I am now working on the Dodgers for the book. The next team on the list is the Cleveland Indians, so use this thread to discuss Tribe prospects.

Santana
BA has Santana ranked #1 I think. But not as the best at anything in there system. Is his best asset the ability to catch while being a decent player. I know Santana was awesome this year. But is it real? What do you guys think? What type of player will he be in the majors?
It all depends on how he’ll do next year in AA. It’s very encouraging to see BA feeling that his breakout was real, and he continued to hit after the trade, so it wasn’t just a product of the California league. From what I’ve read he still has some work to do defensively, but most scouts feel he’ll stick behind the plate. Also, the fact that he BA didn’t rank him as being the best at any particular thing is probably due to other players just being a little bit better at specific parts of the game (power: LaPorta, average: Brantley, discipline: Weglarz), but overall Santana has all those skills, therefore making him the best prospect in the system.
Maybe he fizzles out, but his upside is Victor Martinez with a better arm. Let’s not forget that outside of 2007, he hit pretty well, so it’s not like he never showed any ability before.
Trey Haley 2nd round pick is a major sleeper for me in 2009
comparable stuff to Clay Buchholz.
Yup
You opened my eyes to him. Thanks!
Now raise your goblet of rock. It's a toast to those who rock!
I really liked this guy
Until I heard you liked him . . .no joke.
Hello mrkupe,
Come on – you’re not telling me you’ve changed your mind just because Bravesin07 likes him? I doubt that every player you’ve liked Braves has not liked and vice-versa; you likely have agreed at some point in the past. :-)
Seriously, I think Haley has good high-ceiling potential, but it could take him some time to realize it, based on the reports I’ve heard and the limited sample size he showed last season. Reports seem to indicate that his delivery needs work and he needs to continue to develop his pitches. The good thing is that he is young enough (I think he is just 18 for the 2009 season if I remember correctly), so the Indians have plenty of time to work with him – if they can harness his ability, a very solid starter, maybe even frontline starter, is a possibility.
Just my 2 cents.
Take care and have a Happy and Prosperous 2009! :-)
The "cream of the crop" doesn't always rise to the top.
Hector Rondon
I am suprised he wasnt in the BA top 10. I see him taking a huge step and at this time next year being a top 50 guy.
+1
He should be in the top 10, perhaps at the expense of Chisenhall, Brantley, or Rivero (these 3 made BA’s top 10). Rondon had a very impressive season, striking out a batter per inning as a 20 year old in High A. Less than H/IP, 1.190 WHIP, strong K/BB (better than 3 to 1).
He should be no lower than B-, perhaps even a B, with the potential to earn an even higher grade a year from now.
+1 – he definitely seems legit and is a Top 10 Indians’ prospect in my mind.
He was reportedly throwing an “easy” 95 MPH in the Futures according to World Manager Larry Parrish and his ratio components were quite strong. The FB/GB ratio was only 0.85, which isn’t unusual for a power pitcher, plus he only gave up 12 HRs in 145.0 IP (that’s only 16-17 HRs over the course of 200.0 IP).
I certainly think he is one to keep an eye on.
Just my 2 cents.
Take care and have a Happy and Prosperous 2009! :-)
