB……….K
……………………21…….2.28………23.2……….13………6………..14………22

Mine...

I am leaving Price off mine since I don’t see him as a minor league pitcher anymore. But he would obviously be #1.

1. Porcello (I liken him to Halladay)
2. Feliz (I love me some GB pitchers)
3. Trevor Cahill (worried about the walks, but still a solid #3 in most rotations)
4. Brett Cecil (Groundball LHP)
5. Max Scherzer (decent groundball and better stuff).

With such a high GB rotation, it allows for a better defensive, but maybe less offensive infield. I am a big believer in GB pitchers with plus defenders in the infield and power bats in the OF.

by Boxkutter on Dec 30, 2008 2:09 AM EST reply actions

Feliz

I don’t know that he is really a groundball pitcher. go/ao was 1.19 combined over both stops this year, and .97 last year. He had a nice rate in the midwest elague, but was around .73 I think in AA this year.

If this is supposed to be possible ace material, I’d go:

1. Price
2. Feliz
3. Hanson
4. Holland
5. Bumgarner

Anderson, Cahill, Porcello all good. I think of Anderson more as a number 2. Holland looked great last year, and probably more risk there. But I think he could be an ace.

by wobatus on Dec 31, 2008 12:58 PM EST up reply actions

Well

I’m going to go out on a limb on these picks (I’m leaving Price off for the hell of it, he is number one)

1) David Price
2) Jhoulys Chacin
3) Brian Matusz
4) Brett Anderson
5) Jarrod Parker

I feel these are the “low-risk” picks, and thats the direction I would like to head. If I were valuing upside a little more it would probably go

1) David Price
2) Madison Bumgarner
3) Tim Alderson
4) Trevor Cahill
5) Neftali Feliz

I like Feliz alot, but I’m still not sold that he stays in the rotation.

whoops

said I was going to leave Price off, but I didn’t. the subconcious is a powerful thing I guess

Shit...

nice call on Chacin. Before I started my post above yours, I had planned on him being in there, but totally forgot about him when I started to write it out. I would put him above Max for the #5 spot.

How about a 2009 version of rookies that will have an impact? Please disregard if I’m straying too much from original thread.

re: 2009-?

CC.Sabathia,
A.J. Burnett,
Ben Sheets,
Chien Ming-Wang…

oh, you’re talking fantasy roto :)

I’d take:

1. David Price,
2. Jake McGee (healthy)
2b. Madison Bumgarner
3. Tim Alderson
4.Wade Davis
5. Tommy Hanson

it’s a close call between Cahill, B. Anderson, Feliz, Chacin, Ty. Robertson (Twins) and Wade Davis.
the reason I didn’t pick Feliz and other Ranger pitchers, is quite frankly the Rangers don’t have a good track record in developing their pitching prospects! for instance, I believe in the San Francisco Giants, or Braves organization when developing their pitchers far more than the Rangers!
