Expansion Draft

I'm creating two expansion teams for my sim league this year (Portland and New Jersey). For the expansion draft, each MLB team can protect fifteen players on their 40 man roster, then three more each round. Each expansion team will select 35 players, and no team can lose more than three players.

For this exercise, list your team (or more than one team if you wish) and list the fifteen players you think they would protect. Then list the three additional players they would protect in round two, and the three additional players they would protect in round three.

I would imagine a lot of bad contracts will be exposed, as they were in 1997, so feel free to expose guys like Gary Matthews Jr., Juan Pierre, etc.

Much appreciated. If there is interest, maybe we'll even run the expansion draft together. Wow, I'm a nerd.

I would keep Wagner over Tatis

He may be on the DL, but he is too much of a talent to just let go

by mtk52983 on Dec 22, 2008 8:46 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

i dont think anyone would pick up Wagner.

He is out next season with TJ surgery and I think it is too risky to pick up his 2010 $8 million option as a 38/39 year old.

Exactly

Why would an expansion team want to spend around $20 million (if the point is to pick up his option) for seven months of an old TJS recoveree? Even if they did take him, the Mets would get out of paying him all that money. Meanwhile Tatis is both useful and affordable, a valuable commodity even on a big market club.

You don’t need to protect Lars, Tejeda, ect…they aren’t on the 40-man roster.

Guys who are on the 40-man who you’d might want to protect:

Rangers

I’m assuming that players go with their contracts so I’m not necessarily protecting the best 15 players but rather the best 15 contracts. At least Feliz, Holland, Smoak etc. aren’t on the 40 making this a bit easier although i am sure others will disagree with this

Rays

1st Round (no particular order)
1) Carl Crawford – LF
2) B.J. Upton – CF
3) Matt Joyce – RF
4) Evan Longoria – 3B
5) Reid Brignac – SS
6) Carlos Pena – 1B
7) Dioner Navarro – C
8) James Shields – SP
9) Scott Kazmir – SP (some people may not agree because of contract, but trade bait)
10) Matt Garza – SP
11) David Price – SP
12) Wade Davis – SP
13) Jeff Niemann – SP
14) Andy Sonnanstine – SP
15) A toss up between Balfour/Bradford/McGee/Aybar/Gross/Perez/Ruggiano/Bartlett/Aki. I chose Aybar because hes a cheaper 2B than Aki with similar production

Round 2
1) Jacob McGee – P
2) Fernando Perez – OF
3) Chad Bradford – RP (the contract might raise some eyebrows, but only one year after which the Rays can re-evaluate where they are with the influx of pitching and McGee in particular))

Round 3
1) Grant Balfour – RP
2) J.P. Howell – RP
3) John Jaso – C

wow… I am literally pissed off after doing that because I had to leave off Arb. Eligible Bartlett and 4.5 million dollar Aki… Other notbale players left off are Ruggiano/Thayer/Hammel/Talbot/Wheeler/Gross and Zobrist.
2)

by Navi's_Navy on Dec 22, 2008 12:31 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Bartlett

has a lot of value as a defensive player., and even if he is arb-eligible, he doesn’t put up the offensive numbers that will land him a big salary. I’d put him at 15 and slide everybody else down a notch, bumping Jaso at the bottom.

by DrunkIrish on Dec 22, 2008 1:01 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Trust me, I love me Bartlett's defense

but that being said, if Bartlett is protected then you have him for only a year because we can assume (or I am assuming) that Brignac will be ready to start every day by opening day 2010, and I think that (unless his defense falls off the table again, which it might), he is more than capable of filling Bartlett’s shoes. He could be trade bait, but I have no idea what other GMs are gauging his value as.

I guess Brignac could be trade bait.

I see your point, although it all depends on what the arbitrator gives him

Can't say I agree with this one

Overall protects:
Evan Longoria
Willy Aybar
BJ Upton
Jason Bartlett
Reid Brignac
Carlos Pena
Dioner Navarro
Matt Joyce
David Price
Scott Kazmir
James Shields
Matt Garza
Andrew Sonnanstine
JP Howell
Wade Davis

2nd Round:
Grant Balfour
Jeff Niemann
Fernando Perez

3rd round:
Jacob McGee
Akinori Iwamura
Ben Zobrist

And yes

I intentionally left off Crawford. In a nutshell, he’s only got a year and an option left. It’s unlikely he resigns, and there are just too many other guys who are either integral in the short-term or who have many many years left to go. Besides, I don’t think there’s a huge drop off defensively or offensively to a Joyce-Perez-Upton outfield.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Padres

1st round:
Jake Peavy
Adrian Gonzalez
Brian Giles
Chris Young
Heath Bell
Chase Headley
Jody Gerut
Kevin Kouzmanoff
Matt Antonelli
Scott Hairston
Nick Hundley
Cla Meredith
Wade Leblanc
Will Venable
Cha Seung Baek (gross)

2nd Round
Cesar Ramos
Edgar Gonzalez
Josh Geer

3rd Round
Chad Reineke
Josh Banks
Will Inman

I’m assuming that we are only taking the 2009 season into account. If there are keepers, then Blanks, Kulbacki, Huffman, Buschmann, Miller, Latos, Garrison, Hunter, Dykstra, Decker would get more consideration over some of the fringy guys I listed.

8. Mariano Rivera
9. Robinson Cano
10. Nick Swisher
11. Xavier Nady
12. Johnny Damon
13. Damaso Marte
14. Hideki Matsui (though I could see him being left unprotected in the hope of someone taking his contract)
15. Melky Cabrera/Andrew Brackman/Jose Veras? I would protect Veras.

Next 3:
1. Melky Cabrera
2. Andrew Brackman
3. Alfredo Aceves?

Next 3:
1. Brian Bruney
2. Edwar Ramirez
3. Wilkins de la Rosa or David Robertson? Conceivably Brett Gardner

by OccamsRazor on Dec 22, 2008 3:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Why bother protecting Jeter?

I doubt too many expansion franchises are going to take on a contract of that size for a player of that production and who’s on the backswing of his career. Johnny Damon falls into that category too for that matter. I realize Jeter has sentimental value in the Bronx, but there aren’t too many teams who would want him for what he’s making.

Vogt early, Vogt often.

Rules

Just thought I’d say something. I believe the rule is that anyone with a no-trade clause must be protected and anyone from the 06 draft on would not be eligible (I believe, something like that)

I deliberately left Chavez off – I don’t think anyone would take him with his contract and recent injury history and performance over the last two years. Hopefully someone would take Crosby though, but I doubt it.
