Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Post TJ Surgery: Carrillo & Diamond

I was wondering what the community thought about where Cesar Carrillo and Thomas Diamond are in their careers this far removed from TJ surgery, and what you think their short/long term prospects are at this point. I know that Carrillo had an uneven AFL and that Jon Daniels mentioned it's possible Diamond could make the big club in spring as a reliever. Can they bounce back with some degree of success (and if so, to what level?) or are they just more names to be added to the long list of guys whose careers were cut short by the injury bug. Thanks for the help.

Cesar Carrillo

I’m interested in seeing how his arm bounces back in time for ‘09 Spring Training. His stuff hasn’t been very impressive so far, but that’s to be expected when a guy comes back from TJ. One thing he has going for him is that he was very polished coming out of college, so the development time he missed probably isn’t going to hurt him as much as it would most pitching prospects.

Short-term, I don’t think Carrillo’s prospects are that great. Long-term, I’d be slightly more optimistic about him than I would most minor league TJ recoverers, and wouldn’t be surprised if he’s pitching well in the majors in 2010.

With Hoffman gone

Carillo on the 40 man and Bell nearing free agency. Any thought that Carrillo could be a closer?

I thought...

the appeal of Carrillo was that he was a polished college guy with three strong pitches and solid command, not that he necessarily had overpowering stuff. Sounds like the kind of guy that’s a lot more valuable as a starter than a reliever.

Diamond is projected

to be on the Rangers’ staff at some point in 09. He only pitched about 55 innings last year after he was shut down for surgery to remove bone spurs from one of his ankles. He was struggling with his control while in AA before this. Many suggest that he is most likely to join the bullpen. Aaron Fitt has stated that some in the org still rank him in the 15-20 range as a prospect but most have him in the 25-30 range. As far as I recall his velo was not back to normal before he was shut down.
