Ethan Martin

He has no professional body of work at this point, but the Dodgers have definitely proven they know what they are doing when drafting HS pitchers. Even if he fails at SP, he could then just become their best 3B prospect!

The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. It reminds us of all that once was good, and that could be again.

+1

92-94 mph fastball that hits 96, a power curveball, and a good changeup. Excellent athlete. Excellent organization for guys like him.

I agree - Noonan is as valuable as a dead horse… and he too should be beaten by some dude in a top hat who looks like he’s holding his junk.

Question about testers

Do we really need to see guys who garnered 2% of less within the past 10 rounds? From the looks of it, Ceda and McCallister, West, and Brown may all come up next, but each failed pretty miserably back in polls 97-99.

I’d really like to see some complements to all these low-minors players or the injured guys with previously high ceilings. Can we get some unexciting AAA players who project to be major league regulars and are just not so impressive ARL? In reality, some of these guys will be good contributors and have no real blemish except that they don’t have HOFer ceilings.

Guys like Niemann or Kila qualify for this. So would Eric Hurley, David Freese, Allen Craig, etc. These are all guys that are not AAA retreads and certainly have some MLB upside.

I guess my request is to the voters as much as the poll managers. The fascination with guys like Lawrie, Teheran, or Melville seems a little much when guys with bona-fide MLB talent are still out there, and right on the cusp of the major leagues.

by siddfynch on Dec 18, 2008 11:12 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

I agree

but we still have a guy who WAS sucessfull at a high level, AND pitched a couple good games in the majors, AND just turned 22, AND has had no injuries… who cant get on

Jason Castro

He may have been a reach, but his winter league numbers, along with his already solid rep as a defensive receiver and game caller, lead me to believe he is being underrated around here. he needs to be on the list soon, and bud norris should be a tester by now.

the astros deserve their horrendous rep among prospect junkies, but system bias is an ugly thing.

by clark on Dec 18, 2008 11:49 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Houston's farm is not even that bad anymore...

The Astros had one of the better drafts this past year, and a added a number of guys who should garner consideration for this list: Castro, Brian Bogusevic, Jordan Lyles, and Chris Johnson. Next season Ross Seaton could also compete for a top 100 spot.

Coghlan

Plus Defense at 2B. Plus speed. Plus plate discipline. Nothing not to like.

Brandon Erbe!

He has tons of potential to become a great pitcher!

by Orioles77 on Dec 18, 2008 3:18 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

That a Baby!

Erbe is going to be a stud. Projectable frame, solid stuff, succeeded in the Carolina league as a 20 year old. He gets a bad rap for having poor control, and while needs to iron out his fastball command, his walk rate really wasn’t that bad this year- 3 BB/9. He struck out more than a batter an inning, and held opponents to a .216 average against. The only thing separating him from getting national media attention is his high ERA- 4.30, which was brought on because of a high HR rate, he gave up 21 in 150.2 IP. I look for him to move to AA next year, play the whole year there as a 21 year old, improve his FB command, therby dramatically decreasing his HR rate and ERA.

Part of the issue is that he was so horrible last year

If his 2007 hadn’t been rotten, he would be a shoo-in.

Matt Moore?

Not sure what the hold up is here. Love this guy. Stuff is excellent and while I’m a bit of a skeptic with short-season stats, they’re pretty solid as well. It all adds up into a nice package.

Castro or Noonan next for me out of the available candidates, I think. But we’ll see.

Noonan

ahead of Coghlan? I’m very curious why.

I said, "available candidates"

I meant out of the guys who I could put a vote in for at this point.

But if you wanted to make an argument for Noonan over Coghlan . . .Noonan’s tools are better. He’s faster and he’ll probably have better power. I’m not really concerned about plate discipline statistics out of teenagers in full season ball unless they’re just obscenely awful in some way, and Noonan’s aren’t. Obviously Coghlan has better skills but considered the age differential, you’d expect that.

It’s an interesting comparison and a pretty close one, I think.

by mrkupe on Dec 18, 2008 4:25 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry

didn’t realize Coghlan wasn’t still on the poll. I’m not sure why he’s not on the list already, let alone not being able to stay on the poll.

Naw

Certainly not good, as it’s his major weakness. But he wasn’t King anywhere close to once per game, and he produced just fine for his age/position/competition level regardless.

I should note, I’m not trying to say Noonan is an uber-prospect. But then again this isn’t prospect #6, it’s prospect #106. I think this guy has the stuff to be a major league regular second baseman, and a pretty good one at that. If he still can’t figure out how to work the strike zone when he’s 22, call me. Until then, I like the overall package.

You can find plenty of guys in the majors who strike out a bunch but do things with the ball when they connect. Guys who make plenty of contact but do nothing with it are Neifi Perez.

We will learn more from him after a full season in the minors.

another guy getting close to the majors, but suffering from prospect fatigue

Castro

He’s an above-average hitter, who is patient, and has a quick swing. His power potential is average, maybe a little above. Goldstein says he has a plus arm – I think it’s a tick above-average. He has some problems with his footwork, but is a good receiver, and is very athletic for a catcher. He also has the ability to steal a bag. Castro played in short season A, and the Hawaii winter league (really fall) combining for .296 BA .438 OBP .420 SLG% .858 OPS in 216 at-bats. Castro’s XBH% was only 30% but, that is not a bad number – just not great – and his on base numbers were great. He struck out 54 times compared to 38 walks. Those are just his pro numbers. He also played for Stanford during the College World Series, and came up in the clutch in a number of instances for them – that’s when I was sold on Castro.

I think those numbers, particularly the OBP are top 100 numbers, and I think he has clearly established himself as one of the best prospects from the 2008 draft, after being immediately looked at as an overdraft. I also do not think you can undervalue what a good catcher can add to his team, especially the Astros, who have lacked one who can hit for a long time.

For those of you asking about his ETA, "Watch," Acta said, "Castro could be ready for the majors by the end of the season." That is a quote from Nationals manager Manny Acta during the winter meetings.
