I find it strange that a 21-year-old with a 23.8 K% in the Texas League hasn’t even merited discussion. Especially when Nick Noonan is still running around in here.

Scouting reports suck

They basically regard him as a trick pitcher rather than one who really has the stuff to succeed in MLB as more than middle relief.

Miller or Adenhart

Either way for me, really, though I went with Adenhart.

Chris Marrero

If not for injury, he would have been on here long ago. He went down just as he was heating up, thus freezing his line for the year in “meh” territory:

April: .200/.284/.353
May: .267/.356/.475
June: .294/.338/.559
INJURY

He was the same age as SNTS hero Andrew Lambo, a level up, and with huge power potential.

by aCone419 on Dec 10, 2008 10:36 AM EST reply actions

I voted Marrero

He and Lambo are pretty close IMO. Marrero has huge power potential, I totally agree with that statement. But his AA results have been less than stellar, and was a pretty big disappointment in 2008. I actually had him ranked higher than Snider going into the year. Their similar profiles/tools combined with Marrero flashing more power leaned me on the Marrero side. If he starts out hot in AA in 2009, he could skyrocket up prospect lists.

go start your own list

Have some manners. Maybe if betances didn’t walk nearly 5 guys per 9 he’d be on by now. I don’t know. You’ll have to ask the community, which evidently collectively doesn’t exactly match your list. Shocking.

by wobatus on Dec 10, 2008 11:18 AM EST up reply actions

+1 on the manners

However, the community voted Jeffress onto the list at 74, and he has averaged 5.09 BB/9, with 10.39 K/9 versus Dellin’s 4.55 BB/9 and 10.43 K/9. Just looking at the numbers, Dellin is ahead. Even if you think otherwise, there is no way Jeffress is 22 spots better.

by cookiedabookie on Dec 10, 2008 11:39 AM EST up reply actions

perhaps true

I didn’t vote for jeffress either, but the community in all its flaws has spoken. :) You make a good point, and perhaps betances does belong on the list by now, but there are lots of deserving players. I went Ivan Jr. and think he should have been on by now.

by wobatus on Dec 10, 2008 11:43 AM EST up reply actions

+1 on manners, but

I’m not a big supporter of Jeffress and do think Betances is a top 100 prospect. However, I do think there is a big difference between them. Betances did it at a lower level and with a lower GB rate. To me, he has to prove it every level and will always be a step or two behind Jeffress because of it, unless either of them gains control, at which point one will vault away from the other.

by thudean on Dec 10, 2008 11:55 AM EST up reply actions

Just looking at the numbers.....

Why would anyone “just look at the numbers” for a guy in the lower minors?

Betances was in low A ball this year, Jeffress was in A+/AA. Betances performance was somewhat similar to Jeffress a year ago at the same level (3.67 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 2.29 K/BB vs. 3.13 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 2.16 K/BB).

But I need more than numbers to go on for a guy in low A ball. Jeffress in A+ this year was selected as the fourth best prospect in the FSL by BA, based on input from coaches and managers. Betances, a level lower, didn’t make their top 20 for the SAL. In 2006, Jeffrress went in the 1st round, with the 16th pick of the draft, Betances went in the 8th round, with the 254th pick. Jeffries was recently ranked in the top 50 prospects in the game by the scouts surveyed by MLB for their list for the second year in a row.

I’m willing to be sold on Betances, but I have yet to see a reasonable case for him in the top 100. Show me the quotes, or scouting reports, from anyone who thinks he’s as good as Jeffress. Show me the rankings by actual scouts, coaches, or managers, or other experts who actually rank him that high.

by acerimusdux on Dec 10, 2008 12:36 PM EST up reply actions

Betances

I’ve read several pieces that state Betances stuff is exceptional. I don’t think that’s really in question. The knock on him is/was always the command issues which were pretty significant. The only difference between the two is that Jeffress is doing it at a higher level.

