oh yeah youre right
I forgot he sucks at everything. My bad.

agreed
I would also say Bumgarner has a higher upside than either Cahill or Anderson. The A’s don’t have a position player of comparable value to Posey and Angel V’s offensive ceiling is as high as they come

The A's system >> the Giants system overall anyway, so..
Meh.
And I’d definitely take both Cahill and Anderson above Bumgarner.

Does it matter?
Does being ranked as a better system ensure your prospects turn out better? Actually, I would prefer to NOT have the higher ranked system. Then at least your prospects aren’t considered busts if they don’t make it. When putting such high expectations on players, they either meet them or they don’t. They can’t exceed them. And being ranked higher won’t improve their chances of making it one bit.

Somebody's favorite team doesnt have a good farm system.
That, or you dont like these teams.

Mariners and Cubs fan...
I had all four of the Giants prospects here on my list of players I wanted to draft this past season in my league. I also like 3 of the 4 A’s prospects that are listed (not sure on Inoa yet). It has nothing to do with that… I just don’t see the reason behind the dick-measuring contest that goes on between two clubs and arguing who has a better farm system. It has a miniscule if any effect on how they players turn out.

I don't get...
why people make prospect lists. It doesn’t have any kind of effect on how the players turn out.

But arent all sports fandoms
about pissing contests? “My team is better than yours because…” Pointless yes, but still fun none the less. You also have to understand that the A’s and Giants are not good teams so we as fans need something to brag about.

Not necessarily pissing contests
Sports fandom is often about giving us something to talk about, even though our discussion doesn’t amount to anything. Talking about movies doesn’t make them better or worse either, but everyone does it.

yes
but the higher your prospects are rated the higher value they have in evryone else’s eyes so it does matter to some extent

Loaded argument
The Giants system has made great strides but it’s not nearly as deep as the A’s system. So a Giants site took the two systems and reduced them to four guys to make it a close fight. Nice one.

actually most teams seem to have about 4 elite prospects
the Orioles, Giants, Braves, and Marlins have 4 elite prospects, but then after that, there’s a huge dropoff. It’s not like the Giants fans are arguing who has the better farm system; it’s the A’s by a mile. The point is just to compare who has the best elite talent, which is a much more debatable arguement.
by boonitez on Dec 17, 2008 2:08 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
But who cares
who has the best top 4? If you don’t have the depth, your top 4 has to hit or screwed. I can see some merit in ranking entire farm systems, because the deeper the system, the better chance a team has of staying/becoming successful with homegrown talent. But picking a very small number of prospects and trying to compare the systems really doesn’t do much good.

Let's keep in mind the importance of depth
Before this season, would FDLS have been in your A’s top four? Probably, right? The fact that the A’s could lose one of those guys and still be on par with just about anyone in top fours is why it’s kind of dopey to worry about just top fours.

The Braves have a huge dropoff after their top 4?
Though trading Flowers certainly took away some of the depth at the top, I don’t know if I buy the Braves as part of that list. Even after the trade for Vazquez, they still have 12 guys John ranks as a B- or better (the A’s have 15) and 23 that ranks as a C+ or better (compared to 26 for the A’s). Now I’m not trying to argue that the Braves are on the A’s level when it comes to depth, but I think they clearly surpass teams like the Giants, Orioles, and Marlins in that department.

Yep, this.
The Braves have a top 4 farm system. In which order you rank them and Tampa can be debated, but the level of talent cannot.

Hard to argue with the Braves top four
Not necessarily the best, but certainly inner circle. Also, they have a lot of high-upside guys to dream on like Teheran

Braves
Heyward
Hanson
Schafer
Freeman/Gorkys

also, if we could some how make a mutant hybrid of Freeman/Gorkys that could possibly be the greatest prospect ever. Though we’d have to feed it live chickens or something.

Rangers
Feliz
Holland
Smoak
Teagarden/Ramirez/Andrus
I just hate Villalona, Posey, and Inoa at this point, so I’d probably say rangers
by Navi's_Navy on Dec 17, 2008 9:33 AM EST reply actions 0 recs
You hate Inoa?
I don’t see how anyone could hate him or love him. There’s nothing to go on but second-hand word of mouth. So are you just overreacting to the premature Inoa fanboys?
by aap212 on Dec 17, 2008 12:15 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I voted for the A's
since their actual top four does NOT include Inoa, and the Giants top four actually does include Villalona, whom I hate…
