Phillies
Is this a philly-based league? Seem like some overdrafts on the Phils.
The Dodgers won't win a playoff series until the Cool-a-Coo returns.

Knapp at the bottom of the 2nd
Is relatively low, considering. Hewitt’s probably a little high but such a strange prospect, who know what will happen with him. Who else do you think was overdrafted?

Gose
Sure seems overdrafted too. And just more Phils overall than anyone else.

He is a little high
You might be right. This draft seems pretty deep, and I bet a number of people were picking in the 2nd round anybody they had heard of, which might be all the Phillies’ picks

Phils
I think Collier went at the exact right spot. I had the next pick, and was going to take him at 2.1. Great tools, strong baseball skills, great makeup. Apparently, Jim Callis had him slightly above Hicks going into the draft, but was persuaded to flip them.
I took Knapp at 2.25, and feel he was an excellent find here. Coming directly out of the draft, KG called him the pitching equivalent of Hewitt: huge ceiling, but rough present skills. His got a big body and a great arm. But he also showed a lot of improvement just over the short season (walked just two batters over his last three starts), and gets raves for his makeup and effort. BA had him as the #4 prospect in the GCL, ahead of Zach Collier, Casey Kelly, Michael Almanzar, Anthony Hewitt, Esmailyn Gonzalez, etc. The combination of big tools, a decent learning curve, and positive reports on his makeup and effort all trend towards a possible breakout prospect for me.
Hewitt, like OldProspects said, is such a wild card, it’s hard to know where he “should” go. I ended up taking Yorman and Rafael Rodriguez at the end of the 2nd round, because that was about as high as I was willing to go on just athleticism. But I can see early 2nd round as a decent gamble as well.
If I were to re-draft, I think I would’ve taken Brad Holt at 2.1 instead of Dixon, and then hoped Dixon fell to me at 2.18 (if he didn’t, I’d still take Hak-ju Lee).
At 3.1, I took Tyler Sample, by the way.

If you're the Cardinals
I think you had a terrific draft. The only two picks I don’t get (because I don’t know very much about them) – Rashun Dixon and Hak-ju Lee. What convinced you about them?

Part need, part gamble
I’m in a complete rebuild mode, and wanted to fill out some aspects of my system, really, and didn’t have any other guys that I felt I needed to get in those spots (with the exception of Brad Holt: I was fixated on getting Collier at 2.1, and when he went, I wanted to get the next closest thing, which I now feel was a mistake).
Hak-ju Lee is a big time wildcard, but I like the reports I’ve read — he should stay at short, has a body and approach that invites speculation on his upside, and I read that he would probably be the #2 high school shortstop after Beckham if he was from the States.
Dixon is a toolshed athlete, but the reports I’ve read on him are that he’s picking things up quickly, especially in his move from the infield to centerfield. I generally like the combination of raw athletes who show an aptitude for quickly picking up and developing aspects of their game.
We go 5 rounds in total. I have two more picks in the 3rd round, then a 5th round pick. I’m just trying to fill up with as many potential breakout guys as possible, because the upper parts of my system are pretty strong:
C Carlos Santana, Wilson Ramos
1B Yonder Alonso, Nick Evans
2B Ivan DeJesus
SS Wilmer Flores (tho he won’t stick, of course), Hak-Ju Lee
3B Pedro Alvarez, Allen Craig
OF Dexter Fowler, Nick Weglarz, Daryl Jones, Engel Beltre, Gorkys Hernandez, Brent Clevlen, Rashun Dixon, Kelvin De Leon, Angel Morales, Yorman Rodriguez, Rafael Rodriguez
P Justin Verlander, Andrew Miller, Kyle Davies, Ian Snell, Tim Melville, Juan Ramirez, Kelvin de la Cruz, Jairo Heredia, Randall Delgado, Jeff Locke, Jenrry Mejia, Jason Knapp, Kyle Lobstein, Tyler Sample, Maikel Cleto, Adam Reifer, Guillermo Moscoso, Simon Castro, Jeremy McBryde

I would kill
to be the Blue Jays. I love both picks…. alot
about Dixon. Dixon got drafted by Oakland (so he must be awesome =p) in the 10th round and plays the outfield (right and center). Turned down football to play baseball. 17 last year and in 190 AB he hit 8 HR and 10 tripples in rookie ball, but had a 68/18 K:BBrate. Boatloads of potential, and it looks like the power can be real, but no one can be sure about someone as raw as him.

Phillies here.
I was ecstatic with my draft. Picked up Carlos Quentin to go from the 4th pick to the 17th pick and still ended up with a guy like Skipworth.
My draft plus a few prospects netted me:
Carlos Quentin
Kyle Skipworth
Zach Collier
Russ Springer
Josh Roenicke

Yeah
That threw the rest of the draft into a whole new light. I furiously traded up (Ian Snell, picks 1.3 & 5.3 for Brandon McCarthy, Homer Bailey, Jeremy Hellickson & 2.7) after Tazawa and Hosmer were the first two picks in order to land Alvarez, who was #1 on my draft board. It also meant that either Hicks or Alonso would be at 11, a pick I traded Chris Valaika and Danny Duffy for soon after. I really wanted Hicks there, because I think he’ll be up in Heyward territory this time next year, but was still satisfied with Alonso, though I hope he doesn’t end up with a big time platoon split.
