Yes, I want C.C. Sabathia on my team. That would be awesome.

And I want CC for the next 3-4 years. After that, not so much.
But to see him eviscerate the Indians a few times a year… priceless.

Assuming that we had some magical way of fitting him in the budget, absolutely. We are in a win-now mode with about a 2-3 year window before some big changes will happen to the club. Adding Sabathia to go with Zambrano/Harden/Lilly/Dempster would give us a filthy rotation.

Yes, I’d like to pair C.C. Sabathia with Johan Santana. Who’d be the number 1 on that staff?

How do you figure?
How did you figure out that particular ranking of the Cy Young candidates? I agree that a case can be made for any of the three you mentioned, plus Brandon Webb. I’m just curious as to what your thinking is.

What? You want my secret formula?? No really any other year Santana would take it. Both pitchers came up clutch time and time again, Santana didnt lose in the 2nd half! But take a look at the last week, Sabathia pitching on 3 days rest how many times in a row?? I cannot take away from Lincecum’s great season but he pitched under less pressure than a baby’s fart in a diaper bag.

This year and last year I’d rather have CC. Before that Johan..

I would love me some C.C.
He’s an absolute stud and I would want him on my team, no matter what team that is.
Also, I’m confused about the bit in the posting about him not having the greatest attitude. I’ve spent some time around him and he’s as good as it gets. He’s actually really down to earth and a much better person than about 80-90% of MLB players.
He’d be a great addition in every respect to any ball club.
Sadly, there’s no way in hell he’s coming to my White Sox. Oh well.

CC would be about the 5th best hitter on the current Giants roster
OK, I kid, but seriously, who wouldn’t want the guy? He’s an absolute horse, has impeccable command, the best lefthanded fastball among MLB starters— what’s not to like here? Yeah, he’s big— but I’ll take big with a clean bill of health over your Ben Sheets types every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
As with every free agent, it comes down to the contract and the team’s ability to afford said contract. I’d show him 25 mill a year if I was the Yankees, easily…

I cannot think of a single pitcher larger than Sabathia off the top of my head. His weight scares me and the way MIL (ab)used him towards the end of the season scares me even more.
I know Zito is like the girlfriend that broke your heart but if that really is CC’s preferred destination (he can show this by taking a 120 million offer), I think SF should welcome him with open arms.

Check it out carefully
I would check out CC very carefully, both as to weight/conditioning and as to the effect of his high number of pitches on his arm. If I were satisfied with all the answers, I would LOVE to have him. Then the only question would be the annual salary and how many years I would be willing to extend it.
As for CC and the Giants, BLieve is absolutely correct that CC is a different animal than Barry Zito. When the Giants signed Barry, it was rather obvious to anyone who follows sabermetrics that while Barry COULD have worked out, the odds were against it.
All Barry’s charts over at www.fangraphs.com were heading the wrong way. And over the past six seasons, he had thrown more pitches than anyone outside of Livan Hernandez.
CC threw a lot of pitches last season, as well. But there is nothing wrong with the direction of his charts.
CC grew up in the Bay Area, so if he were willing to give some sort of significant hometown discount, I could see a deal working out for the Giants. I would be surprised if that happened, though. Certainly Zito didn’t take a hometown discount and in fact got a hometown premium.
Not the Giants’ finest moment. And I kind of feel sorry for Barry, who isn’t just a take-the-money-and-run kind of guy. (Not that I’ve seen him giving any of it back. :)

Yes
Yes, the Giants need not one really good hitter, but two or three. Still, isn’t the point of the game to outscore the other team? Does it matter if you do that by a 5-4 score with more hitting or by 4-3 with more pitching?
Plus, CC might be the Giants’ best hitter off the bench! :)

No
500 IP the last 2 years including being rode extremely hard at the end of this season – I’ll pass. Spare me the “he’s a horse” cliches. For the money and length of commitment it would take to sign him, I wouldn’t do it.

