Furcal to the Braves

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8947764/Source:-Furcal-to-sign-with-Braves

Very interesting... does this open up Peavy to the Braves talk again? Clearly, both Furcal and Escobar are very capable SS defensively and moving one to 2B would probably be a waste of resources considering they have an excellent offensive 2B in Johnson already. I guess another option could be to move Johnson to LF and Escobar to 2B, but that's probably not leveraging Johnson's offense as well as they could.

What does everyone think?

Matt Holliday

Could the Braves use Matt Holliday? The A’s could definitely use Yunel Escobar.

Why?

I mean, this deal will probably not happen of course, but something based off of it isn’t totally out of line

A's

Why would they make a huge trade for Holliday so they could move him for Escobar +? Maybe if Beane thinks he’ll come out with better players but it seems like they are trying to compete not build. I don’t think thats feasible.

From the otherside

The Braves aren’t going to trade Escobar for a one year rental.

Well I would personally rather have a pitcher than play KJ in LF and Furcal at 2B. I love KJ so would prefer Escobar be dealt I believe. Escobar and Furcal are probably a push on the field with Escobar having the advantage in terms of age, health and lower salary but KJ’s trade value seems low and I don’t think we have seen what he can do yet.

As far as Peavy, we will see. Wren seems pretty upset with how the negotiations took place (perhaps rightly so) and has said publicly a few times they will not reopen the talks. There are plenty of other pitchers to pursue a trade for and time to do it before we really need to start to panic. I would also like to see the Braves sign either Smoltz, Lowe (still don’t understand why they remain on the sideline here?) or Kawakami before getting to deep into talks because I still feel we are much further than one P away from competing for the division again.

I imagine it's a precursor to a deal

Peavy is definitely a possibility, but Greinke could be a thought. I don’t think Moore would fork over Greinke unless it was an absolutely sweet deal, but say you put Escobar and a young arm or two in the mix. Maybe a Cf. Add a pen arm in the mix, perhaps allowing Moore and Hillman to shift Soria to the rotation. It might just be worth it. At the very least, if it’s a package of say, Escobar/Schafer/Rohrbough and one, Moore likely would listen, I think.

Or maybe they make a smaller deal for say, Paul Maholm as has been rumored. Maholm’s getting overhyped, but he’d be a decent addition (although to be honest, I think adding Kawakami makes more sense).

Or maybe they end up flipping Kelly Johnson for an OF bat.

Short of it is, I don’t buy the “Kelly’s in LF and that’s a wrap”. They sort of have to do that, otherwise they lose a little leverage in trade talks. I expect a move to happen.

I agree with this

The talk of moving guys around sounds like trade leverage to me. Either Escobar or KJ will be dealt for pitching.

the idea/thought running through my head is

Kelly Johnson for Delmon Young. Gets the Twins a 2nd baseman, as they can play Casilla at short, and an offensive upgrade.

Now, I think KJ or Yunel gets shopped for pitching first, but if they can’t land a Greinke or a Peavy, then I think they are better off fishing in FA and making a move for a bat. I also think they could perhaps make a Maholm trade without KJ or Yunel involved, although Huntington would likely ask for more arms than Maholm is really worth.

Sounds like

a real “sell low” on DYoung. Not saying it wouldn’t happen, but KJ’s 2B defense is very not good. I haven’t run the numbers, but it wouldn’t shock me if his UZR ratings were so low as to make him essentially replacement level.*

*WAG with chance of being horribly, horribly wrong. But I don’t think so.

Well

Not the lowest. Jeff Kent had -11.2 UZR, but he didn’t have the innings to qualify (!).

Thanks

As I figured. I bet that -8 UZR cancels out much of his offensive contributions.

Not that I think Johnson is some sort of defensive whiz, but I don’t have the greatest trust for UZR. According to it, Furcal has been a pretty bad defender over the course of his career, which strikes me as manifestly wrong.

Uh, you think?

Escobar/Schafer/Rohrbough and one, Moore likely would listen

I think Moore would accept that package before Wren could finish his sentence.

by aCone419 on Dec 16, 2008 2:12 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

you really think it's that slam dunk that he would say yes?

I mean, Moore isn’t in a rebuild mode. Losing Greinke would really hurt their pitching. For all the talk about Soria succeeding as a starter, that’s still

a) Speculation
b) they’ve got to make the move first

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I think Moore would likely take that deal, but I don’t know if it’s a slam dunk. I look at the recent trades of cost-controlled arms, the Haren and Bedard packages, and a Escobar/Schafer/Rohrbough/and one isn’t heads and toes above those two packages in value, and in those two cases, the recipient team didn’t really have any strong thoughts about contending the following season.

by toonsterwu on Dec 16, 2008 2:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree

Using John’s grades from then (for the Ms/Os) and now (for the Braves).

Escobar (excellent young SS) >> Jones (B+ at the time)
Schafer (B+) = Tillman (B+ at the time)
Rohrbough (B) > Butler (B-)
and someone (?) =<>? Sherrill (a good LOOGY at the time) + Mickolio ©

It definitely holds its own with the Bedard package; maybe you are underrating Escobar or valuing the underbill of the trade more heavily. And that trade was a terribly lopsided trade in most people’s view.

Add to it Moore’s raging hard on for anything resembling a former Braves’ farmhand, and he would be all over that.

by aCone419 on Dec 16, 2008 2:47 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I think you are misreading what I typed

I said this one isn’t heads and toes above the other two packages – I think it’s ahead, not sure it is significantly ahead, but they key difference is that Baltimore had no thoughts about competing in 2008. KC has some legit thoughts about competing in 2009. I’m just not that sure it’s a slam dunk, although as noted, I think Moore would take it so it’s a matter of degree that we are discussing.

by toonsterwu on Dec 16, 2008 3:18 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What I meant

I meant, this package is better than the Bedard trade which was universally acclaimed as a slam dunk trade for the Orioles, therefore it should also be a slam dunk. I should have made that more clear.

But true, we are just arguing over a matter of degree here. I also think Moore can’t help himself when it comes to guys he oversaw in the Braves’ organization: Pena, Jr., Horacio Ramirez, Kyle Davies, Jose Capellan, Brayan Pena, Jairo Cuevas, Matt Wright, Carlos Sencion, Cory Aldridge, Ovandy Suero, Roman Colon, Matt Wright, John Foster, Damon Hollins…

why would

the royals trade greinke for a SS… I Think Aviles put up some real nice numbers at SS last year.

Not so fast...

it’s being reported now that Furcal to the Braves is no sure thing. The Dodgers are apparently making a late push to sign him too.