However, one could argue that Betances has turned the corner with his second half results supporting that premise. I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see Betances leap frog Jeffress next year.

Check out these numbers. His walks decreased dramatically while his hits per 9 and k rate stayed pretty much the same. If that’s not improvement I don’t know what is.

1st half: 60 / 40 / 41 / 70
2nd half: 55.1 / 47 / 18 / 65

I heard Tim Lincecum will win 1 Cy Young & 11 Tim Lincecums. Question is, how many Cole Hamels will he win?

Has had solid plate discipline for 2 years. I’ll admit his power may be fluky in AA, but considering he played in the CAL league previously, an inflated SLG may not be the case. His IsoP did marginally increase between A+ and AA. He is likely a solid to above-average glove at short, and if moved, an above-average to excellent glove at second. He looks like starting middle infielder and should be ranked accordingly.

Just take Adenhart off

if he goes any lower, we will look better by saying we forgot to include him

by wobatus on Dec 10, 2008 11:24 AM EST up reply actions

right

let’s not pay ANY attention to his numbers which, oh by the way, were probably among the 10 worst in all of minor league baseball.

More like

lets not pay ANY attention to what scouts are still obviously saying about him – obviously we’ve already paid attention to the numbers as he’s this far down.

Surprised...

that Coghlan, Mazzaro, and DeJesus are not on the list yet. Shouldn’t the A’s ballot stuffer(s) have him on the list about 15 spots ago? I also think Reddick should be in the Top 100.

I think whoever was stuffing for A's prospects gave it up a while ago, based on the vote patterns

There’s still the “large SBN fanbase/homer” vote but that’s not in the same range of swaying results.

18 different people posted each thread for like 20 polls asking you to try him as a tester.

People may have just realized he’s a really good prospect – who is going to be higher on BP’s and BA’s top 100 lists than we have him. Hell, he was higher last year IIRC

by alskor on Dec 10, 2008 5:24 PM EST up reply actions

LOL

18 different people posted in EACH THREAD for 20 POLLS asking for me to put him as a tester? That is not nearly true. I have put numerous A’s on the list so please drop the nonsense that I have been unfair to them. I highly doubt that he will be higher on BP and BA’s top 100 list then he is on our list. I was just poking some fun at PT, he dishes it out and he also can take it, regarding the A’s fans ballot stuffing. It isn’t his fault that certain teams (i.e. Rangers, A’s) fans tend to stuff the ballot box more then others.

exaggerating a bit, but Simmons did have support for quite awhile before hitting the list. He’s not the only case like that though. You’re doing a great job, and some guys are bound to fall thru the cracks now and then.

Voted Coghlan this time

I like his offensive upside a bit more than DeJesus right now. He has signs of growing power with 32 2B and Ks slightly less than DeJesus. They both have great K/BB ratios though with both being about even. Right now, I can see Coghlan being a 20/20 player with a very good OBP if all goes well.

DeJesus and Mills are next on my list.

Coghlin

Will likely be a better player than half of these other prospects already on this list. At least.

that’s why I started calling for him to be a tester back in the 40s. He profiles very similar to Dustin Pedroia… who just won an MVP award. He has more speed than Pedroia, but probably less power. What is the downside of a player like Coghlan?

You can not...

ever compare any player to Dustin Pedroia. Players like him are very rare and are only as good as they are because of how hard they work.

by joegonzo on Dec 10, 2008 2:29 PM EST up reply actions

You cannot...

not combine the words “can” and “not”. j/k

His tools seem very similar to Pedroia, so that’s where the comparison comes from. Plus, both were very underappreciated her on minorleagueball.com. I think Pedroia was only ranked in about the 60s two years ago. Both are plus defenders with great BB/K ratios. Both have some speed and some pop and hit over 300 on a yearly basis.

Plain and simple, he’s better than Mazzaro. Adenhart wouldn’t be bad here, either.