Wait a minute
Of course every team wants CC…..
NO team would not be better off with him…. IF IF IF money was no issues. the real question is how much money and how many years it will take to get a deal done?
If we are talking about paying Yankee money of 140 Million then the reality is NO team should want him except the Yankees, Boston or mets as to anyone else that is too much money and risk.

I'd rather have Sabathia and give up a 2nd round draft pick
Than have Peavy and give up Yunel Escobar + and have an extra $5million per anum floating around.
Would I rather have Sabathia than Burnett? Tough call there.

see
i don’t agree with the last statement….i don’t think burnett vs. sabathia is very close at all…but mainly because i don’t see any difference in burnett’s mechanics or approach despite his past injuries, and i would not be one bit surprised if he had more coming….sabathia’s motion is very natural and something that extended use should not endanger….granted, 250 innings on a perfect motion is still 250 innings, but i just watch burnett and cringe….
i will agree with your initial comment, though i think if he were a brave, i’d rather see him signed for 3-4 years….hampton issues still worry me about a high-paid pitcher with years on his deal that he can’t perform up to or even pitch at all….
Insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results.

Burnett comes a year shorter and $2-4 million per cheaper
That’s what makes it close; Sabathia is a superior pitcher.
FWIW, Burnett has been healthy since his TJ with the exception of some scar tissue breakup, which is common with TJ patients.

the marlins would take cc as well
of course his contract would be more than what they are paying their entire team. but did you see any of his starts last year? once the brewers acquired him, it seemed like he threw a complete game every time out, with 10 Ks and a walk or two. who wouldn’t want that? plus he has a HUGE heart and wants to win like nobody’s business. what’s not to like?

Hmm
What about the horrible stretch the guy had with the Indians last year? I love how that gets ignored…
I know, I know, his BABIP was off the wall and he was getting unlucky, but why don’t people include that stretch when considering his “heart”?

I think he just doesn't like pitching against the A's
seeing as how they were his childhood team… (2 of those horrible starts were against Oakland.)

What's not to like?
Even a Ferrari depreciates with high mileage. His size and his workload will catch up at some point. Just because it hasn’t yet, doesn’t mean he’s bullet proof.

so i'm not supposed to like him because...
he’ll age and throw more innings? doesn’t that happen to every pitcher in baseball? and for your information, i never said he was bullet-proof. but if you are able to predict which pitchers will get hurt, then please let me know….. that might help me in my fantasy baseball league.

Whoosh...
that was my post flyin’ right over your head….
My point wasn’t that he will throw more innings – my point was that he already has thrown a ton of innings in the last 2 years – including an epic case of overuse by the Brewers to finish 2008.
And for your information – while you never actually used the term bulletproof, you undeniably implied it.
Can I predict which pitchers will get hurt? No – that’s just stupid to even throw out there. I can, however, use wonderful things such as common sense and historical knowledge to deduce which pitchers are more likely to be injured than others. Big, fat, overworked pitchers definately fall in that category IMO.

The best predictor of pitching injuries is previous pitching injuries
Sabathia has none. Zip. Zero. He’s been completely healthy his entire career. He’s a better health risk than at least 80% of MLB starters.

Past injuries
certainly are the best predictor – that’s a given, it doesn’t let Sabathia off the hook for injury risk as I based it on overuse.

CC fits the idea of exactly what the Astros need . . . a co-#1 with Oswalt . . . when the reality of money sets in, I know there is no way it will ever happen. But yes, I would want him to play for the Astros.

And no. Just not worth the money for the marginal improvement over the guy he would kick out of the rotation (Sonnanstine). Hard for a Rays fan to justify wanting anyone with over a $12M/year price tag, especially one at a position that already seems set.

re
who wouldn’t want sabathia? he is easily one of the top 3 starters in the game and by all accounts, is a great club house guy.
As a Dbacks fan having him pair with Webb (and Haren behind) would be awesome. Also, We’d boast the two best hitting pitchers in them game when we team him with Owings.
For $140+ it will never happen. We can’t even resign Randy Johnson at $5mil or even give Odawg an offer. Schilling also wants to return to AZ but he’d basically have to play for free.
