Other
Chris Coghlan.
Above average defense at 2B.
Walks more than he strikes out.
Already in the upper minors.
30+ steals per year potential.
Plenty of doubles power that may turn into HR power, but even if it doesn’t, 30-40 doubles a season is solid.

+1 on Coghlan
He is probably one of the more underrated prospects on this site.

Sure, but DeJesus can sort of play SS and he's a candidate.

Agreed...
I like DeJesus as well. I think he should also be on the list and I have voted for him a few times when Coghlan wasn’t on it. Both seem to profile as very similar players, but Coghlan seems to be a better base stealer based on their numbers in the minors so far. DeJesus is younger, but since Coghlan was a college kid, I don’t think you can hold that against him. I am hearing that Dejesus could be about an average (or adequate) defensive SS, so I don’t know if he could be an above average 2B like Coghlan is. I still like Coghlan better, but I think both should have been on this list by now.

I like both, just prefer Coghlan slightly more
But at least DeJesus gets some support, Coghlan only recieved 8 votes last time which is somewhat dissapointing at this point.

Jason Castro!
He’s an above-average hitter, who is patient, and has a quick swing. His power potential is average, maybe a little above. Goldstein says he has a plus arm – I think it’s a tick above-average. He has some problems with his footwork, but is a good receiver, and is very athletic for a catcher. He also has the ability to steal a bag. Castro played in short season A, and the Hawaii winter league (really fall) combining for .296 BA .438 OBP .420 SLG% .858 OPS in 216 at-bats. Castro’s XBH% was only 30% but, that is not a bad number – just not great – and his on base numbers were great. He struck out 54 times compared to 38 walks. Those are just his pro numbers. He also played for Stanford during the College World Series, and came up in the clutch in a number of instances for them – that’s when I was sold on Castro.
I think those numbers, particularly the OBP are top 100 numbers, and I think he has clearly established himself as one of the best prospects from the 2008 draft, after being immediately looked at as an overdraft. I also do not think you can undervalue what a good catcher can add to his team, especially the Astros, who have lacked one who can hit for a long time.
For those of you asking about his ETA, "Watch," Acta said, "Castro could be ready for the majors by the end of the season." That is a quote from Nationals manager Manny Acta during the winter meetings.

Jason Castro
I voted Castro.
I’m going with my gut on this one.
I liked him better than most did on draft day.
Haven’t see much to change my mind.
And the 5th best OPS in Hawaii only tends to reinforce my opinion.

CHRISTOPHER MARRERO
He was 27th(!) on BA’s top 100 coming into the year, one place ahead of Jason Heyward. His skills have not deterioated; he was just injured in the middle of the year.
It is his time.

i wouldn’t hold my breath. the way the angels promoted him even though he didn’t necessarily warrant it bodes pretty well for rushing him again.
after this season he needs to wear a flack jacket. again, i can’t remember a top pitching prospect shelled like that before. i mean, he got smoked.

I think
they’ll be more carefull with him from now on. They had reason… at least a defensible position for rushing him last year. He was completely awesome in spring training except for his last start if I remember correctly. Then he imploded. Hopefully they learned their lesson. I’m not saying he’s a “top” pitching prospect, but he definately belongs in the top 100.

Ivan DeJesus
I’m sorry, but it will be a crying shame (As in I may shed a tear, sad native american style) if DeJesus does not make the list. An average or better defensive shortstop who can hit for average with a little pop. May still be improving as a hitter as he progresses. Seems to be a perfect fit for the top 100.
by thudean on Dec 12, 2008 12:51 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Average defensive shortstop, above average defensive second basemen...
with the ability to hit for average, and a little pop.
Castro is an above average defensive catcher (with a plus arm – according to Goldstein). He has the ability to hit for average, and more pop than DeJesus. Sounds like Castro wins the heads up. VOTE CASTRO!

tough one
at first glance, i’m thinking betances, moore, or mills. i voted dellin, because i’ve liked him for awhile and i think the potential is too high, but it’s a very lukewarm nod. i almost think people are underselling david cooper a bit and was tempted to go here, but i couldn’t talk myself into putting cooper ahead of mills.

DELLIN BETANCES
This one isn’t hard…
by schmosterballs92 on Dec 12, 2008 1:18 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
What isn't hard
is leaving an A-ball pitcher with some suspect perifs off a top 100 list. Marerro is far more deserving.

true enough
but take a look at betances second half perifs. there’s nothing suspect about them.

Went Matt Moore,
who along with Chris Marrero and Chris Coghlan, is being underrated on this list. I think I’d take those three over any of Borbon, Martin Perez, Gorkys, Tabata, Beltre, or Mazzaro.

We need more pitchers
Pitchers are desperately underrepresented on this list, especially considering almost a third of them are from the A’s and Rangers, who have cough a few fans on here.

I'm amused that the A's and Rangers are resented for getting too much attention.
Not that I disagree, especially after Kyle Blanks was ranked below about five A’s prospects that I’d trade for him.

You might be misinterpreting me
While I think there have been some wonky rankings with guys from those teams (especially with the Rangers), I don’t resent the two best farm systems in baseball for having lots of guys on the list. My problem is that there are so few pitchers on the list. The fact that such a huge percentage of the pitchers on the list are from teams that are getting stuffed makes it all the more glaring. Perhaps we should have mimicked Sickels by doing a hitter list and pitcher list.
