Coghlan

Plus defense. Plus speed. Plus strikezone judgement. And will actually play a premium defensive spot in the infield.

I picked DeJesus, but I fear their votes could be divided.

After looking at voting

I really do not get Rohrbough, Noonan, and Betances getting more votes than Coghlan, they are not at the same level as prospects right now. I can understand a good case be made for DeJesus or Marrero. It also seems like Noonan has been languishing on this list for a while now, maybe it is just me, but at one point he was in a run-off( back at #83 lol)

Betances is a train wreck

Big guy with herky jerky delivery and injury problems. He’s been shut down with both a sore shoulder and a “sore arm” in the last year. He has no clue where the strikezone is. He’ s big and projectable but he pitches like a drunken Daniel Cabrera. I cant imagine seeing him on a top 100 list

Now if he puts together a healthy 2009 where he walks less than 4 per 9 then I would put him in the top 50. Until then he’s a big guy who throws hard with no control at all who’s had 50 successful innings of pro ball.

As was

pointed out to me – he did make a notable (if not remarkable) improvement to his walk rate the last 2 months of the season. I still would like to see it carry through to hi-a for a few months, but I can see him getting on the list pretty soon.

Congrats

Glad we can make it to this point, with less stupid nonsense that had previously been plaguing this site. When all is said and done, while far from perfect, I think this list is better than a lot of the other lists that will be put out there before the season starts.

TESTERS

Please place testers under this post. Pinstripes and myself will look at it to select some names for some upcoming polls.

late?

are you going to try and keep a poll going, an unoffical top 150 or whatever?

Well, some testers from me, if Iona is on the list already, I think Duran and Yorman should get some looks as well. Also, Jhrmivy DeJesus, Chris Valaika, Kelvin De Leon, and Oscar Tejeda would be some names I would want to see on a top 150

We are going to 150 or 200

Great idea

It will be interesting to see how the list develops as it goes forward. Also, you and pinstripes have done a great job with the list this year despite disputes over some of the rankings and ballot stuffing. The discussion has been very interesting as it has progressed instead of diminishing like I feared earlier.

i'm thinking mariners right now

and i’m thinking pineda and ramirez probably deserve a tester soon.

by toonsterwu on Dec 13, 2008 6:21 AM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ramirez might fit in soon but not Pineda

From what I have read, Pineda does not have very good stuff, he just has good command of it. Ramirez has a good curve and at least a low 90s fastball.

Here's A Bunch

John Raynor, John Shelby, Blake Beavan, Adam Moore, Jess Todd, Kyle Drabek, Travis D’Arnaud, Lou Marson, Jon Lucroy, Taylor Green, Hank Conger, Ryan Kalish, Brandon Erbe

A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.

a noob could be simply a level 100 running round shouting ‘’WTF DO I GO!?’’ or someone calling someone else a noob and then getting hit with a brick, anyone can call anyone a noob, but normally they are noobs themselves

Jenrry Mejia

Age: 19
Position: RHP
Pitches:
Fastball: 93-95 MPH, good movement, touches 97
Changeup: 87-89 MPH, good tumbling motion, mixes well with fastball. Could be plus pitch
Curveball: 75-76 MPH, great bite, but still raw and not used often. Also has plus potential.
Stats in NYP: 11 GS, 56.2 IP, 52 K/23 BB (2.26 K/BB, 8.33 K/9, 3.68 BB/9), 42 H, 4 HR, 3.49 ERA
Goods: Young kid with very good fastball that he can locate, very good stuff overall, great mental makeup, good stats in NYP
Bads: Due to his efforted delivery, there are concerns of durability and command

Jason Castro

He’s an above-average hitter, who is patient, and has a quick swing. His power potential is average, maybe a little above. Goldstein says he has a plus arm – I think it’s a tick above-average. He has some problems with his footwork, but is a good receiver, and is very athletic for a catcher. He also has the ability to steal a bag. Castro played in short season A, and the Hawaii winter league (really fall) combining for .296 BA .438 OBP .420 SLG% .858 OPS in 216 at-bats. Castro’s XBH% was only 30% but, that is not a bad number – just not great – and his on base numbers were great. He struck out 54 times compared to 38 walks. Those are just his pro numbers. He also played for Stanford during the College World Series, and came up in the clutch in a number of instances for them – that’s when I was sold on Castro.

I think those numbers, particularly the OBP are top 100 numbers, and I think he has clearly established himself as one of the best prospects from the 2008 draft, after being immediately looked at as an overdraft. I also do not think you can undervalue what a good catcher can add to his team, especially the Astros, who have lacked one who can hit for a long time.

For those of you asking about his ETA, “Watch,” Acta said, “Castro could be ready for the majors by the end of the season.” That is a quote from Nationals manager Manny Acta during the winter meetings.

Noonan.

I, like Keith Law, like his avg. raw power and D. His plate discipline leaves a lot to be desired but he is only 19.

After further consideration

I went to Marrero. I still like Betances, and if I had more time to think, I might flip back to Betances. That said, what is there to really drop Marrero out of the top 100? In May and June, he still showed that the high end potential he had last year was still there.

To be honest, I think both Delin and Chris should be on the list already.

by toonsterwu on Dec 13, 2008 4:03 AM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

ah

I think it’s funny that I still remembering when people on this site were arguing that Marrero was a better prospect than Snider. Things change so quickly when it comes to prospects…

Ryan Tucker

He compares favorably to a Niese, though from the right side.

This list is painfully lacking in pitchers.

This is nonsense!!!

I think this vote should be deleted in favor of an all A’s v. Rangers-last-prospect-standing bloodbath.

In the meantime, Marerro is the obvious choice IMO.

Vote Marrero

In my opinion he is easily the best on the list.
